二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Have you ever felt as if the entire world was watching while you made a mistake? Well here’s some good news: it’s likely that no one even notice.

The spotlight effect is a trick of the mind that makes us believe that people notice us more often than they really do. We experience the spotlight effect not only when we make mistakes but also when we perform well, such as making a mistake in a game, giving a terrible answer in class, scoring a big goal or doing a good deed. In these moments, it feels like everyone is watching.

The spotlight effect exists because we all get used to seeing things through our own eyes. Every person is the main character in his or her story, and the events of our lives seem to have great importance. We are so busy examining ourselves that we actually observe very little about everyone around us.

The spotlight effect is a very common part of the human experience. However, in some cases, it can lead to extreme social anxiety and nervousness around other people.

Everyone suffers some degree of social anxiety. We all care about what others think, and we all want to be liked. It’s normal to wonder about what effect we have on other people.

However, this can be a problem when the anxiety is too much to handle. If someone is so nervous that they can’t make good decisions then it’s time to take action and improve the situation.

Learning about the spotlight effect is important because it can help us reduce our anxiety. The next time you feel like everyone is staring at you, remind yourself that it’s just your mind playing tricks on you. Another good exercise is to make an effort to notice the people around you, rather than focusing on yourself. If you fill your mind with thoughts of your friends and family, it will help you be less self-conscious.

    【1】What is the spotlight effect?

A.It feels like all eyes are on us.

B.We enjoy more focus from others.

C.It’s probably (hat no one notices us.

D.It is a trick lo make us perform well.

【2】How do we usually feel when the spotlight effect occurs?

    A.Proud.

    B.Anxious.

    C.Relaxed.

    D.Depressed.

【3】Which of the following is true about the spotlight effect?

A.It makes people feel more confident in scoring a big goal.

B.It may be an unusual human experience about social anxiety.

C.It happens only when we make some mistakes in great events.

D.It exists when we care too much about what others think of us.

【4】Why should we learn about the spotlight effect?

    A.To release our mental burden.

B.To help us take more exercise.

    C.To make us more self-conscious.

D.To help us pay more attention in class.

  • 22、   The cicada(蝉)has an interesting life cycle, but most of us only become aware of these insects in summer when they reach adulthood and begin their calls. 1Some, like the Golden Emperor, have complicated songs. The summertime calls of the cicada are made by adult males to attract females. Their eggs are usually laid in scratches cut through the skin of the tree. Once it has been completed, the adults die.

When the eggs hatch, the larvae(幼虫)drop to the ground and live under the soil.2They spend as little as several months for some species or as long as several years for other species buried under ground, shedding(蜕下)their skin as they grow. They shed their skin for the last time to become adult cicadas with their wings. 3 A few days after coming out of the soil, the males call for mates and cycle begins again.

The Golden Emperor, whose call is quite different from others, is one of Australia's biggest and prettiest cicadas. 4 The Golden Emperor calls in groups, but getting to see one up close is very difficult as they fly away when approached. Also, as their breeding season progresses, they gradually move higher up the tree trunks.5 The Golden Emperor is a delight just to listen to if you can't see the insect itself.

A.Not all cicadas have simple, loud noise.

B.This act makes their calls the only sign that they are still around.

C.The larvae attach themselves to tree roots and feed on their liquid.

D.When they have become mature, they come out of the soil as a group.

E.Their songs call on female to fly to them and fight for next generation.

F.If that happens, they will fly away and go to some place that they really love.

G.Their call starts with two notes and then rises sharply before it suddenly drops down.

  • 23、It’s so difficult to follow the ups and downs of a 2-year-old. One moment he’s beaming and friendly; the next he’s sullen(愠怒的)and weepy, often for no apparent reason. These mood swings, however, are just part of growing up. They are signs of the emotional changes taking place as your child struggles to take control of actions, impulses, feelings and his body.

