二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、They say chocolate makes everything better, and apparently wagyu beef is no exception. For the past 10 years, the Mayura Station Farm in southern Australia has been feeding its wagyu cattle chocolate and other sweets mixed with their regular feed, and the results have been shocking.

When Scott de Bruin, managing partner at Mayura Station, returned to his father's farm in the Limestone coast of Australia, in 1998, he knew he wanted to do something special to make their beef stand out. But he didn't know exactly how he was going to do that, so he consulted a cattle nutrition specialist from Japan and spent two years experimenting with different feed before deciding on the final daily ration(配给量) for his wagyu cows – a special mix of regular feed, chocolate, gummy bears, strawberries and cream flavored gummy snakes. Each cow eats up to 2 kilograms of ground and partially broken chocolate delivered by Cadbury's every day.

Adding chocolate to the daily diet of cows at Mayura Station started out as a simple experiment, but it ended up making their luxury beef one of the most appreciated in the world. “Many of my customers come to enjoy Mayura beef two to three times a week. They love how the beef has the perfect balance of fat, rich flavor and tender texture(质地),” Michelin star chef Umberto Bombana told Forbes Magazine.

Shane Osborn, Head Chef and Co-Owner of Arcane Restaurant in Hong Kong, added that its unique sweetness, hint of nuttiness and buttery texture make Mayura beef “the ultimate steak”.

Asked if the milk chocolate has a negative effect on the cattle's health, Scott de Bruin says “No, unlike humans – who may start eating chocolates at a very young age for over several decades – these cattle (raised on chocolates for only four months) won't see the long-term negative effects of chocolates in their system.”

As you can imagine, Mayura luxury beef is not cheap. Forbes reports that a 10.5oz-steak sells for $288, but those who can afford it claim it's worth every penny.

1What is the purpose of the first paragraph?

    A. To promote the act.   B. To present happiness.

    C. To show the author’s shock   D. To introduce the topic.

2What did Bruin do after returning to his father’s farm in 1998?

    A. He began to work hard.   B. He started to do research.

    C. He came to learn about cows.   D. He worked for a Japanese specialist.

3Why did many customers come to enjoy Mayura beef frequently?

    A. Because his service is the first class.

    B. Because the price of beef is rather low.

    C. Because his beef tastes good and nutritious.

    D. Because his advertisement is fairly good.

4What does Bruin think of the influence of the milk chocolate on cattle?

    A. It has no bad influence in the long term.   B. It has long-term effects.

    C. It has short-term effects.   D. It makes him puzzled.

  • 22、I just flew from Berlin, Germany, to Atlanta, Georgia, and it took me 24 hours due to the weather-related delay during my stopover in New York. Like many other passengers, I was so worn out, annoyed, and helpless that I could barely hold it together.

The pilot, called Thierry Beyeler, was different. He left the flight deck and walked to the dissatisfied passengers to apologize and comfort them. The pilot’s appropriate behavior set the tone and ensured no one got angry. It reminded me of the beauty of “elegance under pressure”. Thierry Beyeler was a pilot with Swiss International Air Lines, for which he flew various aircraft. During the delay, I had the chance to speak to Beyeler and learn about his experience as a pilot.

He said, “Flying is a bit like eating chocolate. I love every flight. However, when you have16 flights in four days, then that’s too much chocolate for me...”. As for crisis situations, he did have a few: “Once, I had an engine failure, but that’s rare, and we handled it. Another time, we had smoke in the cabin (机舱), and we went to land quickly. In the end, it was just the air conditioning having some problems…” He believes, “As Murphy’s law puts it, ‘What can go wrong will go wrong’. So think about it and try to prepare mentally.”

Beyeler continued, “Compared with cars, a flight is a high-risk environment; it’s not like riding a bike. Even if there was a minor error, it could have fatal consequences. Every pilot is quite professional in the field. But it is the strong mindset in the chaos that plays the key role. Humans intervene in technical systems to solve problems countless times a day, and it would be dangerous if the pilot became nervous and forgot that.”

I’ve been touched by Beyeler’s words. I understand that human factors, including confidence, courage, responsibility, and emotional intelligence, are becoming more and more important in today’s world.

【1】How did Beyeler sound facing the long delay according to the text?

    A.Depressed and tired.

    B.Calm and optimistic.

    C.Helpless and anxious.

    D.Annoyed and sympathetic.

【2】What does Beyeler want to show by mentioning “eating chocolate”?

    A.Flying brings him much fun.

    B.Flying involves various crisis situations.

C.Too many flight tasks can be unbearable for him.

D.Too many crisis situations have happened to him.

【3】What does Beyeler consider critical, for pilots during emergencies?

A.Gaining a good sense of time.

    B.Having great strength of mind.

C.Knowing all the technical systems well.

D.Having a good grasp of professional knowledge.

【4】What did the author think of his communication with Beyeler?

    A.Boring.

    B.Frightening.

    C.Rewarding.

    D.Confusing.

【5】Which of the following would be the best title for the text?

    A.An adventurous trip to Atlanta.

B.The potential crisis situations on the plane.

    C.Major factors influencing traffic safety.

D.The lessons from the pilot Beyeler.

  • 23、Yelp, the San Francisco Internet company that makes reviews of restaurants and other businesses across a large part of America, is getting into the food delivery business.

Today, the company has announced that it has agreed to acquire Eat24, a food company that delivers food to homes on behalf of partner restaurants. Yelp is paying $134 million for the company—$75 million in cash and the rest in stock. Eat24 works with 20,000 restaurants in more than 1,500 cities all over the U.S.

