21、 It happened again last week. One of my relatives asked me, “My dear girl, you work in oncology(肿瘤科)? Isn't that depressing?” I have heard those questions many times as an oncology nurse and my response is always the same.I tell them no,and that I love it.And then I smile.
I work in the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at North Shore University Hospital.Together with my colleagues,we get to know most of our patients very well.We learn about their likes and dislikes. We get to meet their families and they take pictures of us.They tell us about a favorite vacation they once took and they wish us a good time when we are leaving for one. They also tell us to enjoy every moment of the day because we never know when life is going to change.
I am thinking of a recent experience we had with our patient Jim,a middle-aged man who is always expecting good things to happen and hopeful about the future. He was diagnosed with liver cancer a year ago and was facing the real possibility that he did not have a long time to live. But Jim voluntarily made up his mind to try for some very experimental treatments, even though the pain was almost too great to tolerate.
Eventually,Jim's disease went into remission. It is Easter Sunday now and he is home with his family.Jim got a miracle. An important reason why I work in oncology is that sometimes, not usually, not even very often, miracles do happen. And when they do,I am filled with gratitude and pride that as a nurse,I can be a part of that miraculous process.
Now you know why I smile when people ask me if I find oncology nursing to be sad or disappointing.I recall all the miracles I have seen and I remember what my patients have told me and I can't help but smile.

22、 Having experienced a shocking electrical accident, which caused him to become both blind and deaf, James Franco’s world became completely dark and quiet for almost ten years. The loss of sight and hearing threw him into such sorrow that he tried a few times to put an end to his life. His family, especially his wife, did their best to tend and comfort him and finally he regained the will to live.
One hot summer afternoon, he was taking a walk with a stick near his house when a thunderstorms started all at once. He stood under a large tree to avoid getting wet, but he was struck by the lightning. Witnesses thought he was dead but he woke up 20 minutes later, lying face down in muddy water. He was trembling badly, but when he opened his eyes, he could hardly believe what he saw: a tree and muddy road. When Mrs. Franco came running up to him, shouting to their neighbors to call for help, he could see her and hear her voice for the first time in nearly ten years.
The news of James regaining his sight and hearing quickly spread and many doctors came to examine him. Most of them said that he regained his sight and hearing from the shock he got from the lightning. However, none of them could give a compellent answer as to why this should happen. The only reasonable explanation given by one doctor was that, since James lost his sight and hearing as a result of a sudden shock, perhaps, the only way for him to regain them was another sudden shock.
【1】 The reason why James attempted to kill himself was that _________.
A. a terrible electrical accident happened to him
B. nobody in the whole world cared about him

