二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、According to scientists, a study of more than 50 plants and animals suggests their ability to adapt to changes in rainfall and temperature will be vastly outpaced by future climate change.

Amphibians, reptiles and plants are harmed more easily in particular, according to US researchers. And tropical (热带的) species are at higher risk than those in temperate zones. Some animals might be able to move geographically to deal with rising temperatures, but others live in remote areas where they cannot move, such as in nature reserves or on mountains or islands.

Ecologists analyzed how quickly species had changed their climatic niches (the conditions where they can survive) over time, and how these rates compared with that of global warming. They analyzed populations of plants and animals, including insects, amphibians, birds, mammals and reptiles. Rates of change in climatic niches were much slower than rates of projected climate change, by more than 200,000 fold for temperature on average, they said.

“Overall, our results show that rates of climatic niche change among populations of plants and animals are remarkably slower than projected rates of future climate change,” said Tereza Jezkova and John Wiens, of the University of Arizona.

Mammals might be better placed to survive than amphibians and reptiles, because they had the ability to regulate their own body temperatures, said Dr. Wiens. Besides, while some species might be able to move to higher latitudes (纬度) to survive, “for a lot of organisms, that is not an option.” “It’s a double danger of climate change and habitat destruction,” he added.

1What species are likely to suffer most?

    A. Mammals in temperate regions.

    B. Reptiles in temperate regions.

    C. Mammals in tropics.

    D. Amphibians in tropics.

2What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 5 refer to?

    A. Amphibians.   B. Mammals.

    C. Reptiles.   D. Plants.

3What’s the main idea of the passage?

    A. Human beings should find some ways to fight against climate change.

    B. Many species will be unable to adapt fast enough to survive climate change.

    C. Climate change will cause great damage.

    D. Climate change is increasingly terrible.

  • 22、One morning a few years ago, at home in the Mänoa Valley on Oahu, scientist Kimberly Carlson looked out of the window and saw a rainbow so bright and clear that it took her breath away. That wasn’t a shocker: Hawaii is possibly the best place in the world to see rainbows today, and Manoa has particularly ideal conditions for clear bows: frequent rain showers and sunlight. But Carlson, now an environmental science professor now at New York University, realized she didn’t know the answer to a simple question: Would climate change affect Hawaii’s and the whole planet’s breathtaking rainbows? She shared the question with some climate scientist colleagues, and it interested them so much that they enlisted a class full of students to investigate.

Rainbows are not special because their basic ingredients are common and governed by relatively straightforward physics. “The basic recipe for seeing any part of the natural rainbow,” says Lee, “is sunlit rain.”

In November, they published their findings. “Climate change is affecting rainbows—now we know that’s true,” says Carlson, the lead author on the paper, which used computer models to simulate future rainbow-ready conditions. As major weather patterns change because of climate change, many parts of the world-particularly places nearer to the poles, like Alaska or Siberia, will get more rain—potentially adding dozens more rainbow-rich days by the end of the century.

The changes follow broader patterns of climate change; in fact, the shifts highlight some of the biggest risks and dangers. The increases in the Arctic, for example, are likely to play out because water that used to fall from the sky as snow will more often drop down as rain in a hotter future. And today’s rainbow-rich Amazon is predicted to suffer more frequently drought—both because the forest, which currently creates it sown rain, will lose that superpower as it shrinks, and because planet-wide climate change is shifting and changing the major weather patterns that cause tropical rainfall.

【1】Why does the author mention Carlson’s experience in paragraph 1?

    A.To explain a rule.

    B.To introduce a topic.

    C.To present a fact.

    D.To make a prediction.

【2】What is the most important reason of seeing a natural rainbow?

    A.Frequent sunlight.

    B.Frequent rain showers.

    C.The sunlit rain.

    D.The geographic position.

【3】What is paragraph 3 mainly about?

    A.Climate change causes more rainbows.

B.More rainbows worsen the climate condition.

C.There will be less rainbows in Siberia.

D.The temperature will be lower in Alaska.

【4】What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A.There may be more snow than rain in the Arctic.

B.Rainbows will be on the increase always.

C.Increase of rainbows is a natural phenomenon.

D.Amazon may suffer from drought more frequently.