On Yelp's reviews site, you can find new restaurants to suit your tastes, and now that the company is acquiring Eat24, the idea is that it will also let you take the next step: order food to your door.

“If you're looking at a restaurant, you want to be able to book that restaurant,” Yelp co-founder and CEO Jeremy said in a Tuesday interview. “If we can integrate(融入) that into the Yelp experience, it makes the site much better.”

The move is just one way that some of Internet's most recognizable names are branching into online food delivery to improve their existing business. Last August, payments company Square bought Caviar, a high-end quick food delivery service. And that same month, Uber tested a fast food delivery service called UberFRESH, which aimed to deliver meals from local restaurants to customers in less than 10 minutes.

In each case, food delivery can provide an added source of income, and it can also help these companies push the use of their existing services. The market for food delivery is hardly small, and mobile technologies can speed up the process, potentially expanding the business even further.

1How does Yelp pay for the company Eat24?

    A. Totally by cheque.   B. Totally in cash.   C. Only in credit   D. Partly in stock.

2What can customers NOT do on the new Yelp's website?

    A. Finding the restaurants they like.   B. Booking a restaurant they like.

    C. Enjoying much cheaper food.   D. Ordering food to their door

3What does the underlined word “acquire” in Paragraph 2 mean?

    A. Purchase..   B. Claim.   C. Request.   D. Bargain

4From the passage, we can infer that many companies ________.

    A. begin to set up their own food branches

    B. begin to attach importance to food delivery making

    C. make little money from their existing business

    D. give up the present business and turn to food making

  • 24、Dogs have an amazing sense of smell thanks to 300million smell receptors in their noses, compared to only five million in the human nose. Medical dogs are trained by smelling samples of people already diagnosed with cancer and those of people without the disease so they can learn to tell the difference.

Dr Claire Guest began training her dog Daisy to smell out the killer disease in urine(小便) and breath samples(样品) when she was young. So far Daisy has found cancer in 551 patients, of which 93 per cent were accurate. And she discovered Dr Guest’s breast cancer before it was diagnosed– the first time she has discovered the disease actually growing in someone’s body, rather than by smelling a sample.

Dr Guest, 50, chief executive of charity Medical Detection Dogs, said: “She pushed against my body with her nose repeatedly I pushed her away, but she pushed against me again, clearly upset. She pushed me so hard that it hurt me.  “Her behaviour was totally out of character she was normally such a happy dog ... I felt the tender area where she’d pushed me, and over the next few days I discovered the tiniest lump(肿块).

“If it wasn’t for Daisy it would have gone hidden for much longer and could have been more serious,” Dr Guest added. “My own pet labrador saved my life.”

Animal rescue charity Blue Cross presented Daisy with a medal for her achievements. She faced tough competition, including JJ, a bomb detection dog who has saved soldiers’ lives in Afghanistan.

Steve Goody, the charity’s deputy chief executive, said: “Cancer affects the lives of thousands of people and Daisy has made a huge contribution to the diagnosis and early treatment of cancers she’s a very deserving medal recipient.”

Daisy is now helping to train a team of 12 dogs at Medical Detection Dogs and is a ‘senior consultant’ for the UK’s first ever trial using dogs to discover breast cancer.

【1】Why was Daisy awarded a medal?

    A. Because she can help discover cancer early.

    B. Because she can smell the urine and breath samples.

    C. Because she has saved many people’s lives by barking.

    D. Because she has saved many soldiers’ lives in Afghanistan.

【2】Which of the following words is closest in meaning to “recipient” in the last paragraph ________but one?

    A. contributor  B. ancestor C. helper  D. receiver

【3】 How did Daisy discover Dr Guest’s cancer?

    A. By smelling the urine sample.

    B. By smelling the breath sample.

    C. By smelling the hidden cancer.

    D. By pushing Dr Guest hard.

【4】 From the text we can infer that __________.

    A. Cancer is easy to cure.

    B. Daisy and JJ competed hardly for the medal.

    C. Daisy is training other dogs to discover breast cancer.

    D. Dogs’ special sense of discovering cancer is highly valued.

Any day that I had to go to the airport was the worst day of my life, and as a traveling appliance salesman, I had to fly quite a bit. On this particular day in 2010. 1 was assigned to a middle seat. Back then, I was so fat that I couldn't fit down the aisle (走廊) facing forward,so I was forced to walk sideways like a crab. I weighed between 340 and 360 pounds; the exact figure depended on whether I measured my weight before or after one of my enormous meals. When I finally squeezed into my seat, the seat belt wasn't long enough to fit around my 52-inch waist. They never were.

I woke up the next morning knowing that I needed to change. I started looking for signs that might lead me toward a better life and immediately a sign showed up. I turned on the TV and happened to catch an interview with former president Bill Clinton. He said he'd been under the care of a doctor who put him on a whole-food, plant-based diet. He lost weight without feeling hungry, and he was healthier and stronger than he'd been since his twenties. I never imagined my sign would come from Bill Clinton, but there he was.

I had no idea what a “whole-food, plant-based diet” was. I went online and searched for a doctor who could help me. That's when I found Preeti. 1 felt hopeful when she agreed to see me the next day. The doctor recommended a low calorie diet and suggested some moderate exercises I could do in my home. She also suggested that I go to a shelter and adopt a dog.“Exercise?”I asked, “A dog?" I couldn't believe what I heard. But, she said. “A dog is a good companion. Plus, you live in an apartment. which means the dog has to be walked. So if you walk your dog twice a day, that will be your exercise."

    Paragraph 1:

With doubts and hesitation, I drove up to a dog sheller near where I lived.
