二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、If you see a group of people dancing and singing on the street or in the railway station, you don't need to feel surprised. They are a flash mob(暴民). Who are they? Are they mobs? Don't be confused by their name. Actually, a flash mob is a group of people who gather suddenly in a public place, do something unusual for a brief period of time, and then quickly disappear.

They are usually organized with the help of the Internet or other digital communications networks. The messages may be sent to friends, who send to more people. At a predetermined time, they gather and perform some activities such as exchanging books, coming together to look at the sky, waving their hands and yelling something at the top of their voice for 30 seconds. Then, they quickly disappear before the police can arrive. Using mobile phones, the flash mob can change its place if the first one has been cancelled for any reason.

Bill Wasik, senior editor of Harper's Magazine, organized the first flash mob in Manhattan in May 2003 and the first successful flash mob gathered on June 3, 2003. Wasik claimed that he created the flash mob as a social experiment designed to laugh at fashion seekers and stress the cultural atmosphere of wanting to be an insider or part of “the next big thing”.

Flash mob gatherings can sometimes shock people. Such an activity might seem amusing and magical, but it also might frighten people who are not aware of what is taking place. Undoubtedly, flash mob can serve as good political tools and have great potential, such as using flash mob to advertise a product.

The flash mob is now becoming more and more popular. People use it to do many things. For example, in 2009, Michael Jackson’s fans took part in a flash mob to remember him. Hundreds of his fans gathered singing and dancing Michael’s famous song “Beat It” together. Flash mobs give people from all walks of life an opportunity to come together to create a memory.

    A. It can get together quickly.

    B. It can change its place freely.

    C. It can do activities suddenly.

    D. It can injure people seriously.

【2】How do flash mobs inform one another?

    ①By using the Internet.

    ②By writing letters.

    ③By yelling.

    ④By waving hands.

    ⑤By using mobile phones.

    ⑥By holding a meeting.

    A. ③④     B. ①⑤     C. ②⑥  D. ⑤⑥

【3】Why did Bill Wasik create the flash mob?

    A. To advertise some products.   B. To help people make friends.

    C. To laugh at fashion seekers. D. To create some memories.

【4】What can we learn about the flash mob from the passage?

    A. Bill Wasik organized the first successful flash mob in May, 2003.

    B. People are encouraged to take a more active part in an activity.

  • 22、阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

Have you ever heard the saying “All roads lead to Rome”? At one time, this was pretty much true. During the Roman Empire, lots of roads were built in order to move armies, send messages by courier (信使), and make trade easier.

The network of Roman roads was begun in 312 BC. It was demanded that the roads be built strong so that they would not fall down. Roman soldiers, supervised (监督) by engineers, laid down the roads in a special pattern of layers. There were all together 4 layers, which was made of different materials, such as sand, rocks, stones and so on.

Also, Roman roads were cambered(拱形). This means that they were built higher in the middle than on the edges, allowing rainwater to run off, which prevented flooding. We use the same technique in building roads today. The Romans also laid out roads over hills when necessary, setting them down in a zigzag (之字形的)pattern to make the road rise gradually.

All Roman roads had milestones (里程碑), placed every thousand paces (a Roman mile). The milestones told when the road was built, who was emperor at the time, the road’s destination, how far the traveler was from the destination, and how many miles had been traveled since the beginning of the road. This information was a great help to travelers.

Because of their excellence in construction, it really is no surprise that many parts of Roman road still exist today. These roadways are one of the most impressive achievements of the Roman Empire.

【1】The following description about Roman roads is true EXCEPT _____.

    A. Roman roads were built by the Roman soldiers directed by the engineers

    B. Roman roads could prevent flooding using the technique we don’t use today

【2】What information can you find on the milestones?

    A. The builders of the road.

    B. The materials used in building roads.

    C. The distance from one city.

    D. The time spent in building roads.

    【3】The passage mainly ______.

    A. explains the saying “All roads lead to Rome

    B. praises ancient Romans for their great achievements

    C. shows how great the Roman Empire was

    D. introduces the construction of the Roman roads

  • 23、Benefits of Solitude(独处)

    Learning about yourself

When you’re in any sort of social setting, you aren’t strictly yourself. You’re instead whoever you are in that context. For example, if you are a mother spending time with your children, you’re a parent in that situation. If you’re hanging out with coworkers, you’re a fellow employee. When you’re by yourself, you’re just you. This gives you an opportunity to learn how the various social contexts of your life shape your behavior and self perception(察觉). 【1】.

    Helping with self-regulation

It’s worth noting that spending time alone doesn’t have to have a harmful impact on your social life.

