二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、You’ll probably never go to Mars or sing on the stage with the Rolling Stones. But if virtual reality (VR) ever lives up to its promise, you might be able to do all these things — and many more — without even leaving your home. Unlike real reality, virtual reality means simulating (模仿) bits of our world. Apart from games and entertainment, it’s long been used for training airline pilots and surgeons and for helping scientists to figure out complex problems such as the structure of protein molecules (分子). Then how does it work?

Close your eyes and think of virtual reality and you probably picture something like this: a man wearing a wrap-around headset and data gloves wired into a powerful workstation or supercomputer. What distinguishes VR from an ordinary computer experience is the nature of the input and output. Where an ordinary computer uses things like a keyboard, mouse, or speech recognition for input, VR uses sensors that detect how your body is moving. And where a PC displays output on a screen, VR uses two screens (one for each eye), surround-sound speakers, and maybe some forms of touch and body feedback as well.

VR has been routinely used by scientists, doctors, dentists, engineers, architects, archaeologists, and the military for about the last 30 years. Difficult and dangerous jobs are hard to train for. How can you safely practice taking a trip to space, making a parachute jump, or carrying out brain surgery? All these things are obvious candidates for virtual reality applications.

Like any technology, virtual reality has both good and bad points. Critics always raise the risk that people may be addicted to alternative realities to the point of ignoring their real-world lives — but that criticism has been leveled at everything from radio and TV to computer games and the Internet. Like many technologies, VR takes little or nothing away from the real world: you don’t have to use it if you don’t want to.

1What equipment do we probably need for virtual reality?

    A. A keyboard, a headset and a supercomputer.

    B. A headset, data gloves and a speech recognition.

    C. A headset, data gloves and a supercomputer.

    D. A keyboard, a mouse and a speech recognition.

    2Paragraph 3 is mainly about   .

    A. the principles of virtual reality

    B. the applications of virtual reality

    C. the history of virtual reality

    D. the influences of virtual reality

3According to the passage, virtual reality means   .

    A. imagining beautiful things in our mind

    B. creating something that doesn’t exist

    C. experiencing things that don’t really exist

    D. cloning something that has died out

4What is the writer’s attitude towards VR?

    A. Appreciative.   B. Cautious.

    C. Skeptical.   D. Indifferent.

  • 22、When it comes to being fit and healthy, we're often reminded to aim to walk 10,000 steps per day. This can annoy many, especially when we're busy with work and other commitments---and yet where did this number actually come from?

The 10,000 steps a day target seems to have come about from a trade name pedometer sold in1965 by Yamasa Clock in Japan. The device was called "Manpo-kei", which translates to "10,000 steps meter". This was a marketing tool for the device and has seemed to have stuck across the world as the daily step target. It's even included in daily activity targets by popular smartwatches, such as Fitbit.

Research has since investigated the 10,000 steps a day target. But while some research has shown health benefits at 10,000 steps, recent research from Harvard Medical School has shown that, on average, around 4.400 steps a day is enough to significantly lower the risk of death in women. This was when compared to only walking around 2,700 steps daily. The more steps people walked, the lower their risk of dying was, before leveling off at around 7,500 steps a day. No additional benefits were seen with more steps. Although it's uncertain whether similar results would be seen in men, it's one example of how moving a little bit more daily can improve health and lower risk of death.

Recent research at the University of Texas has also demonstrated that if you're walking fewer than 5,000 steps a day, your body is less able to metabolize(新陈代谢) fat the following day. A buildup of fat in the body can also increase a person's likelihood of developing cardiovascular disease and diabetes. This is further supported by previous research which shows people who walked less than 4,000 steps a day could not change this decreased fat metabolism.

If you want to increase how many steps you get daily, or simply want to move more, one easy way includes walking to work if possible, or taking part of an online exercise program if you're working from home. Meeting with friends for a walk --- rather than in a cafe or pub --- can also be useful.

【1】What does the author think of the 10,000 steps per day?

A.It is an upsetting target to achieve.

B.It is likely to go out of style quickly.

C.It is a rising tendency of mental health

D.It is effective in reducing pressure on work.

【2】What does research from the Harvard Medical School suggest about the target?

A.It matters as much as 7500 steps a day.

B.The more steps, the lower risk of death.

C.A bit more than the target can improve health.

D.About half that target appears to be beneficial.

【3】What does the fourth paragraph mainly tell us?

    A.Absence of previous research.

    B.Recent findings of fat buildup.

    C.Problems of less daily walking.

    D.Possible causes of physical challenges.

【4】Which of the following is one of the suggested ways according to the passage?

    A.Working at home.

B.Treating friends in a cafe or pub.

    C.Driving lo work.

D.Signing up for online exercise programs.

  • 24、This month millions of American kids can forget about classroom bells and set off for grandparents’ homes, sleep-away camps and life guard stands. But summer vacation hasn’t always been a birth right of U.S. school children. Before the Civil War, schools operated on one of two calendars(日历), neither of which included a summer vacation. Rural(农村的) schooling was divided into summer and winter terms, leaving kids free to help with the farm work in the spring planting and fall harvest seasons. Urban students, meanwhile, regularly had as many as 48 weeks of study a year, with one break per quarter.

In the 1840s, however, educational reformers like Horace Mann moved to combine the two calendars out of concern that rural schooling was not enough and that overusing of young minds could lead to nervous disorders. Summer appeared as the obvious time for a break:it offered a rest for teachers, fit in the farming calendar and reduced doctors’ concern that packing students into hot classrooms would promote the spread of disease.

But people’s opinion about the modern U.S. school year, which averages 180 days, is still divided. Some experts say its pleasant but lazy summer break, which took hold in the early 20th century, is one of the reasons math skills and graduation rates of U.S. high schoolers ranked well below average in two international education reports published in 2007. Others insist that with children under increasing pressure to devote their downtime to internships(实习) or study, there’s still room for an institution that protects the lazy days of childhood.

1What did the rural school calendar before the Civil War allow children to do?

    A. Enjoy a summer vacation.

    B. Take a break each quarter.

    C. Have 48 weeks of study a year.

    D. Assist their parents with farm work.

2What did the educational reformers do in the 1840s?

    A. They introduced summer vacation.

    B. They shortened rural school terms.

    C. They promoted the study of farming.

    D. They advocated higher pay for teachers.

3Why are some people unhappy about the modern U.S. school year?

    A. It pushes the teachers too hard.   B. It reduces the quality of education.

    C. It ignores science instruction.   D. It includes no time for internships.
