21、Last night my husband and I were on the way to a show. We were both hungry and wanted to grab a quick bite on our way there, so we swung through a Jack-In-the-Box-Drive-thru Restaurant and placed our order.
When we got up to the window the lady smiled at me, which is sometimes rare and asked how I was doing while she was collecting our money for the food. I replied, "Fine, and how are you'?" She went to get our order ready and I asked my husband to pass my "Drive-thru Smile bag" to me. He handed it to me and watched in amazement as I gathered together a "You make a difference" paper, including a smile card, a smile stamp and a smile button.
She came back to the window almost before I finished putting it all together. Without looking too closely she passed the bag and said, "Thank you. Have a good day." I said, "Wait! This is for you." As I placed the little smile gifts in her hand a smile spread across her face. As she looked at the items it got a little bigger but when I thanked her for her smile there was no holding back. She gave the biggest smile and she was laughing. It was very heartwarming.
My husband was very impressed by it. It made him smile too. It just takes a little effort to connect in a human way to everyone we have dealings with, even with something as small as a Drive-thru transaction.
Remember, we all make a difference!

22、IQ is set at around 20 years old and later effort will not improve it much, recent research finds. The complexity of people’s jobs, higher education, socializing and reading all probably have little effect on cognitive (认知的) ability.
Naturally, these activities have many other benefits, but little influence on IQ. However, education is particularly important at an early age when the brain is still developing. By early adulthood, though, most people’s IQ has settled down.
While some studies have suggested that cognitive activities in later life can improve IQ, Professor William Kremen, the study’s first author, thinks otherwise, “The findings suggest that the impact of education, occupational complexity and participation in cognitive activities on later life cognitive function likely reflects the opposite. In other words, they are largely the results of young adult intellectual capacity.”
The study included 1,009 men now in their 50s and 60s whose IQ was assessed when they were around 20 years old. They were given tests of abstract reasoning, verbal fluency and memory, along with other cognitive measures.
The results showed that most of the difference between the men’s IQs in mid-life was explained by the difference between them at around 20-years-old. In comparison, the complexity of the job they had, the intellectual activities they engaged in, and their education in the meantime hardly had any effect on their IQ. Brain scans also showed that IQ at age 20 was associated with the surface area of the cerebral cortex, which is the brain’s gray matter, the part that performs the higher functions of thinking, perceiving and language.
Most of the benefits of education for IQ likely happen before young adulthood, said Professor Kremen. “Our findings suggest we should look at this from a lifetime perspective. Improving cognitive reserve and reducing later life cognitive decline may really need to begin with more access to quality childhood and adolescent education.”
【1】What does Kremen’s study mainly focus on?
A.Who has high IQ.
B.How is IQ improved
C.What determines IQ.
D.When is IQ fixed.

A.To evaluate their IQ in mid-life.
B.To improve their cognitive abilities.
C.To introduce cognitive measures to them.
D.To find out reasons for their IQ differences.
【4】What does Kremen suggest people do?
A.Get engaged in complex jobs.
B.Keep on learning for a lifetime.
C.Have a high-quality adolescent education.
D.Join in as many cognitive activities as possible.
23、Speak confidently and think logically. Year 13 schoolboy Arunabh Prakash can't agree more. Anmabh is one of the five students that will represent New Zealand at the 26th World Schools Debating Championships (WSDC) to be held in Thailand from August 5 to l5 this year.
"You've got to be persuasive, regardless of the fact that you believe in a topic or not," says the 17-year-old.
"There are a lot of speakers who are eloquent (雄辩的) but find it difficult to think logically and then there are those who have a good argument but can't deliver."
Endurance (忍耐) is another quality he says one must have in the heated arena (赛场) of expressing opinions and ideas.
"There are times when you have to debate for five hours at a go and are completely exhausted. It's quite intense. You must have the energy to debate for long hours," says Arunabh, who began debating in year 10.
The WSDC is a debating competition in the world for high school students from different countries. It involves four prepared debates and four impromptu debates — debates without specific preparations.
To gain selection for the national team for the global final, Arunabh had to compete with regional teams. Despite the mounting pressure, he says he was confident of winning.

