二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、I had a teacher who used to wake up in class by shouting: “The early bird gets the worm!” I say “let him have the worm”. I hate food that doesn’t stay still, and avoid Japanese restaurants for that very reason. Anyway, I stopped eating worms at the age of three, switching to regular breakfasts of cereal(谷物), to which I would add extra sugar.

Recently I was thinking about early birds and the competitive spirit after receiving a letter from a reader in Malaysia: ”My son deliberately throws away marks because he doesn’t like to be top of the class. What shall I do?” Give him a round of “applause” for being smart! Actually many children in Asia tend to be the focus by performing better.

Placed into a very competitive class when I was 11, I quickly learned the ideal position was second to last. The top three performers and the very last person are highlighted; the second-to-last contestant is INVISIBLE. And it’s an easy position to get—just deliberately underperform at every test. I could do that. I once came second to last in eight straight sports day races. No one suspected anything. I was so invisible that I could have robbed a bank in my street and no one would have noticed.

At the London Olympics a few months ago, badminton pairs from three Asian countries deliberately tried to lost matches to draw good lots in later rounds. It was funny to watch, but they were all thrown out for poor sportsmanship. What they really needed were acting lessons, their moves were so unconvincing. “Oops, I hit the ball in entirely the wrong direction.”

The other day, I took the children out and they raced for the car. “I’m first,” said one. The second said: “First is worst, second is best.” Together they sang at the last one: “And third’s the one with a hairy chest.”

It struck me that the organizers of sports matches could use this song when people deliberately lost matches. “I lost,” the delighted loser will say. The judges could still declare them winners, pointing to a new, optional regulation: “First is worst, second is best, third’s the one with a hairy chest.”

【1】Why did the author dislike Japanese restaurant?

    A.Its food was served raw.

    B.Its food contained worms.

    C.He was tempted by cereal.

D.He was affected by the saying.

【2】How did the author manage to be invisible in a competitive class?

A.He highlighted the top three students.

B.He came to second in sports races.

C.He hid himself in a bank skillfully.

    D.He intentionally underperformed.

【3】What can be learned from the passage?

A.The judge is encouraged to eliminate the dishonest players.

B.Players disqualified from Olympic doubles for using drugs.

C.Children’s song praises the dramatic acting skills of athletes.

D.players purposefully failed for easier lots in the following rounds.

【4】Which saying might the author possibly support?

    A.Great minds think alike.

B.God favors those who are prepared.

    C.Honesty is the best policy.

D.A bird in hand is worth two in the bush

  • 22、During the "golden week" national holiday that began on October 1st, hundreds of thousands of sightseers flocked to Lijiang, a picturesque historic town in the south-western province of Yunnan. Among its attractions are the symbols printed beneath the Chinese characters on road signs and shop fronts (Starbucks included). They are Dongba pictographs, an ancient form of script(文字)that originated among the Naxi, a local ethnic group. It almost died until about a decade ago, when local officials began to realize its value and covered the town with it.

Dongba was never widely used by the Naxi, of whom there are about 300,000 living in the Himalayan foothills near Lijiang, as well as in Tibet and Sichuan province. The pictographs, which evolved as early as the seventh century, were developed by shamans (巫 师)of the Dongba faith, which has roots in Tibet.

Over 20,000 of these religious records survive. They provide rich insight into how Naxi people thought about war, geography, astronomy and agriculture. But they are extremely hard to read. Linguists are helped by the area's Dongba priests(神职人员). There are about 600, most of them very old, including Yang Guoxing, who ran a school from 2010 to 2015 to teach Dongba to children living in the mountains. When Mr Yang was growing up, “everyone was too busy farming” to learn it. Now they are all busy soaking up the pop culture, he says.

Signs at bus stations in rural Yunnan encourage locals to use written and spoken Chinese. But the Naxi get off lightly compared with other ethnic minorities. Primary schools in Lijiang teach the Dongba script twice a week, as well as Naxi nursery rhymes. Li Dejing, head of the Dongba Culture Research Institute, says this is not just about keeping alive the pictographs, but letting children grasp “the very spirit of their own culture”. And this will also help tourism to develop in Lijiang.

【1】What do we know about the Dongba script?

A.It is widely used by local people.

B.It was a tool used by certain people.

C.It was quite popular at certain periods.

D.It has a history of more than 3000 years.

