二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、D

When my friend put out the idea of homeschooling to her parents, the first reaction they gave was, “You are cutting the child off the world.” Did the child really get cut off or did the child socialize better?

The moment we hear of homeschooling, we think the child will have no opportunities to interact with peers. However, in my friend’s opinion, we forget that when attending a regular school, the child is not into socializing all the while. The child is confined to so many other activities. Studies take a major role in a child’s life. The child hardly has the time to interact at school.

The child might be meeting and studying along with many peers; however, how many kids interact with all the kids in a class? But in homeschooling system, as my friend mentioned, the kid has all the time and can plan his day accordingly. During the day the child studies just like other school-going kids but with no burden of homework and project work, the child has so much free time in the evening as to effectively interact and play with peers. The quality time the child spends in education is really impressive.

Homeschooled kids have the opportunity to socialize more often as they have a lot of time in their hands. They can also make socializing a regular habit. Just as my friend said, her child goes to a neighboring park almost every day and has a set of friends who go there daily. Other children get back home to finish off homework and project work whereas her child who is already through with studies gets the opportunity to spend time with family members.

When I heard this, I really felt how lucky the child was. Definitely the child had a better opportunity to socialize when compares with my kids. However, I might not consider homeschooling for my kid, as I am so used to the traditional schooling system and feel regular schooling the safest bet.

1What is the author’s attitude towards his friend’s idea of homeschooling?

    A. Surprised. B. Interested.

    C. Negative.   D. Confident.

2The author’s purpose in writing the passage is to _________.

    A. explain what homeschooling is.

    B. express his views on homeschooling.

    C. share his ways of teaching his children.

    D. promote homeschooling.

3The underlined word “confined” in the Para.2 can be replaced by _______.

    A. free   B. restricted

    C. devoted     D. accustomed

4 According to the author what is the biggest advantage of homeschooling children?

    A. They can be better at socializing.

    B. They can be more popular.

    C. They will become braver.

    D. They can study better.

5 How does the passage mainly develop?

    A. By following the order of importance.

    B. By following the order of time

    C. By presenting facts.

    D. By making comparison.

  • 22、Transhumanism, first coined in 1957 by biologist Julian Huxley, meant “man remaining man, but going beyond himself by realizing new possibilities of and for his human nature.” Generally speaking, transhumanism in its modern meaning implies that human beings can be enhanced by the means of science to the extent when they rise above biological limitations and capabilities programmed by nature. The species into which humanity transforms this way will be called post human, or trans human, as it would have been something new — based on human nature, but going beyond it at the same time.

There are numerous areas which, according to transhumanists, require enhancement, as well as there are countless proposals on the means of such enhancement. In particular, transhumanists work on such problems as overcoming the physical boundaries of the human body. Starting with aging, which they believe to be rather a disease than a natural process, and ending up with replacing organs with their artificial ones, transhumanists believe that the human body is imperfect, and that it should be improved. All kinds of nanotechnologies for repairing damaged organs; nerve stimulants and drugs to alter mood and eliminate negative emotions; brain implants and implanted technologies to allow interconnectivity between multiple human beings and to advance intelligence—these and many more actions are just some of the means transhumanists plan to use to make humanity better. Some of the technologies transhumanists plan to employ to push the boundaries of humanity are available already. For example, gene therapy allowing to cure or stop certain diseases that were considered terminal; CRISPRi or SHARP-2 methods, which were discovered not so long ago, have already proved to be efficient in treating a number of complicated medical conditions, and in case further research is conducted, they might significantly improve the quality of medicine worldwide. Virtual reality, another technology from science-fiction movies of the late 1980s, has become not so virtual either, after all. VR device can be easily purchased from online stores, and the prices are affordable — given that we are speaking of technology capable of substituting actual reality. So far, it has been mostly used for games and education, but in the future, the range of its useful applications will definitely broaden. Other technologies, which have not yet been invented but which definitely will, include large scale engineering, self-copying robotics, artificial intelligence, mind uploading technologies, molecular manufacturing, space colonization, and other technological wonders.

About a hundred years ago, the idea of flying in the skies seemed absurd, until Wilbur and Orville Wright proved this assumption wrong. Who knows, perhaps in a couple of decades the concepts listed here, no matter how fantastic they look now, will become reality. Moral aspects and the price humanity will have to pay for such advancements are a different subject.

【1】Which of the following statements is true about transhumanism?

A.Promoting human health but remaining their physical appearances

B.Improving the human condition through social and cultural change

C.Developing human beings beyond their natural capabilities by technology.

D.Going beyond human beings physical limitations through natural evolution.

【2】Transhumanists’ plan is based on the belief that_________.

A.replacing organs with their artificial ones is ideal

B.aging is rather a disease than a natural process

C.it’s practical to use nanotechnologies to improve life

D.the human body is imperfect and needs improvement

【3】The underlined word “absurd” (last paragraph) is closest in meaning to_________.

    A.ridiculous

    B.creative

    C.reasonable

    D.practical

【4】This passage is particularly written about_________.

