  • 21、WHY A DOSE OF FEAR IS GOOD FOR YOU

Eleanor Roosevelt once said: “Do one thing every day that scares you.” She was onto something. Science has shown that feeling fear — in the right doses (量) — has several benefits.

·Feeling fear is fun and exciting. Many people scare themselves on purpose. 【1】

When you step outside your comfort zone, it is fear that makes you feel alive, which is fun and exciting. The excitement generated can also help reduce depression by increasing adrenaline (肾上腺素), which in turn increases excitement and glucose (changed into energy). 【2】 A dose of fear is an “eraser” for the mind.

·【3】 Being afraid of something can remind you of an area of your life that is limiting you. For instance, if you’re afraid of flying but face the fear and gather up the courage to step on an airplane, you can travel the world. Adding to your experiences means that you’ll create a varied life. You’ll also have fewer regrets.

·Fear makes you aware of what’s really important in life. How often have you said to yourself: “When I have more time, I’ll spend it with my family, pursue my passion, eat healthier or exercise more”? Fear makes you realize that “now” is the only time you have to achieve and follow through what is most important.【4】

Some say where fear meets courage is the sweet spot in which mountains get scaled and rivers are run.   【5】 We should all embrace our fear. Not the big fears that are life-threatening but the helpful fears that come in small doses.

    A.Fear helps you succeed.

    B.“Later” is never ensured.

C.Fear allows you to live life to the fullest.

D.They watch scary movies, ride roller coasters or go skydiving.

E.And every time you come through a challenge, you feel empowered.

F.Most of all, fear can be the birth place of change, creativity and innovation.

G.Actually, it’s nearly impossible to be thinking of your worries when you are experiencing fear.

  • 22、Cities are likely to be affected by overheating, thanks to something called the urban heat island effect. Cities tend to be short of trees, which provide shade, and they are covered with black pavement, which absorbs heat from the sun. Think of how it feels to wear a dark shirt versus a white shirt on a sunny day. A black shirt absorbs light, heating you up. But a white shirt reflects light, keeping you cool.

The average temperature in a city of a million or more people can be more than 5 degrees F hotter than surrounding areas. That extra 5 degrees can turn a hot day from uncomfortable to deadly. As temperatures rise, cities will be an especially dangerous place to be during a heat wave. To protect public health, city officials are going to make the city cooler.

As part of that effort, Los Angeles is coating its roads in CoolSeal, a gray paint that keeps streets and parking lots 10 degrees cooler than black asphalt(沥青). It will help Angelinos save money during the summer, when air conditioning sends power bills soaring. And it will save lives by lowering temperatures and improving air quality. Hot weather worsens air pollution by turning car exhaust into smog, which can make life miserable for people with asthma(哮喘)and other breathing problems.

Of course, LA will have to do more than paint over a few streets to cool off the city. Angelinos will also need to plant more trees and apply white paint to rooftops — at least those not already covered in solar panels. While LA is a pioneer of reflective streets, other cities, like New York, are already experimenting with reflective roofs or, like Melbourne, lowering the temperature by planting trees. LA is hardly alone in its effort to stay cool.

“This is an urgent challenge, and it’s much bigger than one person,” said Mayor Garcetti in a recent statement. “Climate change is a fact of life that people in Los Angeles and cities around the world live with every day.”

1Which of the following contributes to the urban heat island effect?

    A. Planting more trees in the streets.

    B. Covering the streets with white paint.

    C. Applying reflective paint to rooftops.

    D. Furnishing every house with air conditioners.

2What should the city officials emphasize during hot summer?

    A. How to make the city cooler.

    B. Where to wear a white shirt.

    C. Why to coat the roads with black paint.

    D. When to cut off the electricity supply.

3What benefit can people gain from the use of CoolSeal?

    A. Increasing the indoor activities.

    B. Promoting the sale of air conditioners.

    C. Making life easier and more comfortable.

    D. Reducing the number of cold days.

4What’s the main idea of the passage?

    A. L.A. adopted many approaches to fight against the heat.

    B. L.A. calls on people to fight against global warming.

    C. More and more countries begin to plant trees in the streets.

    D. L.A. is painting its streets white to keep the city cool.

  • 23、The stomach is an extremely strong organ, full of acid to break down each meal. In order to prevent this acid from burning a hole in our stomachs and damaging other organs, our stomach lining is specially adapted to contain the acid safely.

    H. pylori are able to live in the stomach by living in the lining, safe from harsh stomach acid. These bacteria are actually pretty common in people, approximately a third of Australians have H. pylori in their bodies, but not all have symptoms.

The bacteria can eventually create infection in stomach lining, a condition known as gastritis, by wearing away the lining and allowing stomach acid to burn away stomach tissue, causing painful ulcers.

Up until the 1980s, it was thought that bacteria could not survive in stomach acid. The cause of stomach ulcers was due to lifestyle choices: stress, smoking, spicy foods; the stomach acid was breaking through the lining on its own.

