二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、A study published has modeled the wide-ranging impacts of climate change and extreme weather events on Australia’s food systems and supply chains, identifying potential chain re-actions including job and income loss as well as a loss in nutrient availability and diet quality. Led by Dr Arunima Malik from the Integrated Sustainability Analysis(ISA)group, the paper analyzed the climate change impacts across different sectors and regions in Australia. The researchers found that climate change and extreme weather events have impacts across communities, with rural regions the most negatively impacted.

The study also found that climatic events, such as floods, bush fires and heatwaves could affect surrounding areas by way of limiting food availability and employment. The effects of these events could be felt in distant regions due to the complex inter-connectivity of modern supply chains.

Previous research undertaken by the ISA has shown that a local disaster can impact every other Australian state, resulting in losses across primary, secondary and tertiary industries. What plays out globally seems to play out locally as well. Everyone is affected by climate change, even if they’re not in areas directly hit by extreme weather, and the vulnerable (脆弱的) are affected most.

Damages to food supply can negatively impact diet quality, through reducing the diversity that contributes to a balanced diet to unhealthy processed foods that have a longer shelf life. This disproportionately impacts vulnerable groups, who do not have the means to pay increasing prices for scarce fresh foods.

Co-author Dr Sinead Boylan, a public health nutrition researcher in the Sydney Environment Institute, said, “The research highlights that climate change may not only affect food supply in NSW, but access to healthy and equitable diets, particularly among the most vulnerable populations. These findings could help reform relief strategies to help these communities adapt.”

【1】What can we learn about the study from paragraph 1?

A.The Australian government’s reaction to the study.

B.The influence of the study on the climate.

C.The principle of doing the study.

    D.The result of the study.

【2】What does the underlined word “tertiary” in paragraph 3 mean?

    A.Local.

    B.Third.

    C.Global.

    D.Rural.

【3】How is diet quality affected by damages to food supply?

    A.By decreasing food variety.

B.By shortening shelter life of food.

C.By reducing the amount of food supply.

    D.By reducing unhealthy processed foods.

【4】What can be the best title for the text?

A.Everyone is affected by climate change

B.Climatic events could affect surrounding areas

C.Climate threat to food supply creates chain effect

D.The vulnerable are affected most by climate change

  • 23、Have you ever heard someone say, “breakfast is the most important meal of the day”, or give you advice about why it’s vital to start the day with a healthy breakfast? It seems that this meal, for many of us, is necessary for our day to start well, but is it really that important?

The word “breakfast” comes from “breaking the fast”— the idea of ending the period in which we don’t eat during the night. The regeneration process that takes place while we sleep consumes some of our natural food reserves. Breakfast gives us an opportunity to replenish those reduced stores of things like protein and calcium. So, in that way, a healthy breakfast makes sense.

There are also many often-quoted studies which seem to connect a state of being overweight with not eating breakfast. In fact, it leads many health experts to advise a healthy breakfast to not only control but also lose weight. In a US study, 50,000 people were monitored over seven years, and those who ate a healthy breakfast were found to have a lower BMI (体重指数), which seems to suggest that breakfast may indeed help people maintain a healthy weight.

But it might not be as simple as that. Alexandra Johnstone, professor of appetite research at the University of Aberdeen, suggests those who do not have breakfast might be less aware of healthy diets and nutrition, and people who eat breakfast might have a healthier lifestyle overall exercising and not smoking, for example. And he also points out that with the rise in popularity of intermittent (间歇性的) fasting to lose weight, there may also be some benefits to not eating breakfast, like improving blood sugar control and lowering blood pressure.

So, while breakfast has its benefits, it might not be the most important meal. It seems that a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet might be more important for many of us than just one single meal.

A.Skipping breakfast may do good to our health.

C.Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

D.Intermittent fasting contributes greatly to weight loss.

  • 24、   As an archaeologist at Florida State University, Jessi Halligan and her team made a discovery, reported this past spring, in the Florida section of the Aucilla River.

Deep in a sinkhole, buried in a pile of sand and mastodon dung was a small, ancient knife used for hunting and cutting meat from the bone. The dung dates back roughly 14,500 years—some 1,500 years before the Clovis people, who were long thought to have been America’s first human residents.

Discover caught up with Halligan to learn more about the find and the world of underwater archaeology.

Q: First offwhat’s the impact of the Aucilla River knife discovery?

A: A lot of us thought the Americas were populated by folks who came from Siberia across the Bering Land Bridge into Alaska and Canada. HoweverCanada wasn’t walkable 14,500 years ago—it was covered by ice. So if people were in Florida 14,500 years ago and there was no land route through Canada, then the first people who came to the Americas probably came by boat. Therefore, we really need to start re-examining when and where people came from and what we thought we knew. We don't have all the answers we thought we did.

Q: Why did you decide to get into archaeology?

A: To me, if s that combination of things: using your body as a tool to help you understand things, as well as using your brain to think about what those things meant and applying that to the big picture about people.

Q: How many underwater archaeologists are there?

A: For every 100 archaeologists, maybe one to five of them are underwater archaeologists, and most of them are shipwreck archaeologists. I’m one of only a few dozen maybe in the whole world who focus on landscapes that got covered by sea level rise or prehistoric settlements that were land but ended up underwater.

    Q: _______________

A: The water’s really darkso you can’t see very far, and you can’t have as many people working at the same time. Also, you can’t talk underwater, so you have to communicate through hand signals, which can slow things down.

1According to Halligan, in what way is the Aucilla River knife discovery important?

A.It is among the discoveries that have been made by archaeologists like Halligan.

B.It can solve the mystery why Canada remained unwalkable 14,500 years ago.

C.It provides a new perspective to think about America’s first human residents.

D.It helps to answer where early Americans came from and when they arrived.

2What is special about Halligan as an archaeologist?

A.She excels in water sports like diving.

B.She studies the water area that used to be land.

C.She focuses mainly on the research on shipwreck. '

D.She is interested in early human residents in America.

3Which of the following is most likely to be the last question?

A.What are some of the challenges you face underwater?

B.What has been misunderstood about archaeology?

C.What appeals to you most in your job?

D.What good does this job give to you?
