二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Finally, I entered the university. Because of my careful savings, I did not have to work during the school year. Then, summer came and it was time to work harder than ever. I continued working as a waitress at night, instructed tennis camps several mornings a week and worked as a secretary for a few hours in the afternoons. I even decided to take a class at a community (社区) college. This class at the community college saved me $650. It was an extremely tiring summer and made me anxious to return to my relatively easy life at the university.

During my second and third years of undergraduate schooling, I decided to work about five hours per week in the campus (校园) admissions office answering phones. This provided a little spending money and kept me from drawing my savings out. I wanted to go to Israel to study for 3 weeks, but I hesitated in making this decision because it would cost me $1,600 more to get the credits in Israel. About two weeks later my Mom called to tell me that I had $1,600 in the bank that I had forgotten about! One of my concerns about this trip was not only the cost, but the loss of time to make money; however, I made as much that summer in the ten weeks when I was at home as I had made during the fourteen weeks when I was at home the summer before. The way everything worked together to make this trip possible was one of the most exciting things that have ever happened to me.

This experience has shaped me in many important ways. The first thing that I learned was the importance of a strong work ethic (伦理). Working long hours did a lot to develop my character and helped me learn the value of a dollar. It also made me learn how to search for creative ways to settle difficult situations.

【1】Where did the writer probably work part-time before attending the university?

    A. In a restaurant.

    B. In the tennis camps.

    C. In a company.

    D. In the admissions office.

【2】The writer took a class at a community college mainly because _________.

    A. she wanted to save money

    B. life there was relatively easy

    C. summer time was tiring

    D. it was required by the university

【3】The writer’s major concern about the trip to Israel was that _________.

    A. her mother would not agree

    B. she would fail to get credits in Israel

    C. a well-paid summer job would be lost

    D. $1,600 couldn’t be drawn out in time

【4The passage is mainly about how the writer _________.

    A. made money on the college campus

    B. managed to make full use of her vacation

    C. was forced to support herself by her mother

    D. was shaped by working part-time through college

  • 22、   On a trip to India in 2012, Anirudh Sharma took a photo of a diesel generator (柴油发电机) blowing black soot (烟灰) against a white wall. That dark stain made Sharma, who was then a student in the Media Lab of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), think seriously about pollution—and also about coloring matters, like ink.

The black ink we use in our pens or in inkjet printers is essentially from soot. The technical term for the substance is “carbon black”, and it is the powder that remains after burning coal or oil. The powder is mixed with other chemicals to turn it into smooth, flowing black ink.

“So, if you can do it with soot, can we do the same with air pollution?” Sharma explains. “The black ink in the pen you use is made by burning fossil fuels. But you shouldn’t need to burn new fossil fuels just to make ink. Fossil fuels are already being burned.” If he could find a way, he thought, to catch the soot that produced that stain on the wall in his photograph, he could not only reduce the amount of pollution released into the air, but also turn it into something new, or perhaps something beautiful.

In 2014, following the completion of his Master’s degree at MIT, Sharma returned to India to focus fully on developing what would become a product called AIR-INK, the first commercial ink made entirely from air pollution. He and his team built a lab in a small garage in Bangalore to create a device that could catch air pollution at the source, in engines or factory machinery.

They first developed a filtering device called Kaalink that consisted of a steel container that could be attached to an exhaust pipe. Now Kaalink can filter air pollution from almost any source, and turn it into soot, which is then processed to form ink that can be used in AIR-INK pens and markers. Each marker holds about 30 milliliters of AIR-INK, which is equal to approximately 45 minutes of diesel car pollution.

The inventor would like AIR-INK to have practical applications, like in inkjet printers in offices, newsprint, or textbooks. “We’ve set up industries for our comfort, but the environment has to bear the price of it.” Sharma explains, adding that AIR-INK isn’t a complete solution to the world’s pollution problem. “It’s a start, and it can inspire several others to start looking at new forms of waste that are lying outside, unused.”

1What inspired Sharma to make ink out of air pollution?

A.A photo he took in India. B.The lack of ink in his studies.

C.The serious pollution in the U.S.. D.His experiments in the laboratory.

2What do we know about “carbon black”?

A.It is a useful kind of fuel. B.It is the main air pollutant.

C.It is the key component of ink. D.It is usually in the form of a liquid.

3Which of the following is the correct order to make AIR-INK?

