二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、A song plays in a crowded supermarket. To some people, this is just background music. But others can take out their smartphones and discover that implanted in the music is information, maybe a Wi-Fi password or a website URL. The scene is the vision put forward by Simon Tanner from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology.

“The whole idea is basically that we can send data locally without any setup,” Tanner explained, “We don't have to type any passwords or pair devices or anything like that. We just have speakers that can broadcast data along with a song and anyone in range could access it.” He also discovered not all music is created equal when it comes to data. It's easier to hide it on songs with more distracting loud notes.

If data wasn't hidden and was just put into a song, it might sound like random static (静电噪声) or a series of unpleasant sounds. But Tanner's program looks at very small parts of the song, and analyzes which tones are most dominant (支配的). Then data is added to the dominant tones. Because the data is now masked in the dominant tones, the song doesn't sound different to the human ear, but it does to a microphone.

Now, the data is transferred in about 200 bits (比特,存储单位) per second, which could be the length of a Wi-Fi password, or a short message. As the research continues to mature, the amount of data that can be stuffed into a song will likely expand to 1120 bits, which is the length of a standard text message.

But this will never be a system for mass data sending. For one thing, the more data you put into a song, the more noticeable it comes and the more difficult it is to hide. For another, this system of placing data in music isn't quicker than current ones. And it isn't the most secure system. Anyone in the room could receive the data with the app.

【1】The purpose of the first paragraph is to .

    A.summarize the whole passage

    B.introduce the topic

    C.offer background information

D.show a scene in the future

【2】What can we learn about sending data through music?

A.Data could be sent in a broad range without any setup.

B.Mass data sending is impossible only due to its insecurity.

C.Data are hidden in a way that is unnoticeable to the human ear.

D.Data that can be sent now are of the length of a standard text message.

【3】What is the last paragraph mainly about?

A.The future of data sending through music.

B.The barriers to mass data sending through music.

C.The reasons for promoting the data-sending method.

D.The suggestions for applying the data-sending method.

  • 22、Everyone at Pacsafe is always eager to get out in the world and enjoy new cultures, food, and experiences. With that in mind we asked a few of our top travel bugs for their best travel destination recommendations for 2019. They also included their favorite Pacsafe bag to take on the trip. Enjoy and hopefully get some ideas for your own globe-trotting adventure.

Sri Lanka---Alison Hanko, Global Marketing Director

I’m going to Sri Lanka this summer holiday and can’t wait. It’s close to Hong Kong where I live and I’ve always wanted to go. The food is supposed to be amazing. It seems really relaxing and I really want to do the Kandy to Badulla train ride, which looks just stunning. We’ve booked a good mix of beaches, some time in a safari tent to hopefully see elephants in the wild.

For my bag, I’ll most likely take the Quiksilver 40L Pack because it has the built-in wet pack for my bikinis. It’s also a great size for a week-long trip in a warm climate.

    Japan---Ben Barras, Creative Director

Japan is definitely my best travel destination recommendation. The culture, the streets, the architecture, the inspiration you get from all of that is amazing. The food is also fascinating. It’s where I’m most planning to go. Tokyo obviously, but also visiting the mountains. You can go snowboarding, which I haven’t done for years.

I have a Vibe 25L Backpack which you can pack a lot in. The thing I like most about it is that it’s compact, but still fits plenty in. I’ll pair that up with a larger travel bag for the rest of my things and use the backpack to get around day to day.

Berlin---Phil Hayes, Executive VP of Global Design

For me, it’s definitely Berlin. I’m particularly excited about the fashion, which I hear is pretty full on. Also the art galleries and history. Food, nightlife. Everything I’ve heard about Berlin is pretty cool, so I’m going to suck as much as I can out of it. World’s Global Style Network had the Berlin shopping list that came out recently, so I’m going to follow that through as well.

Bag wise, it will be the Quiksilver X Collab Bag. It’s the 25L Anti-theft Backpack. It’s normally my go-to bag for city trips because it’s super easy to lock on the plane and in bars, and it’s just the right amount of space.

【1】Which of the Pacsafe bag is a good choice for beach travel?

    A.The Quiksilver 40L Pack.

    B.The Vibe 25L Backpack.

    C.The Quiksilver X Collab Bag.

    D.25L Anti-theft Backpack.

【2】If you are interested in fashion, which destination should you choose?

    A.Sri Lanka.

    B.Japan.

    C.Hong Kong.

    D.Berlin.

【3】What can you enjoy in all the three places mentioned?

    A.Beautiful beaches.

    B.Amazing food.

    C.Fascinating art.

    D.Cool snowboarding.

