  • 22、   My first memory of volunteering was when I was 7 years old. I still recall that day: it was warm but breezy, everyone was in a good mood, and we finished ahead of schedule. Certainly, I was too young to do any heavy lifting, but I remember feeling a wave of emotion when we completed the project.

To now, I’m still addicted to that feeling. I still love giving back to the place I now call home, the San Francisco Bay Area. Many animals shelters in California lack staff, including the City of Stockton Animal Shelter. My background is in marketing, and in my spare time, I act as webmaster to keep their website up to date.

And with a love for animals, I recently just started at Rabbit Rescue as a rabbit socializer! I spend 2 hours a week hanging out with rabbits to make them perfect pets. From just sitting with them to get them used to humans or playing with them to give them exercise, it is the perfect excuse to get out and help animals in need!

As you can tell, I have a soft spot for animals. Even as a young child, I wanted to be the voice for them. As I grew older and gained more professional talents, skilled volunteering is where I found the greatest reward when using my marketing skills for good and playing with rabbit—now that’s volunteer heaven!

Many people do not want to bring work home. But what if you were using your” work” to help a cause! That is why I think skilled volunteering is so important. Countless nonprofit organizations do not have the budget to hire for every skill. With skilled volunteering, professionals can set aside a few hours a month for specific tasks like graphic designing and accounting. Next time you’re looking for a volunteer job, consider using your professional skills to make a difference!

1We can learn from the first paragraph that    .

A.The writer finished the work on schedule.

B.The first memory of volunteering is still fresh.

C.The writer was old enough to lift heavy things.

D.It was rather cold on the first day of his volunteering.

2In his free time, the writer   .

    A.volunteers as a webmaster. B.learns marketing skills.

C.looks for a volunteer job. D.works for a rabbit socializer.

3In the writer's eyes, he can find the greatest reward from ______.

    A.training rabbits. B.helping animals.

    C.professional talents. D.skilled volunteering.

4In the last paragraph, the writer wants to tell us ______.

A.the ways to become a skilled volunteer.

    B.the importance of skilled volunteering.

C.how to use skills to make a difference.

D.how to spend our spare time.

  • 23、One of the big knocks against solar panels (太阳能电板) is how much land they take up compared to how much power they produce. But what if there were a ready-made source of open land nearby to cities and towns that were guaranteed not to be used for anything else?

As it turns out, landfills (垃圾填埋场) are built into solar farms all over the country. While they present a bigger challenge than building one on flat ground, the idea of turning landfills and brownfields from their waste state into a new service for the community is deeply appealing.

For example, Nexamp’s Solar Star Urbana Landfill community solar farm occupies nearly 40 acres on a landfill. It features nearly 14,000 solar panels and produces 5.2 megawatts of clean energy for low and middle income residents (居民), who receive discounts on their energy bill if they sign up to take on the solar energy. Annapolis Maryland has one too-55,000 panels on an 80-acre landfill, producing power for 2,500 people.

It isn’t the easiest thing to build a solar farm on a landfill. For one thing, the traditional method of securing the panels on concrete struts (支柱) buried in the ground is out of the question, as it would break the cap on the landfill. This also currently puts a landfill solar panel out of the reach of current technologies that allow the movement of the panels to follow along the sun.

However there are also aspects which are easier, for example there are usually communities that live nearby landfills, and the local cheap power access can help save them money. Furthermore, there’s no risk of facing high land prices.

There are more than 10,000 closed or capped landfills around the country, and perhaps as many as 4,000 of them could be turned into solar farms immediately.

【1】How do residents benefit from taking on the solar energy?

A.They pay less for the energy bill.

B.Their land is paid for higher prices.

C.The energy they use is much cleaner.

D.They receive more energy than promised.

    【2】What’s Paragraph 4 mainly about?

A.The disadvantages of a traditional method.

B.The slow progress of current technologies.

C.The potential danger brought by solar energy.

D.The technical challenges of building a solar farm.

【3】What’s the author’s attitude towards building landfill solar farms?

    A.Critical.

    B.Ambiguous.

    C.Favorable.

    D.Objective.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Cold wind swept through the weathered coats of five-year-old Rebecca and her mother as they searched their small yard for the source of a faint quack (鸭叫). “Over here, mommy,” Rebecca pointed under a bush.

The source of this noise was a small skinny brown wild duck that was limping (跛行) around on only one good foot. They got down on their knees in the freezing cold, and cornered the duck against an old wooden fence. Rebecca’s mom gently grabbed the helpless duck. It put up little resistance since it was tired and hungry.

They took it inside the small wooden house. Rebecca’s mom looked closer at the homeless creature. One of its legs was injured. It was in pretty bad shape. “ Maybe we should take it to the animal clinic.” Rebecca said.

“But Rebecca, the clinic is probably closed now, being it’s Christmas Eve.” And in the back of her mind, she thought to herself, “I don’t know if we can afford an expensive bill right now.”

But looking at the poor little duck that seemed like it was near the end of its rope, Rebecca’s mom decided to try their luck. They wrapped the weak duck in an old worn towel. Its neck extended out and down from the towel. They walked out into the icy cold evening, with the sun just setting below the horizon. As they walked down the street, the duck made a faint “quaaaack” in desperation. The evening grew darker and colder by the moment.

After a couple of blocks, they noticed a white sign up ahead with black letters ‘Animal Clinic’. But their hopes were dashed (破灭) as they stared at a darkened storefront and a ‘Closed’ sign.

“What do we do now?” she thought to herself, both cold and tired.

    注意:

    1. 续写词数应为150左右;
