二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、While lifeguards are expected to save swimmers in trouble, a special group of lifeguards recently saved 14 people who needed assistance. Only these rescuers had four legs instead of two and are part of Italy's lifeguard dogs.

The canine (警犬) lifeguards assisted in rescuing the group of 14 people—from three families—who were struggling with high waves and winds in Sperlonga, which is located halfway in-between Rome and Naples. The group, which included eight children, were trying to get back to shore after their boat turned over. When the people started calling for help, three dogs were nearby enough to aid along with the help of two-legged human lifeguards. Canine rescuers Eros, Mya and Mira, from an Italian rescue dog school, brought the people to shore in 15 minutes.

The school, which opened almost 30 years ago, accepts all types of dogs as long as they weigh 30 kg. But the type that seems to be the most suited to the job are Newfoundland's. Each dog has to be able to pull a boat of 30 people between 300 to 2, 000 meters. The training takes at least a year and there are currently approximately 400 trained rescue dogs in Italy. Once licensed, the owners of the dogs, volunteer their time on the beaches.

The dog and owner work as a team and use the dolphin system when swimming to a rescue. The handler holds on to the dogs’ harness (挽具) in the water and is able to save energy to use in the rescue without being exhausted from the swim. Besides being lifeguards, graduates of the school cooperate with Italian helicopter rescue teams including: air rescue, police, customs, and fire services. These hardworking dogs are trained to jump out of helicopters and to go straight to work.

“The dogs assist our operations during the summer months,” Fabio Moro told ABC. “Rescue dogs help us keep these areas under control.”

These canine heroes do more than just doggy paddle (狗爬式). They do real lifesaving work and they deserve their weight in kibble, treats, and love.

【1】What happened when 14 people sought help?

    A.Three families were swimming.

B.Three dogs came to their rescue.

    C.Human lifeguards hesitated to help.

D.The canines were being trained there.

【2】What is a must for a dog to become a lifeguard?

A.Weighing 30 kilograms at the least.

    B.Swimming faster than people.

    C.Being able to pull a 200-meter boat.

    D.Belonging to Newfoundland family.

【3】What can we learn from the fourth paragraph?

A.The handler keeps training in the water.

B.Dolphins play a key role in training dogs.

C.Rescue dogs must be trained with the police.

D.Canine lifeguards are capable of many tasks.

【4】Why does the author mention Fabio Moro's words?

A.To emphasize he participated in rescue.

B.To remind people of the danger of swimming.

C.To show he thought well of lifeguard dogs.

D.To appeal to training more lifeguard dogs.

  • 22、Nyalowala’s parents are disappointed. Their son took a boat from their riverside village to the city of Mbandaka, in the heart of the Congo Basin rainforest, where he attended a teacher-training college. They wanted him to become a crocodile (鳄鱼) hunter, like his father and most of his ancestors. “There is a lot of pressure,” says Nyalowala. Hunting for bush meat is popular—and may pay better than teaching.

However, it harms wildlife in the rainforest, which covers six countries and is second in size only to the Amazon. Around 6 million tons of bush meat are thought to come out of the Congo Basin each year. The number of animals killed for the pot has been increasing. More hunters are selling their prey (猎物) in markets, instead of eating it themselves. The trade has emptied out parts of the forest; 39% of it is at severe risk of over-hunting. Everything from bonobos, an endangered species of ape, to antelopes and, occasionally, elephants, appear at market in Mbandaka.

Over-hunting has made life more dangerous for crocodile hunters. The number of dwarf crocodiles, once common in the Congo River, is shrinking. So hunters have to chase the ferocious Nile crocodile instead. Their scaly bodies measure up to six meters and they often kill humans. Hunters in small boats go after them at night, shining a torch while striking the water. “The crocodile does not like that,” says Nyalowala. “He begins to twist and then comes to attack.” As the animal attacks so do its pursuers, spearing it. A live crocodile fetches more than a dead one in the markets in Mbandaka, so hunters tie their jaws and transport them some 200 km downstream. They sell for around $150 each.

A teacher at a state school, by comparison, earns around $170 a month, though many did not get paid at all last year. No wonder Nyalowala’s parents wanted him to follow in his father’s footsteps.

    【1】Why are Nyalowala’s parents disappointed?

    A.He was under pressure.

    B.He abandoned his home.

    C.He went against their will.

