21、Here is an astonishing and significant fact: Mental work alone cant make us tired. It sounds absurd. But a years ago, scientists tried to find out how long the human brain could labor without reaching a stage of fatigue (疲劳). To the amazement of these scientists, they discovered that blood passing through the brain, when it is active, shows no fatigue at all! If we took a drop of blood from a day laborer, we would find it full of fatigue toxins(毒素) and fatigue products. But if we took blood from the brain of an Albert Einstein, it would show no fatigue toxins at the end of the day.
So far as the brain is concerned, it can work as well and swiftly at the end of eight or even twelve hours of effort as at the beginning. The brain is totally tireless. So what makes us tired?
Some scientists declare that most of our fatigue comes from our mental and emotional attitudes. One of England’s most outstanding scientists, J.A. Hadfield, says, “The greater part of the fatigue from which we suffer is of mental origin. In fact, fatigue of purely physical origin is rare.” Dr. Brill, a famous American scientist, goes even further. He declares, “One hundred percent of the fatigue of sitting worker in good health is due to emotional problems.”
What kinds of emotions make sitting workers tired? Joy? Satisfaction? No! A feeling of being bored, anger, anxiety, tenseness, worry, a feeling of not being appreciated---those are the emotions that tire sitting workers. Hard work by itself seldom causes fatigue. We get tired because our emotions produce nervousness in the body.
【1】What surprised the scientists a few years ago?
A. Fatigue toxins could hardly be found in a laborer’s blood.
B. Albert Einstein didn’t feel worn out after a day’s work.
C. The brain could work for many hours without fatigue.

【2】 According to the author, which of the following can make sitting workers tired?
A. Challenging mental work. B. Unpleasant emotions.
C. Endless tasks. D. Physical labor.
【3】 What’s the author’s attitude towards the scientists’ idea?
A. He agrees with them. B. He doubts them.
C. He argues against them. D. He hesitates to accept them.
【4】We can infer from the passage that in order to stay energetic, sitting workers need to ___________.
A. have some good food B. enjoy their work
C. exercise regularly D. discover fatigue toxins
22、While peer(同辈)support has proved effective for adults with mental health challenges, scientific evaluations of teenagers helping one another are difficult to find- even though some limited studies show that teenagers experiencing the stress of adolescence manage better emotionally when they are with their friends than with their parents. YouthLine is one of the six youth lines across the USA that have demonstrated how teenagers can relate to their peers over the Internet or the phone in a way that adults are sometimes unable to do. These peer-run crisis lines are coming together to bring more young voices to crisis intervention (干预). The six youth lines, which together speak to more than 50,000 young people each year, have monthly conference calls to share best practices.
YouthLine trains volunteers who are between 15 and 20 years old. They answer calls from teenagers who reach out to their helpline by phone, text, chat or email. Volunteers go through 55 hours of training where they listen as their peers take calls. YouthLine asks its teenagers to commit to one three-and-a-half-hour shift per week for at least a year, but a considerable number of them sign up for extra shifts, and stay for several years.
Still, the model has its skeptics, who don’t think teenagers can or should take calls from people in crisis. Crisis Text Line, a nonprofit that provides crisis intervention by text, decided to avoid using volunteers under the age of 18 for a few reasons. Wendy Farmer, the chief executive of Behavioral Health Link in Atlanta, also had reservations about the model, until she visited YouthLine last August. Ms. Farmer spent a night on shift and conducted a focus group with some of the volunteers. What surprised Ms. Farmer was not only how effective these teenagers were at helping their peers get through challenges, but also the way that work helped them build their own resilience (适应力).

23、My parents both left school at 14. They could read and write, but except for a quick look at the daily newspaper, reading and writing didn't play a big part in their lives. There were very few books in the house. When I was only 14 years old my father gave me an important letter that he'd written to the bank and asked me to check it for grammar and spelling mistakes. And there were quite a lot. He never wrote letters or postcards or even Christmas cards. So when he had to write he wasn't comfortable or confident. Does that mean that my father had a ‘low level of literacy (读写能力)’? I don't think so.
There are lots of different definitions (定义) of literacy. Some experts define it as having the reading and writing skills that you need to be independent in your everyday life. So, for example, if you can read instructions, write a cheque, fill in a form — anything that you need to do in everyday life — then you are ‘functionally literate’.
If you live in a society where most people are literate then you will feel ashamed and avoid situations in which you have to read or write. A friend's father finally admitted to his family that he couldn't read when he was 45 years old. He had bought the newspaper every day and pretended to read it.
Being illiterate can have a big effect on people's lives. Worldwide statistics show that literacy problems are associated with poverty and a lack of political power. More women than men are illiterate. Illiterate people have worse health, bigger families and are more likely to go to prison. So literacy campaigns must be a good thing. But don't forget that an illiterate person, or someone with a low level of literacy, isn't necessarily stupid or ignorant (无知的) — and may not be unhappy at all. Knowledge and wisdom isn't only found in writing.
【1】What do we know about the author's father?
A. He read a lot. B. He rarely wrote.
C. He couldn't write. D. He bought many books.
【2】What does the author say about “functionally literate” people?
A. They are usually mind readers.
B. They can read between the lines.
C. They are mainly dependent on others.
D. They are able to read and write to survive.
【3】Why did the friend's father buy the newspaper regularly?
A. To keep his secret.
B. To be fashionable.
C. To enjoy the daily news.
D. To further his study
【4】What is literacy irrelevant to according to the author?
A. Health. B. Poorness.
C. Influence. D. Happiness.
24、People have speculated (思索) for centuries about a future without work. Some imagine that the coming work-free world will be defined by inequality: A few wealthy people will own all the capital, and the masses will struggle in a wasteland. A different prediction holds that without jobs to give their lives meaning future people will simply become lazy and depressed.
But it doesn’t necessarily follow from findings like these that a world without work would be filled with dissatisfaction. Such visions are based on the downsides of being unemployed in a society built on the concept of employment. In the absence of work, a society designed with other ends in mind could provide strikingly different circumstances for the future of labor and leisure.
These days, spare time is relatively rare for most workers. “When I come home from a hard day’s work, I often feel tired.” says John Danaher, a lecturer at the National University of Ireland, adding, “In a world in which I don’t have to work. I might feel rather different — perhaps different enough to throw myself into a hobby with the enthusiasm usually reserved for professional matters.”
Daniel Everett, an anthropologist (人类学家) at Bentley University studied a group of hunter-gathers in the Amazon called the Piranha for years. According to Everett, while some might consider hunting and gathering as work, hunter-gatherers don’t. “They think of it as fun.” he says. “They don’t have a concept of work the way we do.”
Everett described a typical day for the Piraha: A man might get up, spend a few hours fishing, have a barbecue, and play until the evening. Does this relaxing life lead to the depression and purposelessness seen among so many of today’s unemployed? “I’ve never seen anything like depression there, except people who are physically ill.” Everett says. While many may consider work necessary for human life, work as it exists today is a relatively new invention in the course of human culture. “We think it’s bad to just sit around with nothing to do,” says Everett. “For the Piraha, it’s quite a desirable state.”
【1】How does the author introduce the topic in Paragraph 1?
A.By comparing wealthy people with the majority.
B.By giving a definition to inequality in society.
C.By listing different predictions of a work-free world
D.By picturing a lazy and depressed atmosphere.