24、Queen Elizabeth is known for her devotion to her country, her close relationships with her family and, most importantly, her corgis.
Unfortunately, over the weekend she lost the last of her royal corgis, Willow. According to The Daily Mail, the 15-year-old dog had to be put to death after suffering a cancer-related illness. This marks the first time that the 91-year-old Queen is without a corgi in the royal household since World War Ⅱ.
In 2015, Monty Roberts, the Queen’s dog trainer, shared some details with Vanity Fair about her pets. Roberts encouraged Queen Elizabeth to continue breeding (繁殖) corgis, but, in her old age, she didn’t want to leave any young dog behind. She did, however, adopt a full-grown Corgi named Whisper in 2017, after its owner, who was a gatekeeper at the palace, died.
It was also said that Queen Elizabeth was worried she’d trip over the dogs playing at her feet. It was a pretty real fear. Former royal staff Paul Burrell claimed that he was once tripped by nine corgis while walking them down the steps at the palace.
Willow was a dog with equally blue blood, although she never found social media stardom. It was a 14th-generation child of Susan, the corgi who was gifted to Elizabeth on her 18th birthday by her father, King George Ⅵ.
One of Willow’s most memorable moments was posing with James Bond at the 2012 London Olympics. Holly, Queen’s another corgi, also starred in the video, but she passed away more than a year ago, at the age of 13.
This is truly the end of an era, as Queen Elizabeth has owned more than 30 corgis throughout her life. At one point, she had 13 at once.
“She was sad for each loss of her corgis over the years, but she has been particularly upset about Willow’s death,” a Buckingham Palace source told The Daily Mail. “It is probably because Willow was the last link to her parents and a pastime that goes back to her own childhood.”
【1】What happened to Willow over the weekend according to The Daily Mail?
A.It was killed in a car accident.
B.It was put to death.
C.It had an unsuccessful operation.
D.It was found to have cancer.
【2】Why did Queen Elizabeth stop breeding corgis according to Monty Roberts?
A.She was too weak to take care of the dogs.
B.She became tired of those crazy little dogs.
C.She was afraid that she’d trip over the dogs.
D.She was worried about the dogs after her death.
【3】What do the underlined words “blue blood” in paragraph 5 probably mean?
A.Noble ancestor.
B.Bad mood.
C.Cold heart.
D.Terrible disease.
【4】What does Willow probably mean for Queen Elizabeth?
A.The end of an era.
B.Her control over the country.
C.A tie with her parents.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Yesterday I was leaving a restaurant when I saw a homeless man having a hot dog, just sitting on the ground. He had a soda with him, too. He was eating that hot dog as if he hadn’t eaten for months and the scene just broke my heart.
I was afraid that I didn’t have extra money at that time to buy him more food. I said to myself the next time I had money and I saw the man, I would buy him food.
Recently, I had done part-time jobs all day so I had some extra money. But I thought of going to Walmart to buy the water drinking fountain (饮水机) for my cat, which cost a lot. I ended up with just $5 left on my card and I had $2 cash. Suddenly, I found I forgot to buy a gallon of water for the new cat water drinking fountain. I didn’t return to Walmart. Somehow, I went to the same restaurant to buy the gallon of water instead.
I came out of the restaurant and there was that man again and he was going to sit down on the ground again. All he had was a drink. I kept saying to him, “Hi, sir, let’s go inside and I’ll pay for you.”
The other day, on my app for shopping, it had a buy-one-get-one free slice of pizza and I told him. His face beamed with happiness, “Oh, I would like to have that!” The coupon (优惠券) was out of date, but I still had enough money so I bought him two slices of pizza. When I asked him if he would like a cup of ice cream, he said sure.