    D.He disrespected his ancestors.

【2】What causes the popularity of hunting for bush meat?

    A.Wild animals are endangered.

    B.Bush meat trade is expanding.

    C.Hunters’number is increasing.

    D.Old tradition makes a comeback.

【3】What does the underlined word “ferocious” in paragraph 3 probably mean?

    A.Violent.

    B.Rare.

    C.Expensive.

    D.Attractive.

【4】What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.Parents care about their child’s future.

    B.Financial benefits affect career choice.

    C.Children should follow parents’ advice.

D.Teachers’ work is unimportant in Africa.

  • 23、   The unforgettable characters are often the ones that we can identify with.

Chibi Maruko-chan(樱桃小丸子),the main character from the Japanese anime series of the same name, is one of them. Maruko-chan is a primary school girl who often makes mistakes and puts herself in difficult situations. Yet, for those who were born in the 1980s and 1990s,Chibi Maruko-chan helped them to feel better about themselves as a kid.

But as these young people grew up,Maruko-chan, did not. Last month, however, Momoko Sakura, the creator of the popular cartoon series, passed away at the age of 53.

“I feel so sad about her death, which came too early," wrote Soichi Aida, editor-in-chief of Ribbon magazine, which first published Chibi Maruko-chan in 1986. “But the bright smiles of Maruko-chan and her friends will keep shining in the minds of readers."

Unlike many popular characters, Maruko-chan isn't pretty, nor does she have any kind of special ability. In fact, she's lazy and hates to do chores. But this is what makes her so popular among so many people, young and old. "Maruko is not perfect and owns all the qualities of a 9-year-old girl -she's naughty, funny, and occasionally depressed. She is afraid of exams and leaves her homework until the last day of the holiday,"reported Chinese website Huxiu.com.

Later,as Maruko-chan gradually learns the ways of the world, she comes across a lot of problems, but her intelligence helps her out.The carefree girl is known for her funny yet wise sayings, such as,"Leave happiness to the last in a bittersweet life,"and Self-reliance is the secret to consistent happiness."

Maruko-chan's facial expressions are also what stay in viewers' minds. Whenever she feels awkward, lines suddenly appear on her face, or sometimes an unexpected gust of wind will blow above her head. These expressions show her real feelings when she's in an uncomfortable environment, which most young people can relate to.

Though Maruko-chan has always been a grade-three student, her idea of being true to herself teaches us a lot.Her creator may be gone, but Maruko-chan's spirit and attitude will live on for many more years.

1What is Chibi Maruko-chan known for?

    A.Her good looks and laziness.

    B.Her intelligence and occasional depression.

A.Because she is perfect in every way.

B.Because she contributes to our emojis.

C.Because she mirrors what little girls really are.

D.Because she has some special abilities to make people laugh.

4What can we infer from this passage?

A.Chibi Maruko-chan teaches us a lot about life.

B.Chibi Maruko-chan dies at the end of the cartoon series.

C.Chibi Maruko-chan is the most famous anime series in Japan.

D.Chibi Maruko-chan is far better known in China than in Japan.

  • 24、For many years, scientists and animal lovers have worked to make the world safer for endangered species. Now, there is something that needs protection from these protected animals — a famous French cheese called Roquefort, known as the “King of Cheeses”.

Roquefort is made from sheep’s milk in the southern part of the French mountains. Farmers have been making Roquefort for thousands of years, and they follow many rules when making it, to be sure that it is done in the traditional way. One of the rules is that they must let their sheep live freely in the mountains.

However, following these rules has become very dangerous. Wolves have moved into the area, and they have killed 62 sheep. The wolves are an endangered species, and have not been seen in the French mountains since the 1920s. No one is allowed to kill the wolves, but the farmers are now saying it is impossible for their sheep to live in the same mountains as the wolves. Farmers have dogs to protect the sheep and have also built electric fences, but they say they will not have enough money to continue making Roquefort once they have spent it all on keeping their sheep safe. Many people have said that wolves that attack sheep should be killed, since they have become a threat to the farmers’ jobs. Others think that anyone who wants the wolves killed is trying to make them become extinct.

Maybe it would not be a problem if Roquefort became extinct instead, and the wolves were able to live in the mountains. But then the farmers would not have jobs. Will the people of Southern France be able to find a way that protects both the wolves and the King of Cheeses? Let’s wait and see.