This belief was first questioned in 1979 by Robin Warren, an Australian pathologist, who found bacteria on a microscope slide containing the stomach lining of a patient with gastritis. In the years that followed Warren continued his research.

Warren then teamed up with Barry Marshall in 1981 and the two continued with the research, trying to separate the mystery bacteria and find a cure. Over the next three years, they tested their theories with some positive results; however, the idea that bacteria could be the cause of gastritis was not widely accepted or even acknowledged.

Finally, fed up with being ignored and confident in his findings, Bary Marshall decided to test on himself. He infected himself with H. pylori and soon developed gastritis and terrible stomach ulcers. Marshall then began to cure himself by taking a dose of antibiotics. This once and for all proved not only that bacteria could grow in stomach acid, but it could also cause gastritis and stomach ulcers.

Eventually, the world fully acknowledged Warren and Marshall’s huge contribution to science and medicine and the two were awarded the Nobel prize in Medicine in 2005, twenty-six years after Robin Warren first began his research.

  • 24、Harvey Sutton spent nearly seven months hiking with his parents, walking the thousands of miles that make up the complete Appalachian Trail(AT). Harvey, or “Little Man”, was just 4 years old when he started, and celebrated his 5th birthday on the trail.

Harvey’s parents, Josh and Cassic Sution, have been hiking with Harvey since he was two. They prepared him for hiking the AT by starting out with lots of shorter walks and hikes.

It took Harvey and his family 209 days to complete the entire AT. Every day the family would wake up around 5:30 in the morning. They would have breakfast and pack up their tent and sleeping bags before setting off through the woods. In general, the family hiked about 16 kilometers a day before stopping to camp again.

During his days on the AT, Harvey liked to use his imagination. This helped him walk more quickly and have fun while he hiked. He played games with his mom and dad and other hikers. Harvey says he enjoyed playing the “cell phone game” where you pretend you are different people.

Harvey and his family made friends with other hikers on the trail. Along the way, Harvey earned the nickname of “Little Man”.

Karl Donus Sakas hiked with the Suttons through seven states. He helped make the hike fun for Harvey by creating a treasure hunt for him to complete.

But Harvey also enjoyed the sometimes hard work of hiking. “My favorite part was the rock scrambles,” he says, “because they were so fun and hard.”

Mr. Sakas says Harvey didn’t seem to get tired. When other hikers were worn out at the end of the day, Harvey was still eager for a game of freeze tag.

Completing the AT taught Harvey and his parents how to work as a team and how to take on challenges together. Harvey’s mom says that because of the experience, “We’re closer than ever before.”

【1】According to the story, we know that .

A.Harvey Sutton started hiking at the age of 4.

B.Harvey is physically stronger than other hikers.

C.Harvey Sutton managed the trip through fun activities.

    D.Novel

【3】What can we learn from the story?

    A.Success lies in perseverance.

    B.Many hands make light work.

    C.Like father, like son.

    D.No pains, no gains.

  • 25、The days of the camera-carrying tourist may be numbered. Insensitive travellers are being ordered to _______ pointing their cameras at local residents. Tour companies selling expensive trips to remote corners of the world have become increasingly annoyed at the _______ of visitors upsetting locals. Now one such operator plans to ban clients from taking any photographic equipment on holidays. Julian Matthews is the director of Discovery Initiatives, a company that is working hand-in-hand with other organisations to offer holidays combining high adventure with working on environmental projects.

Matthews says he is providing 'holiday without _______, insisting that Discovery Initiatives is not a tour operator but an environmental support company. Clients are referred to as 'participants'. 'We see ourselves as the next step on from eco-tourism, which is merely a(n) _______ form of sensitive travel-ours is a more active approach.'

However, says Matthews, there is a price to pay. ' I am planning to introduce tours with a total ban on cameras because of the damage they do to our relationships with _______. I have seen some _______ things, such as a group of six tourists arriving at a remote village in the South American jungle, each with a video camera attached to their face. That sort of thing tears me up inside. Would you like somebody to come into your home and take a photo of you cooking? A camera is like weapon; it puts up a barrier and you lose all the _______ that comes through body language, which _______ means that the host communities are denied access to the so-called cross-cultural exchange.'

Matthews' views reflect a growing _______ among some tour companies at the increasingly rude behaviour of wealthy tourists. Chris Parrott, of Journey Latin America, says: 'We tell our clients that indigenous(土著的)people are often shy about being __________ but we certainly don't tell them not to take a camera. If they take pictures without asking, they may find themselves having tomatoes thrown at them.'

Crispin Jones, of Exodus, the overland truck specialist, says: 'We don't have a(n) __________; but, should cameras cause offence, our tour leaders will make it quite clear that they cannot be __________. Clients tend to do what they are told.'

Earth-watch, which pioneered the __________ of active eco-tourism by sending paying volunteers to work on scientific projects around the world, does not ban cameras, but operates strict rules on their use. Ed Wilson, the marketing director of the company, say: ' Some people use the camera as a barrier; it allows them to distance themselves from the reality of what they __________. I would like to see tourists __________ their cameras for once, rather than trying to record everything they see.'