  • 23、 My friend had mentioned the other day that her father had a lot of children's toys he was looking to give away. She knew I have a three-year-old daughter so she thought of me first. I told her I would love it if I could get some nice things for my daughter, which I wouldn't otherwise have been able to afford.

When I met her father, he began to explain he was too poor once and that he would hate to throw away things that can be very useful.

Before he showed me what he was giving away, I thought the toys would be mostly lego's(乐高积木) or things like that. When he was showing me around I saw a bed, a slide, a kitchen set and many other things that just blew my mind. He told me to write a list of everything my daughter could use and as my eyes were wide, he told me not to feel guilty. He said I was helping him by getting rid of the stuff.

As I was looking around I did feel guilty, but I tried to remain more grateful than guilty. Every time I tried to thank him for giving me and my daughter all this wonderful stuff he would thank me right back. I wanted to believe that he was just thanking me so that I wouldn't feel so guilty but in reality I believe that he was as grateful as I was that these toys would be put to good use.

In the eyes of charity, it makes sense to feel grateful, but guilt is just as normal.  I know that we could have lived without a slide, which is why I do feel guilty, but I am grateful all the same because my daughter really does enjoy all these nice things!

【1Why did the old man want to give away his toys?

    A. He wanted to help those poor children.

    B. He was wealthy enough to buy new toys.

    C. He wanted to make full use of those toys.

    D. He needed some space for more useful things.

【2In the writer's opinion, the old man felt grateful because

    A. he wanted to make her more guilty

    B. he wanted her to take the toys quickly

    C. the toys would be put to good use

    D. he finally got rid of the stuff

【3What can we know from the passage?

    A. The writer took all the toys home.

    B. The old man was a kind and thoughtful person

    C. The writer wanted to refuse the stuff when she first saw them.

    D. The writer's daughter enjoyed the slide most among all the stuff.

【4How did the writer feel when given the stuff?

    A. Guilty and honored.    B. Grateful and respected.

    C. Honored and respected.   D. Guilty and grateful.

  • 24、Todd Bol, a retired businessman, could never have expected that a wooden container he built in his front yard one day would have the global impact it does today.

Bol built a dollhouse-size structure that looked like a schoolhouse on a post and he put it in his yard as a free community library to remember his mother, who was a book lover and school teacher. Bol’s design gave birth to Little Free Library (LFL), a nonprofit organization that seeks to place small, accessible book exchange boxes in neighborhoods around the world. The concept is simple: Neighbors are invited to share a book, leave a book, or both. Today, there are over 50,000 of these libraries registered in 70 countries.

Almost everyone can register with LFL and start a library as long as the person keeps it in good shape and makes sure that book materials are appropriate for his/her neighborhood. Library owners can create their own library boxes; therefore, the libraries are usually unique in appearance, and there seems to be no limit to the possibilities. One library in California was built out of a used wine container; another in Texas had tiny stairs and bright colored walls. Once registered, libraries are assigned a number at LFL’s website. The LFL Index lists the locations of all libraries with GPS coordinates (坐标) and other information. Owners receive a sign saying “Little Free Library”.

People say they have been attracted to pick up a book when walking by a Little Free Library, out of curiosity and because it’s convenient. Some sidewalk librarians say they have met more neighbors since having a little library in their front yard. Bol is also most proud of the way Little Free Library is bringing communities together. “It’s started a neighborhood exchange. It gets people talking and more comfortable with their neighbors,” he says. “This leads to them helping each other.”

【1】What does the underlined word “design” in Paragraph 2 refer to?

    A.A community center.

    B.A dollhouse on a post.

    C.A book exchange box.

    D.A nonprofit organization.

【2】What can we learn about the operation of a Little Free Library?

A.There is no limit to the selection of books.

B.The library can come in any shape and color.

C.The library needs to hire many professional librarians.

D.The owner must first be assigned a number from the LFL website.

【3】What can be inferred about Little Free Library?

    A.It helps improve GPS functions.

B.It connects libraries around the world.

C.It makes reading accessible to the poor.

    D.It helps restore human connections.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

A.LFL: A Booster to Shared Reading

B.LFL: The Best Place to Meet Neighbors

C.Todd Bol: A Successful Book Businessman

D.Reading: An Approach to Improving Yourself