【4】The main purpose of the passage is to ________.

    A.share personal travelling experiences

B.offer practical tips on taking adventure

    C.present cultures in different countries

    D.recommend favorable travel destinations

  • 23、For eight-year-old Toby. who is deaf, watching films or TV can sometimes be a bit pointless, because so many of them don't have sign language versions. "We have subtitles but it goes too fast," his dad Jarod Mills said. But now, Toby has some help thanks to an app developed by a 17-year-old student, Mariella Satow, who created a signing app called SignUp.

She got the idea when she was teaching herself American Sign Language(ASL)—one of hundreds of sign languages used across the world. Mariella wanted to watch TV shows to help her learn, and she was disappointed to discover how few had signed versions. It's taken a year for Mariella to develop the technology, with lots of help from ASL teachers and the deaf community.

The app is available in the US as a browser extension—with an interpreter appearing in a box once the film starts playing. It only works on Disney Plus films at the moment, because that's where Mariella thought she could help the most children. Jarod, who works at a school for deaf children, says it was "exciting" watching Toby use Mariella's invention. He says, "Kids are getting information like any hearing child does."

Deaf people in the UK face many of the same barriers when it comes to cinema and TV. "A hearing person can go to the cinema any time whereas deaf people have to make sure there's a suitable viewing a time we're free," says 27-year-old Stacey Worboys from Cardiff. She has learned British Sign Language (BSL), and is comfortable using subtitles when watching TV shows and films. But she feels having an interpreter would make things "more inclusive", especially for someone who might struggle with subtitles. Stacey and Toby aren't the only people to be welcoming Mariella's app. It's now got thousands of users.

Stacey says a UK version of an app like SignUp would make films and TV "more accessible" for the deaf community. Mariella is up for the challenge—and hopes to make a British Sign Language version of her app for other streaming platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime. "There are more than 300 sign languages used worldwide, so it'll take a long time to get all of those versions out," she says.

    【1】Mariella created SignUp because of_________.

    A.her awareness of Toby's frustration

B.lack of signed TV shows for the deaf

C.her childhood memories in a cinema

    D.the encouragement from her teachers

【2】What will be Mariella's next challenge?

A.To update the app for cinemas.

B.To design a BSL version of the app.

C.To launch a universal version of the app

D.To promote the use of her app worldwide.

【3】Which of the following words can best describe Mariella?

    A.Creative and caring.

    B.Talented and humorous.

    C.Curious and fearless.

    D.Knowledgeable and humble.

  • 24、Many people rush into the commitment of bringing home a four-legged family member, only to find out that they are not ready for a pet. This often results in the dog being turned over to a shelter where it may not find another home. This can be avoided if potential pet owners take the time to figure out if they are truly ready for the responsibilities of pet ownership.

Being a responsible pet owner involves a financial commitment that goes beyond buying dog fooD. There are also parasite (寄生虫) prevention, boarding costs while traveling and the cost to care for the pet should it become ill or injureD. That is not to say that one must be rich in order to have a dog, but it is important to be prepared for the expenses that come with being a pet owner.

Another consideration is the time commitment. An owner away from home for 14 hours every day is not an ideal situation for a dog.A potential dog owner must also consider the time it takes to care for his or her pet, the time it takes to feed, walk, play with, bathe and clean up.Also, dogs require attention.Be prepared to spend time each day petting and playing with it.

Dogs are dogs, and will act like dogs. This includes barking, digging, having accidents in the house and, possibly, destroying some of the owner’s prized possessions, such as furniture, shoes and cell phones. If the above would cause an owner to want to get rid of the dog, then he or she is not yet ready to be a pet owner. Many wonderful pets end up in shelters simply because they acted like dogs!

【1】Who might be qualified to be a dog owner, according to the text?

    A. Jim, who has a daughter sensitive to dog’s smell.

    B. Dick, a jobless teenager who can hardly pay his rent.

    C. Kari, a teacher who works eight hours a day.

    D. Steven, a business man who travels a lot on business.

【2】To be a responsible dog owner you need to do all the following EXCEPT _________.

    A. finding a shelter for it when you are bored with it

    B. buying dog food and feeding it

    C. taking it to hospital when necessary

    D. spending time each day playing with it

【3】What does the underlined part in the first paragraph probably mean?

    A. Rush to adopt a dog formally.

    B. Decide to be a pet owner without thinking about it carefully.

    C. Run into a pet shelter and take one home so quickly.

    D. Commit to buy a dog and take it home.

【4】What might be the best title for the text?

    A. Dogs Are Dogs

    B. Pets Are Family Members

    C. Have Time for a Dog?

    D. Ready for a Pet?