    A.Soot→exhaust pipe→Kaalink→AIR-INK B.Soot→Kaalink→exhaust pipe→AIR-INK

    C.Air pollutants→soot→Kaalink→AIR-INK D.Air pollutants→Kaalink→soot→AIR-INK

4What can we infer about Sharma’s invention?

A.It needs more tests. B.It is costly but practical.

C.It helps raise environmental awareness. D.It has gained the admiration of other inventors.

  • 23、If you are finding it tough to land a job, try expanding your job-hunting plan to include the following strategies:

    Set your target

While you should always keep your opinions open to compromise (妥协), you should also be sure to target exactly what you want in a job. A specific job hunt will be more efficient than a random one.

    Schedule abundant interviews

Use every possible method to get interviews-answering ads, using search firms, contacting companies directly, surfing the Web, and networking. Even if a job is not perfect for you, every interview can make you learn from it.

    Follow up

Even if someone does not hire you, write them a thank-you note for the interview. Then. some weeks later, send another brief letter to explain that you still have not found the perfect position and that you will be available to interview again if the original position you applied for-or any other position, for that matter-is open. Do this with every position you interview for, and you may just catch a break.

    Make it your full-time job

You can’t find a job by looking infrequently. You have to make time for it. If you’re unemployed and looking for a job, devote as much time as you would to a full-time job. If you have a job while you’re looking, figure out an organized schedule to maximize your searching time.

    Network vertically

In the research phase of your job hunt, talk to people who are on a level above you in your desired industry. They’ll have some insights that people at your own level won’t have, and will be in a good position to hire you or recommend you to be hired.

    Keep your spirits up

Looking for a job is one of the toughest things you will ever have to do. Maintain your confidence, stay persistent, and think positively, and eventually you will get a job that suits you.

【1】According to the author, your job-hunting plan had better be as_____ as possible.

    A.random

    B.clear

    C.fixed

    D.complex

A.companies that have vacant posts available

    B.companies that supply website-search service

    C.companies that provide job-hunting service

D.companies that study job market and employment rate

【3】When hunting a job, you’d better communicate with people on a level above you because________.

    A.they will hire you soon

B.they will ask someone to hire you

C.you will benefit from their fame

    D.you can learn from them

【4】As indicated in the passage, in order to get a suitable job, you should _______.

  • 24、New research shows that the healthy brain may hold memories which we don’t even remember. In The Journal of Neuroscience, experts report that the brain might hold more memories than people realize, but that restoring those memories can be tricky.

    Memory Check

First, participants saw a list of 120 real words mixed with 80 nonsense words. Next, they saw another word list and tried to remember which words had been on the first list. Meanwhile, their brains were scanned with functional magnetic resonance(核磁共振) imaging.

While participants reviewed the second word list, their brain scans showed more activity in a certain brain area -- the posterior(后部的) median temporal lobe(脑叶) -- when they saw words that had been on the first word list.

But participants didn’t always remember that they’d seen those words before. Sometimes, theygoofedand said they hadn’t seen those words before. In other words, the posterior median temporal lobe was more sensitive to memory than participants’ consciousness, the researchers note.

    “Album”of Memories

Another part of the median temporal lobe also attracted the scientists’ attention. The anterior(前面的)median temporal lobe showed more activity when participants thought they were seeing a new word, the study shows.

So, why did participants sometimes mess up their memory recall? It might be that two parts of their brain -- the posterior and anterior median temporal lobes -- might be dueling(决斗) for the upper hand in deciding what actually happened in the past, the study notes.

In other words, memories might have a photo album in the brain, but sometimes we forget what’s on all of the photo album’s pages.

1A person sometimes has difficulty recalling because   .

    A. he is unconscious when he gets his memories

    B. he forgets what is on the pages of the photo album

    C. there are two parts in his brain dueling for the upper advantage

    D. the anterior median temporal lobe is more active than the posterior

2According to the passage the researchers are   .

    A. studying how a person remembers things

    B. studying a magazine The Journal of Neuroscience

    C. examining posterior and anterior median temporal lobes

    D. doing experiments to find out what disturbs a person’s memory

3What did the experts discover when the participants saw the words on the first word list appear on the second word list?

    A. The instrument worked faster.

    B. The participants were more conscious.

    C. The posterior median temporal lobe was more active.

    D. The anterior median temporal lobe was more active.

4The underlined word“goofed”in the fourth paragraph means   .

    A. made a mess of   B. made an answer for

    C. made out of   D. made the best of