C. An Unforgettable Experience

23、Even if you’re not an astronomy fan, chances are that you can easily recognize certain constellations (星座) and stars such as the Big Dipper (北斗七星) and the North Star.
The North Star is the brightest star in the constellation known as the Little Dipper. It is so-called because of the special position. If you were to stay up all night looking at the stars, you’d slowly see them move around a point in the sky known as the North Celestial Pole.
You would notice, however, that one star remains still. This is the North Star, so named for its location almost directly in line with the North Celestial Pole.
Due to its position in the sky, at one time sailors used the North Star as a navigational tool. By measuring the angle between the northern horizon and the North Star, a navigator could accurately determine the ship’s latitude.
But latitude, or the imaginary lines stretching across the globe parallel to the equator, was not enough to plot a ship’s location. Knowing latitude only allowed navigators to locate themselves on a particular latitude line at a particular distance from the equator. It was only with the invention of a way to accurately measure longitude that precise navigation became possible.
Although the North Star is no longer used by navigators, it remains a heavenly symbol of human curiosity and exploration.
【1】Which of the following statements about the North Star is TRUE?
A. The North Star is the brightest star in the night sky.
B. The North Star, together with some other stars, make up the Little Dipper.
C. The North Star moves along the same course with other stars.
D. The North Star is exactly located in line with the North Celestial Pole.
【2】What can be inferred from the passage?
A. The North Star could help navigators set a straight course of their ship in the past.
B. Real lines that are parallel to the equator are called “latitude”.
C. Either latitude or longitude could make precise navigation possible.
D. Now the North Star is no longer a navigational tool used by sailors.
【3】Which is probably the best title of the passage?
A. What is a navigational tool?
B. What can be called the earliest GPS?
C. What makes the North Star so special?
D. What is the symbol of human exploration?
24、I have happy memories of trips to Europe, but my trip to Romania (罗马尼亚) was unique. When I was there as recalled, it was like being in a “James Bond” movie. My husband was born there, but his family sent him to study in Italy. Before he left, his mother told him, “As long as I write in pencil, don’t come back. When I write to you in pen, it’s safe to return.” But she never wrote in pen.
My husband lived a poor life in Italy. He applied to go to America, but there was a limit in number and he was rejected. He was accepted by Canada, though, and from Calgary he jumped onto a train to San Francisco. There he stayed —illegally. He became a US citizen when we got married. By then he was a charming European with a Romanian accent and the manners of a prince.
With seven years’ experience in America, a US passport, and two children later, he felt it was safe to visit Romania. He hadn’t seen his mother, two sisters, and two brothers since he was sixteen. We flew to Munich, Germany; picked up the German-made car we had purchased in the States; and drove to Romania via Austria and Hungary. When we reached Bucharest, the capital city of Romania, his family was waiting outside his sister’s house to greet us. After a long time of hugging, kissing, and crying, his family also hugged me, the American wife with two young children. They had great interest in me. Few Americans visited Romania at that time, and most Romanians had little chance to travel. I had brought an English-Romanian dictionary with me and managed to communicate, using only nouns, with no verbs. My Romanian improved, and the family’s stock of English words increased, but mostly I spoke in broken, New York-accented Romanian. The sisters loved their gifts of skirts and purses, the brothers loved the radios, and the children loved the candy. We made side trips to the Black Sea and enjoyed sightseeing in beautiful mountains. Dining at outdoor cafes to the music of violins was fantastic with fancy flavor, but nothing was as special as family dinners.
Romania didn’t have many dry cleaners. Most homes had old-fashioned washing machines but no dryers, and it was a hot summer. My husband’s relatives didn’t want to risk dirtying their clothes. Their solution was as simple as it was shocking: the women only wore their bras(胸罩) and slips (衬裙) at dinner table. The men were eating without shirts. They all had jobs, so time was precious. Having dinner without proper clothes was a small inconvenience compared with the effort of washing clothes —at least in my husband’s home, perhaps all across Romania. I, of course, having just met them, ate fully clothed. I washed my clothes by hand and hung them outdoors to dry.
On the last night of our three-week stay, we had a large family dinner. I was tired of washing my clothes. So I pulled my dress over my head and placed it on the chair behind me. All men and women applauded for my action. Even with my poor Romanian, I understood that they were saying, “She’s part of our family now.”
My children were 4 and 5 at the time, but they still have memories of that trip. They know how to say, “Good morning.” and “There are apricots (杏子) on the tree.” I can still say, “Do you speak Romanian?”and “I swim in the Black Sea.” But most of all, I remember sitting at a long dining-room table in my bra, enjoying meatballs with fresh garlic .

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
A Precious Present
Wrinkles of confusion spread across Angela’s forehead as she unwrapped the gift from her best friend, Susan.
“I…I thought you could use it for something.” Susan’s stammered explanation did nothing to help us understand why a twelve-by-eighteen-inchold blue carpet was being presented as a birthday gift.
My heart went out to our daughter. Starting out at a new school during her freshmanyear had been a difficult adjustment. Until she met Susan, Angela had experienced little success making new friends.
The murmured “thanks” was barely heard as Angela tried hard not to allow her disappointment to show. She laid the piece of carpet on the kitchen counter, and the two girls headed outside to play with the family dogs.
The next morning, I carried a garbage bag outside. My heart sank as I lifted the lid of the garbage can and saw Susan’s carpet lying there. Hesitating only a moment, I picked it up. After giving it a light brushing, I brought it into the house and put it away in the hall closet.
“Susan invited us to go over to her house after school tomorrow and she’d like us to meet her foster mom(养母).” Several days later Angela announced as, she arrived home. Although her voice carried a so-what attitude, I sensed she was pleased by the invitation.
The following day we drove to the destination along the winding country road.