At this age, your child wants to explore the world and seek adventure. As a result, he’ll spend most of his time testing limits, his own, yours and his environments. Unfortunately, he still lacks many of the skills required for the safe accomplishment of everything he needs to do, and he often will need you to protect him.

When he oversteps a limit and is pulled back, he often reacts with anger and frustration, possibly with a temper tantrum (发脾气). He may even strike back by hitting, biting and kicking. At this age, he doesn’t have much control over his emotional impulse (冲动). So his anger and frustration tend to erupt suddenly in the form of crying, hitting or screaming. It’s his only way of dealing with the difficult realities of life. He may even act out in ways that unintentionally harm himself or others. It’s all part of being 2.

It’s not uncommon for toddlers to be angels when you’re not around, because they don’t trust people enough to test their limits. But with you, your toddler will be willing to try things that may be dangerous or difficult, because he knows you’ll rescue him if he gets into trouble.

Whatever protest pattern he has developed around the end of his first year will probably persist for some time. For instance, when you’re about to leave him with a sitter, he may become angry and throw a tantrum in anticipation (预想) of the separation. Or he may cry and cling to you. Or he could simply become subdued and silent. Whatever his behavior, try not to overreact by scolding or punishing him. The best tactic(策略) is to reassure him before you leave that you will be back and, when you return, to praise him for being so patient while you are gone. Take comfort in the fact that separations should be much easier by the time he’s 3 years old.

    【1】The “ups and downs” (Para. 1) of a 2-year-old refers to ________.

    A. his falling down and standing up

    B. his successes and failures in doing things

    C. his good and bad traits

    D. his mood swings

【2】A 2-year-old still lacks all of the following EXCEPT _____________.

    A. signs that express his emotional changes

    B. skills necessary for accomplishing certain things

    C. control over his emotional impulses

    D. good methods of dealing with the difficult realities of life

【3】Which of the following is true?

    A. A 2-year-old doesn’t know how to express his anger and frustration.

    B. A 2-year-old often intentionally harms himself or others.

    C. A 2-year-old depends on his parents to do everything new and challenging.

    D. A 2-year-old trusts his parents more than other people

【4】When a mother is about to separate with her baby, she’d better __________.

    A. leave without the baby’s knowledge

    B. make the baby subdued and silent

    C. comfort the baby that she’ll be back soon

    D. ignore the baby’s reactions

  • 24、Never Let Me Go is a novel by British author Sir Kazuo Ishiguro. It combines science fiction, horror, and coming-of-age elements in a beautiful but cruel story, which deals with the power of friendship, the pains of growing up, and self-sacrifice in the face of a cruel situation.

The book centers on Tommy, Ruth, and Kathy, who tells the story. It describes their childhood at a strange boarding school called Hailsham House, where the children all have excellent medical care but a very low quality of life. The students and teachers also act very strangely. A frightening reality is revealed: The students are all “donors”—clones of other people—who were created to donate their organs once they grow up.

The novel Never Let Me Go is not the only one by Sir Kazuo Ishiguro. He has also written six other novels, a number of short stories, four screenplays, and a handful of song lyrics. His moving words are highly regarded by both readers and critics. He has been nominated (提名) for the well-known Man Booker Prize four times, and he won in 1989 with his novel, The Remains of the Day. In 2017, he won the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Though Ishiguro has written screenplays, he was not the one who adapted Never Let Me Go into a film. The film version was released in 2010 and still stayed true to the novel. Carey Mulligan, Keira Knightley, and Andrew Garfield played Kathy, Ruth, and Tommy. I was on the whole a success with critics and was well-liked at film festivals around the world. The movie version, however, could not live up to the book in the end. Although audiences generally praised the movie and the actors’ performances, the film version did not reach the same level of success as the novel.

【1】What makes the boarding school strange?

    A.It is at a non-profit.

    B.It serves an immoral purpose.

    C.The students have physical problems.

D.The students are all from poor families.

【2】What can we know about the film version of Never Let Me Go?

    A.It differed from the novel.

