二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Can you imagine an ancient and quiet place? Well, this is Vicenza, my hometown. Every time I have the opportunity to speak about Vicenza with foreign people who do some sightseeing in Europe, I realize that it gets less credit than it deserves. Everybody knows Venice, Rome, and Florence very well, but only a few know the attraction of Vicenza.

Vicenza has to be taken into special consideration for the important historical buildings by Andrea Palladio, who was born in Padua (1508-1580), one of the most famous architects in the world. It was during the Renaissance and the next four hundred years in which Vicenza was under the protection of the Republic of Venice that the great structures were constructed, making Vicenza well-known throughout Europe and giving it the remarkable and distinctive appearance which it keeps today.

Apart from its historical district, Vicenza is surrounded by beautiful hills and countryside where you can spend time walking, sightseeing, and having delicious meals in the numerous restaurants which serve typical foods and good drinks. Moreover, in Vicenza’s countryside there are splendid villas. This is where many Venetians used to spend their summers, farming their land during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

Vicenza is a must-see for people fond of historical works. In addition, there are jazz and classical music concerts, ballets, and theatre performances, mostly during the autumn. It may be that young people feel Vicenza is not a place where they can have fun, but there are also pizzerias and pubs where contemporary music is performed, so they can have a good time there, too. Everyone needs to come to Vicenza to get to know it. They will see and touch the contributions to beauty that it made to the world.

  • 22、What would you say to a younger, less world-weary version of you? When the question was posed to 36-year-old refugee Kholoud, she answered without thinking.

In 2011, Kholoud started a Syrian newspaper, reporting news in her hometown. State-owned media meant citizens had little idea of what was happening, making her work valuable.

"I was a member of a peaceful activist group," she says. "But the soldiers responded with force. It only took two weeks for the real bullets to come."

Soon the arrests began, Kholoud's brother was taken at 12. 30 pm one evening when the family were all home. "The soldiers threatened to kill us all, threatened my mum they would chop her son into pieces." It wasn't until a year later that Kholoud would be forced to leave herself, "We were supposed to meet friends that evening, but two of them arrived early. We phoned to say we were coming, but they told us they had been arrested, because the meeting was a hook. We had to flee the country in less than two weeks."

First moving to Turkey, Kholoud gained a scholarship at a university in 2017. But when her Syrian passport expired while studying, she was forced to claim asylum(政治庇护). "While I was waiting for my asylum proposal to be accepted, I could not work or even live, feeling deprived of my humanity, and at that moment realised there's no hope for going back to Syria. I became a refugee."

Despite the hardships, I have no regrets. I would tell my younger self to keep fighting. I keep a motto close to me, written in the Kite Runner, which says' For you, a thousand times over.' For this cause and the freedoms of millions of other Syrians? Yeah, a thousand times over."

【1】What do we know about situations in Syria?

    A.Soldiers protected the citizens.

    B.State-owned newspapers were valuable.

    C.she couldn't return to Syria

    "New labels to show calories

The US government ruled that all food establishments(场所) should put the calorie information of their foods on their menus. Within a year chain restaurants, like fast food KFC, will have to say clearly on their menus how many calories their fried chicken wings, fries, and other items contain. Amusement parks, movie theaters and supermarkets will also have to follow the rules. The move is designed to fight against the problem of obesity(肥胖) in the US.

    Antibiotics leading to world problem

The entire world is facing this problem; antibiotic resistance. And the resistance will lead to the deaths of 10 million people across the world by 2025, predicted a new report released by the UK government. Antibiotics are used to destroy or slow the growth of harmful bacteria in our bodies. But overuse and misuse of them can encourage bacteria to develop new ways of overcoming antibiotics, which makes it increasingly difficult for humans to fight diseases.

  • 24、In China, over 162 million children in rural areas lack sufficient educational opportunities. Founded in 2008, Teach For China (TFC) attempts to close the gap in educational quality and achievement between cities and rural areas in China. To reduce the shortage of teachers in rural China, TFC enlists the most promising young graduates from top universities in China to ensure that one day, all children in China will enjoy access to quality education.

In partnership with local governments, TFC first identifies high-need schools and then introduces the concept to school officers to ensure local buy-in. Participating teachers, who are titled as "fellows", are trained to serve as full-time teachers in rural areas where they work for two years to equip students with academic and life skills they need to succeed in life.

Before placement, TFC's intensive Summer Institute prepares fellows to be effective teachers, strong cross-cultural communicators, and meaningful, long-term contributors to their placement communities. Fellows are placed in under-resourced schools selected for demonstrated student need. Fellows share their knowledge and brainstorm solutions to local challenges. Additionally, fellows receive the support of full-time instructional coaches who engage in joint problem solving to boost student achievement. TFC also provides online teaching resources to help fellows improve their teaching level.

Since its founding, TFC has trained and placed a total of more than 2,200 fellows. After the programme, they work in the field of education, business, public welfare, and government non-profit organisations, etc. In the long term, TFC seeks to develop a network of leaders working across a variety of sectors to end educational inequality in China. More than 540,000 students from Yunnan, Guangdong, Gansu, Guangxi, and Fujian provinces have benefited from the programme, and the number is still growing. For example, during the 2018–2019 school year, fellows helped students make significant progress in academic performance. About 52% of the classes got a higher average score on major tests. About 55% of the classes have improved the pass rate on major tests. And about 61% of the classes achieved a higher excellent rate.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

Reading the world in 195 boobs

In 2012, I set myself the challenge of trying to read a book from every country of all 195 UN- recognized states in a year. With no idea how to find publications, I decided to ask the planet’s readers for help. I created a blog called A Year of Reading the World and put out an appeal for suggestions of titles that I could read in English.

The response was amazing. Before I knew it, people all over the planet were getting in touch with ideas and offers of help. Some posted me books. Others did hours of research on my behalf. In addition, several writers, like Turkmenistan’s Ak Welsapar and Panama’s Juan David Morgan, sent me unpublished translations of their novels. Even with such an extraordinary team behind me, however, sourcing books was no easy task.

But the effort was worth it. As I made my way through the planet’s literary landscapes, extraordinary things started to happen. Far from simply armchair travelling, I found I was inhabiting the mental space of the storytellers. I discovered, book packing offered something that a physical traveller could hope to experience only rarely: it took me inside the thoughts of individuals living far away and showed me the world through their eyes. More powerful than a thousand news reports, these stories not only opened my mind to basic information of life in other places, but opened my heart to the way people there might feel. And that in turn changed my thinking. Through reading the stories shared with me by bookish strangers around the globe, I realized I was not an isolated person, but part of a network that stretched all over the planet.

One by one, the country names on the list that had begun as an intellectual exercise transformed into places filled with laughter, love, anger, hope and fear. Lands that had once seemed foreign and remote became close and familiar to me — places I could identify with. At its best, I learned, fiction makes the world real.
