二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、I’ve come back to check on a baby. Just after dusk I’m in a car down a muddy road in the rain, past rows of shackled (戴镣的) elephants, their trunks swinging. I was here five hours before, when the sun was high and hot and tourists were on elephants’ backs.

Walking now, I can hardly see the path with my phone’s flashlight. When the wooden fence post stops me short, I point my light down and follow a current of rainwater across the floor until it washes up against three large, gray feet. A fourth foot twisted above the surface, tied tightly by a short chain and choked by ring of metal spikes (尖刺). When the elephant gets tired and puts her foot down, the spikes press deeper into her ankle.

Meena is four years and two months old, still a child as elephants go. Khammon Kongkhaw, her caretaker, told me earlier that Meena wears the spiked chain because she tends to kick. Kongkhaw has been responsible for Meena here at Maetaman Elephant Adventure, near Chiang Mai, in northern Thailand, since she was 11 months old. He said he keeps her on the spiked chain only during the day and takes it off at night. But it’ s night now.

I ask Jin Laoshen, the Maetaman worker, why her chain is still on. He says he doesn’t know.

Maetaman is one of many animal attractions in and around tourist-crowded Chiang Mai. Meena’s life is set to follow the same track as many of the roughly 3,800 captive (被捕获的) elephants in Thailand. When Meena is too old or sick to give rides—maybe at 55, maybe at 75, she’ll die. If she's lucky, she’ll get a few years of retirement. She'll spend most of her life on a chain.

【1】Why does the author decide to come back?

A.To check the baby elephant Meena.

    B.To feed those shackled elephants.

    C.To release those shackled elephants.

D.To help an injured worker in Maetaman.

【2】What can we conclude from the second paragraph?

A.The author is scared walking in the path.

B.Meena is treated badly and very painful

C.Meena only has three healthy legs.

D.One of Meena’s leg is badly broken.

【3】What’s the author’s attitude towards those elephants?

    A.Indifferent.

    B.Critical.

    C.Sympathetic.

    D.Negative.

【4】We can infer that the purpose of the author’s writing is______________.

A.to describe those elephants to attract tourists around the world

B.to draw people’s attention to caring about the fate of those elephants

C.to tell readers the story of a baby elephant in Chiang Mai, Thailand

D.to tell the reason why the number of elephants is decreasing

  • 22、How Much Music Can You Make?

On Nov. 18, 1995, violinist Perlman, performed a concert in New York City. Stricken with polio(小儿麻痹症)as a child, Perlman painfully walked with the aid of two crutches(拐杖)to a chair in the middle of the stage. He carefully laid the crutches on the floor, extended one leg forward and the other underneath his chair, picked up his instrument and nodded to the conductor to begin.

But something went wrong. After only seconds of playing, one of the strings on his violin broke. The sound was so loud that the audience immediately knew what had happened and fully expected the concert to be stopped until another string or even another instrument could be found. However, Perlman surprised them. He closed his eyes and then signaled the conductor to begin again. The orchestra restarted where they had left off and Perlman played on three strings. He played with passion and power. All the time he worked out new fingering in his mind to make up for the missing string. A work that few people could play well on four strings Perlman played on three.

When he finished, an awesome silence hung in the room. And then as one, the crowd rose to their feet and cheered wildly. Applause burst forth from every corner of the concert hall as fans appreciated his talent and his courage.

Perlman smiled and wiped the sweat from his brow. Then he raised his bow to quiet the crowd and said, in a quiet tone, "You know, sometimes it is the artist's task to find out how much music you can still make with what you have left." Disease left him with less power than he had before, yet he went on. Playing a concert on three strings is like his motto—he went on with what he had left and still made music.

And isn't that true with us? Our task is to find out how much music we can still make with what we have left, for I'm convinced that the world needs the music only you and I can make.

1After the string on his violin broke, Perlman__________.

    A. found another instrument   B. stopped the concert

    C. played on three strings   D. changed a new string

2The audience cheered and clapped to show their ________.

    A. appreciation   B. talent and courage

    C. engagement   D. passion and power

3Perlman succeeded due to his ________.

    A. cautiousness   B. patience

    C. kindness   D. faith

4The story inspires people to ________.