【2】According to Yang Guoxing, what makes it difficult to spread the Dongba script?

    A.Only priests can read it.

    B.It's extremely hard to read.

C.Its value hasn't been fully recognized.

D.People are too busy to learn a new language.

【3】What has been done to keep the Dongba script alive?

A.New schools are opened to teach it.

B.Some tourists are invited to preserve it.

C.Only the Dongba script can be used in schools.

D.People are more exposed to this language than before.

【4】What is the best title of the text?

    A.The Dongba Script Is Dying

B.The History of the Dongba Script

C.The Dongba Script Survives in Lijiang

D.The Influence of the Dongba Script

  • 23、Five years after they disappeared, lost jewels belonging to the wife of a US ambassador to the Netherlands were found.

Dawn Arnall had already received an insurance payout for her loss. However, the misplaced gems had been found and held for safe keeping by a hotel she stayed in. staff were unaware that the jewels were worth $ 9m.

The world is full of forgetful people. A man in the English town of Reading even left a sausage casserole in a bus. The dish ended up in the Lost Property Office until it was recovered by his mother, eager for her dinner.

A walker in the Lake District had his food in his mouth but what about his teeth? After climbing a hill in 2007, David Packer stopped for a chocolate bar. He took his false teeth out, wrapped them up in a tissue and just forgot about them. It took more than a year for the walker to be reunited with them.

Over the past 78 years passengers on Londons transport network have left behind items including human skulls and gas masks from World War II. Since 1934, staff have handled an average of 200 000 items a year. Recently they have used computers to try to track down their owners.

But if you find something and cant locate the rightful owner, is it finders keepers? It depends on whats found and how, says John Spencer, professor of law at the University of Cambridge.

If you pick up a coin, you can keep it unless you saw someone drop it, as you wouldnt be able to find the owner by taking reasonable steps.

If its a larger sum, you should report it to the police but if the item has been abandoned, the property is yours. One mans loss is another mans gain!

  • 24、Record pressing companies are handling ongoing supply chain issues and accelerating demand for vinyl releases pushes long-playing sales to record highs.

According to the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), more than five million vinyl records were bought in 2021. It means that vinyl comprised 23% of all albums sold in the UK last year, the trade body (行业机构) says that vinyl is on course to beat CDs as the dominant physical medium of choice for music fans this year.

Some big-name releases in the latter half of the year are expected to push the sales even higher. The latest release from Harry Styles, Harry’s House, broke records in May has become the quickest-selling vinyl album in the US since 1991, selling 182,000 copies in its first week.

In the US, profits from the sale of vinyl albums grew by 61% in 2021, far outpacing growth rates for paid music and streaming services like Spotify, according to the Recording Industry Association of America. But in the wake of the revival (复兴) are some significant production problems. Dozens of record-pressing factories have been built to try to meet demand in North America — and it’s still not enough.

The industry “has found a new gear, and is accelerating at a new pace”, said Mark Michaels, boss of United Record Pressing, America’s largest record producer, in Nashville, Tennessee. There are now about 40 plants in the US – most of them smaller operations – but challenges remain. Where major record labels may have once pressed the records for their artists, now the manufacture of the discs is increasingly carried out by independent plants. Some, like Jack White’s Third Man Pressing, based in Detroit, are run by musicians themselves.

Backlogs (积压的工作) are preventing new releases, however, as the capacity of smaller firms to press new vinyl releases is held up by growing demand and supply chain failures. Shortages of raw materials melted and flattened into the actual records, have caused widespread problems. It is uneasy to launch a new plant because there are a handful of companies that make record-pressing machines. Those machines are backordered, as well.

In the UK, Press On Vinyl, have been established in recent years to meet increasing demand from acts of all sizes to have their tunes preserved in a physical format. The pressing plant adapts cutting-edge technology to make records with lower energy consumption, better quality control and a smaller chance of adding surface noise to the records than other manufacturing techniques.

But Danny Lowe, co-founder of the business along with David Todd, says: “Widespread problems along the supply chain are leaving record pressers at risk of being unable to meet the growing appetite for vinyl.” “Demand has grown from all quarters,” says Lowe, “whether from smaller independent artists who only order a run of 100 or so records, up to bigger acts who can take up the plant’s capacity for a while at a time.” “We’ve just added more machinery to our production line so that we have more available capacity.” he explains.