B.It was a screenplay adapted by Ishiguro.

C.It got much praise from the audience.

D.It was more successful than the novel itself.

【3】Which of the following best describes Ishiguro as a writer?

    A.Humorous.

    B.Ambitious.

    C.Active.

    D.Productive.

    【4】What style is the text?

    A.A news report.

    B.A book review.

    C.A children’s story.

    D.A diary entry.

  • 25、   For students chasing lasting wealth, the best choice of a college major is less obvious than you might think.

The conventional wisdom is that computer science and engineering majors have better employment ______ and higher earnings than their peers who choose liberal arts.

This is true for the first job, but the long-term story is more ______. The advantage for STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) majors ______ steadily after their first jobs, and by age 40, the earnings of people who majored in fields like social science or history have reached the same level.

This happens for two reasons. First, many of the latest technical skills that are in high ______ today become out-dated when technology progresses. Older workers must learn these new skills on the fly, ______ younger workers may have learned them in school. Skill undesirability and the increased ______ from younger graduates work together to lower the earnings advantage for STEM degree-holders as they age.

Second, although liberal arts majors start low, they ______ catch up to their peers in STEM fields. This is by design. A liberal arts education ______ valuable "soft skills" like problem-solving, critical thinking and adaptability. Such skills are hard to quantify, and they don't create clear ______ to high-paying first jobs. But they have ______ in a wide variety of careers in the long run.

According to the Census Bureau's American Community Survey, computer science and engineering majors between the ages of 23 and 25 earned 37% higher than the average starting salary of those majoring in history or social sciences. ______, the average salary of those majoring in computer science or engineering by age 40 was $111,870, and social science and history majors earned $131,154, an average that is ______ in part, by high-paying jobs in management, business and law.

Why did that happen? According to a 2018 survey, the three ______ of college graduates that employers considered most important were written communication, problem-solving and the ability to work in a team. In the liberal arts tradition, these skills are built through the ______ between instructors and students, and through close reading and analysis of a broad range of subjects and texts.

I'm not suggesting that students should avoid majoring in STEM fields, but I do think we should be careful of the urge to make college curricula ever more ______ and career-focused. A four-year college degree should prepare students for the next 40 years of working life, and for a future that none of us can imagine.

    Braving the Waters

Joel Boyers and his wife Melody Among were heading home from the Nashville airport. Among had just earned her helicopter pilot’s licence when Boyers received a call from a stranger. The caller told him that her brother and his two daughters were trapped on their roof in Waverly, 60 miles from Nashville. They were surrounded by rising floodwaters caused by the heaviest rainfall that year.

Desperate, the caller begged, “Could you please, please rescue my loved ones?”

Boyers, 41, looked at the address the caller mentioned while glancing at the storm clouds. “Ma’am,” he said, “no one will fly in this weather ...” But even before he finished the sentence, Boyers knew they would go back up. “I’ve got a daughter myself,” Boyers says. “I’ll see what I can do.” He put the brother’s address into his phone and they drove back to the airport.

Before long they were in the air, unprepared for what they were about to see. It was nothing but raging water below them. There were two houses on fire. Cars in trees. Tons of debris (残骸). No one was going to be able to swim in that.

The flooding also took out cell phone service, meaning that Boyers couldn’t use his phone to pinpoint (精确定位) the house he was looking for. He flew on regardless.

As Boyers controlled the helicopter, Among began searching for people caught out on rooftops, bridges — anywhere they could land and get them on board. Suddenly, she saw a teenager trapped in a tree. The teen, soaking wet and exhausted, was barely out of the water. Since there was no place to land, Boyers lowered the helicopter until it approached to just above the water line. Among jumped out and swam to the tree, where she helped the teen into the helicopter. The teen was shaking and looking behind anxiously when she said, “Thank you so much, but my sister and uncle ... please help them ...”

Boyers dropped off the teen on a patch of land across the street. Then he and Among were back in the air.