    A. go with the flow   B. share music with others

    C. employ what we have   D. smile and keep quiet

  • 23、While psychologists have studied topics like happiness, optimism, and other human strengths for decades, positive psychology wasn’t officially identified as a branch of psychology until 1998 when Martin Seligman was elected president of the American Psychological Association (APA). Seligman suggested that psychology had become too focused on mental illness. While this had brought about valuable treatments that enabled psychologists to treat a number of diseases and disorders that made people less unhappy. It meant that psychology was neglecting what was good about life—and what the average person could improve.

Seligman called for research into what makes normal people’s lives positive and fulfilling and suggested that the field should develop interventions that could make people happier. He stated that psychology should be just as concerned with nurturing (滋养) the good things in life as it was with healing the bad.

Seligman made positive psychology the theme of his term as APA president and used his role to popularize the word. From there the field took off. It received a great deal of attention from mainstream media outlets. Meanwhile, the first Positive Psychology summit was held in 1999, followed by the first International conference on Positive Psychology in 2002.

Interest in positive psychology has remained high ever since. In 2018, a quarter of the undergraduate students at Yale University enrolled in a course devoted to the subject of happiness. In 2019, 1,600 individuals attended the World Congress of Positive Psychology and research in the field has generated tens of thousands of academic papers.

Psychologist Christopher Peterson pointed out that positive psychology is meant to serve as an extension of the areas of psychology that focus on mental illness and human weakness. Positive psychologists don't wish to replace or abandon the study of human problems, they simply wish to add the study of what’s good in life to the field.

【1】What should positive psychology focus on according to Seligman?

    A.Solving human problems.

    B.Treating bad emotions.

    C.Healing mental illnesses.

    D.Helping develop good things.

【2】What made positive psychology become popular?

    A.Seligman’s effort in spreading it.

    B.International conferences’ being held.

    C.Attention from the media.

    D.Further research in this field.

【3】What is Christopher Peterson’s attitude toward positive psychology?

    A.Ambiguous.

    B.Doubtful.

    C.Objective.

    D.Critical.

【4】What can be the best title for the text?

    A.The Limitation of Positive Psychology

    B.Seligman, Father of Positive Psychology

C.Psychology: Past, Present and Possible Future

D.Positive Psychology: A New Subfield of Psychology

  • 24、Society looks down on people who collect the wastes of others, but what they don’t realize is that they could get more money in one day than what they get in one week working at their daily job from selling other people’s unwanted goods.

I am no “make-money-quick guru” but I have made a couple thousand dollars from selling what others throw out to the garbage. As the saying goes: “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.”

You don’t have to start a business. You could simply sell second-hand things people give away and profit from it. In my high school days, I had my first experience selling an old pre-loved Logitech keyboard to a buyer on Gumtree.com.au for $50. I remember how exciting it was for me to make money from something I no longer needed. I technically made a $50 profit in less than an hour.

How to make $1,000 with $0 in a day?

Go on platforms such as Facebook market or Gumtree and find things people are giving away for free in your local area, then sell them. I found an abundance of household items like cupboards, shelves, mirror cabinet, and chairs that sell very well. Don’t worry what people think of you, remember that you could get a few hundred for those.

Reinvest your money and buy something with a higher value that someone might be happy to get rid of, and sell that for a profit of $600, etc. Your action is not just about making money, but also seeing it as using the earth’s resources efficiently and not wasting them in the trash.

If there is one thing I learned from this practice, it is that: there is always someone out there who considers one man’s trash as treasure, no matter what the item is.

    【1】What may a “make-money-quick guru” do in paragraph 2?

A.A person who works in a company.

B.A person who throws unwanted things.

C.A person who teaches people how to make great profit.

D.A person who makes money by selling second-hand things.

【2】How did the writer start his business?

    A.By collecting others’ trash.

    B.By selling his old things.

    C.By buying valuable things.

    D.By giving away useless things.

【3】Why did the writer suggest others buy more valuable things?

A.To collect them for later use.

B.To sell them and get a higher profit.

    C.To learn from the practice.

D.To get rid of the unwanted things.

【4】Which of the following could be the best title for the text?

    A.Sell Unwanted Things

B.Make Money in a New Business

    C.Live an Environmentally Friendly Life

    D.One Person’s Trash, Another Person’s Cash