【2】. This is because spending time in solitude helps people develop the skills they need to regulate their own emotions. When you’re alone with your thoughts and feelings, you’re more aware of them. That means you have more opportunities to exercise a degree of control over how you think or feel about particular situations. This helps afterwards. 【3】, your self-regulation skills will help you determine if you’re talking too much or not enough, overreacting to perceived slights, making insensitive comments, and much more.

    【4】

Some of the greatest benefits of solitude are practical in nature. For instance, researchers have often found that, all other factors(因素)being equal, people who spend time alone are often more likely to develop certain strong talents than their peers. These talents can include playing an instrument, painting, cooking, or doing anything else that requires practice. It’s easy to understand why this is the case. 【5】, there are also many abilities that a person is more likely to develop when they have the opportunity to devote alone time to them.

    A.Developing skills

    B.Spending time on interests

C.That can help you make life changes

    D.When you’re socializing with/others later on

E.While people shouldn’t spend all their time with others

F.Although some skills are easier to develop with help from others

G.On the contrary, it can actually improve your social interactions over time

  • 24、Researchers reported a blind man who had received a gene of a light-sensing protein can now see and touch objects with the help of special goggles(护目镜).

His vision gains are modest—he cannot see colors or distinguish faces or letters. But if the treatment helps other study participants, it may offer advantages over other vision technologies for severely blind people. For scientists, the result is a milestone: the first published report of using a relatively new technology called optogenetics(光遗传学) to treat a disease in people. “It’s not the kind of vision people dream of, but it’s a big step,” said Jean Bennett of the University of Pennsylvania.

Optogenetics uses light to control neurons. Scientists add the gene to a light-sensitive protein called opsin(视蛋白) from algae or bacteria and then shine light on the cell to cause the opsin to change shape, which switches the neuron’s activity on or off. Since it was developed nearly 20 years ago, optogenetics has mostly been used as a tool to treat animals, brain diseases. But researchers hope it can one day treat diseases such as Parkinson’s disease and blindness.

“The eye is the simplest place to start because it is small and easy to access,” said Botond Roska, a physician-scientist at the University of Base.

The patients in the study have lost the retinal photoreceptor cells(视网膜感光细胞) that use human opsins to turn light into electrical signals relayed to the brain. But their eyes still have the cells that route these signals to the brain via the optic nerve. That means the patients could potentially gain vision by giving these cells a new kind of opsin.

【1】What can we know about the result from paragraph 2?

A.It has shortcomings but is important.

B.It can be used to treat blind people now.

C.It is the conclusion of previous research.

D.It is a way to help people become modest.

【2】Which is the key to the treatment?

    A.New goggles.

    B.Suitable opsin.

    C.Natural proteins.

    D.Retinal photoreceptor cells.

【3】What can we infer about optogenetics from the text?

A.It can benefit both humans and animals.

B.Scientists have never focused on it before.

C.If has been used to treat animals’ blindness.

D.Patients should know something about it.

【4】What may be the best title for the text?

A.A Report on a New Protein

B.Ways to Help Patients Stay Healthy

C.Researchers Find Blindness Can Be Cured

D.A Treatment Helps Blind Men Regain Some Vision

  • 26、Curiosity Is an Increasingly Rare Virtue

Most of the breakthrough discoveries and remarkable inventions throughout history, from flints (打火石) for starting a fire to self-driving cars, have something in common: They are the result of curiosity. But the journalist Ian Leslie, in his newly-published book Curious: The Desire to Know and Why Your Future Depends on It, insists that curiosity is a much overlooked human virtue, crucial to our success, and we are losing it.

Leslie presents considerable evidence for the claim that the society as a whole is growing less curious. In the U.S. and Europe, for example, the rise of the Internet, among other social and technological changes, has led to a declining consumption of news from outside the reader’s borders. Indeed, Google, for which Leslie expresses admiration, is also his frequent whipping boy (替罪羊): we seek only the information we want. But not everything is to be blamed on technology. The decline in interest in literary fiction is also one of the causes identified by Leslie.

Why is this a problem? Because without curiosity we will lose the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship (企业家精神). Worse still, that lack of curiosity produces a relative lack of knowledge, and the lack of knowledge is difficult if not impossible to compensate for later on.

Fortunately, some strategies can be employed to develop curiosity: If you just accept the world as it is without trying to dig deeper, you will certainly lose the ‘holy curiosity’. Of course, one effective way to dig deeper beneath the surface is asking questions: What is that? Why is it made that way? Who invented it? How does it work? ...And if you see learning as a burden, there’s no way you will want to dig deeper into anything. That will just make the burden heavier. But if you think of learning as something fun, you will naturally want to dig deeper.