A.various kinds of definitions of transhumanism

    B.different technologies substituting human reality

C.proposals on the human beings enhancement

D.artificial intelligence and human beings life

  • 23、   Intelligence makes for better leaders —from undergraduates to managers to presidents — according to multiple studies. It certainly makes sense that handling a market shift or anything alike require intelligence. But new research on leadership suggests that, at a certain point, having a higher IQ stops helping and starts hurting.

Although previous research has shown that groups with smarter leaders perform better by objective measures, some studies have suggested that followers might subjectively view leaders with extremely high intellect as less effective. Decades ago, Dean Simonton, a psychologist from the University of California, Davis, proposed that brilliant leaders' words may simply go over people's heads, their solutions could be more complicated to carry out and followers might find it harder to relate to them. Now Simonton and two colleagues have finally tested that idea, publishing their results in the July 2017 issue of the Journal of Applied Psychology.

The researchers looked at 379 male and female business leaders in 30 countries across fields including banking, retail and technology. The managers took IQ tests and each was rated on leadership style and effectiveness by an average of eight co-workers. IQ positively correlated (和......正相关)with ratings of leader effectiveness, strategy formation, vision and several other characteristics—up to a point. The ratings peaked at an IQ of around 120, which is higher than roughly 80 percent of office workers. Beyond that, the ratings declined. The researchers suggest the "ideal" IQ could be higher or lower in various fields, to 140 or 100, depending on whether technical or social skills are more valued in a given work culture.

"It's an interesting and thoughtful paper,” says Paul Sackett, a management professor at University of Minnesota, who was not involved in the research. “To me, the right interpretation of the work would be that it highlights a need to understand what high-IQ leaders do that leads to lower understanding by followers,” he says. “The wrong interpretation would be, “Don’t hire high-IQ leaders.'"

The study’s lead author, John Antonakis, a psychologist at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland, suggests leaders should use their intelligence to use creative language that will persuade and inspire others—the way former U.S. President Barack Obama did. "I think the only way a smart person can signal their intelligence properly and still connect with the people,”  Antonakis says, "is to speak in charming ways."

1The reason why those with high IQs are viewed as worse leaders is probably that .

A.followers think of their leaders to be less effective

B.their IQ has a positive correlation with leader effectiveness

C.they are hard to get their schemes across to followers

D.their social skills can't be recognized in some work culture

2Which of the following graphs shows the correct relationship between IQ points and leadership qualities?

    A. B.

    C. D.

3To improve their leadership, high-IQ leaders can.

A.interpret the work they are involved in

    B.use inspiring and accessible language

C.take a course in leader effectiveness

    D.communicate more with their followers

4What could be the best title for the passage?

A.A way to success for high-IQ leaders

    B.The latest research on intelligence

C.Choose to be a leader of low intelligence

D.Does a high IQ advance your leadership

  • 24、Innovation has pretty much finished with car tires (轮胎) right, I mean, what’s left to change? How about the whole “air” part?

Michelin Company’s attempt to tackle tire rubbish around the world witnessed them roll out puncture-proof “airless” tires, which they say should help reduce the 18% of all world tires that are abandoned early due to punctures (轮胎漏气). Deserted tires arc a huge worldwide waste problem — the US produces 260 million abandoned tires per year, many of which end up in landfills or on the sides of the freeway where they release harmful gases and microplastic pollutants as they break down.

Michelin Company's Unique Puncture Proof Tire System or “UPTIS” is designed using 46% recycled material, and made from a plastic matrix (母体) mixed with glass fibers that provide a flexible outer layer with a strong inner one. “The truly distinctive structure of the Michelin UPTIS prototype (原型), or its “strangeness” as we have often heard it called, really attracted the eye of many visitors and left a lasting impression on them,” stated Cyrille Roget, Michelin Group Technical and Scientific Communications Director. “It was an unusual experience for us, and our greatest satisfaction came at the end of the demonstration when our passengers, who were undoubtedly a little alert (警觉) at first, said they felt no difference compared with conventional tires.”

Michelin Company believes airless tires will improve everyone's lives. Maintenance (保养) costs for company’s vehicle fleets will be less expensive, and inexperienced car owners won’t accidentally ruin their rubbers when driving them because they are over-or under-inflated (充气). Although they are still in development stage and using at a large scale within years is unlikely to be available, Michelin Company is not in the least doubtful about their tires’ future.

【2】What is the main idea of the second paragraph?

A.The new tire runs more smoothly.

B.The world greatly needs airless tires.

    C.Traditional tires threaten the environment.

D.Michelin Company battles the issue of wasted tires.

【3】What do we know about “UPTIS”?

    A.Its structure distances visitors.

    B.It only uses recycled materials.

C.It combines plastic and glass fibers.

    D.Its comfortableness beats ordinary tires.

【4】What’s Michelin Company’s attitude towards their new tires?

    A.Tolerant.

    B.Positive.

    C.Mixed.

    D.Objective.
