21、What kind of people can become scientists? When a group of researchers posed that question to ninth-and 10th-graders, almost every student gave such responses as “People who work hard” or “Anyone who seems interested in the field of science.”
Many of these same students struggled to imagine themselves as scientists, citing concerns such as “I’m not good at science” and “Even if I work hard, I will not do well.” It’s easy for them to see a scientist’s work as arising from an inborn talent.
But for high school students, learning more about some struggles of scientists can help students feel more motivated to learn science. Researchers at Teachers College, Columbia University and the University of Washington designed an intervention to change students’ beliefs that scientific achievement reflects ability rather than effort by exposing students to stories of how accomplished scientists struggled and overcame challenges in their scientific efforts.
During the study, the students read one of three types of stories about Albert Einstein, Marie Curie and Michael Faraday. Intellectual struggle stories: stories about how scientists “struggled intellectually,” such as making mistakes while tackling a scientific problem and learning from them. Life struggle stories: stories about how scientists struggled in their personal lives, such as not giving up in the face of poverty or lack of family support. Achievement stories: stories about how scientists made great discoveries, without any discussion of coexisting challenges.
Researchers found that students who heard either type of “struggle stories” improved their science performance post-intervention, relative to students in the control group. The effect was especially pronounced for lower performing students, for whom exposure to struggling stories led to significantly better science-class performance than low-performing students who read achievement stories. In addition, students who read struggle stories reported feeling more personally connected to the scientists. By identifying a scientist’s struggles and introducing the growth mindset he or she applied to accomplish great works, the students were able to empathize(共情)with the scientists during their own struggles.
【1】Why do students fail to imagine themselves as scientists?
A.They lack interest in science.
B.They don’t possess inborn talent,
C.They are short of confidence.

【3】The underlined word “pronounced” in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to ________.
A.delicate
B.permanent

C.Scientists’ struggle stories can influence readers’ beliefs.
D.Low-performing students tend to feel connected to scientists.
22、Have you ever accidentally walked into the wrong place that end up changing your life? That’s what happened to Maceo Thomas of Lakewood, Colorado. One night, Maceo left his home to find a store where she could buy a back staff cane (拐杖). He weighed over 300 pounds. His doctor, concerned about his health, had suggested Maceo try yoga (瑜伽). But Maceo could barely walk, needing to use a cane to get around.
He entered what he thought was the right store—only to find black belts instead. He’d walked into the hall of the Rocky Mountain Karate Association. Hale Hilsabeck, owner and director of the studio, greeted him. Maceo told Hale he’d always wanted to learn karate (空手道), but was discouraged because of his weight. Hale told him to come back the next day to begin learning karate and boxing—free of charge.
Maceo began training two to three times, a week. Hale was amazed by his determination. “I was enthusiastic because he kept on showing up.” he said, “I thought he might disappear after the first couple or three times that he was there. But, no.”
Now, over five years later, Maceo weighs 60 pounds less and no longer walks with a staff. He can dance and deliver powerful boxes. I called Maceo to find out more. This all happened for a reason, he told me. Most of all, his faith was renewed, both in himself and in a higher power. Maceo’s story inspired me. Next time I ended up in a “wrong place”. Maybe I will stay there a minute longer—to see if that unexpected opportunity shows up.

A.He didn’t buy a cane.
B.He is too fat.
C.He can’t walk at all.

【3】After Maceo began learning karate and boxing, .

23、Robots in the art world are nothing new. In fact, for centuries, people have built robots as art objects — or simple machines that perform a series of movements — in ancient China and Japan. However, what's different now is that artists and engineers are building robots that actually create art.
In 1973, British-born painter Harold Cohen wrote a computer program and called it AARON. At first, AARON only made simple outlines whose color and details Cohen would later add. Fifty years later, landscapes and just about anything else a human could paint. So can AARON be called an artist or creative? In 2010, Cohen addressed these questions. He explained, AARON can generate unlimited numbers of images." So according to Cohen, the simple answer is yes — AARON is creative.
It's not just paintings that robots are creating, though. Last year, a robot called Shimon released its first album on Spotify. Shimon began life as a simple robot marimba, however, it's learned how to jam, write original songs and compose lyrics. Shimon does this by analyzing huge amounts of music — roughly 50, 000 rock.
It may be cool to hear a song created by a robot, but is there any other reason to build robots that can play music? According to Gil Weinberg, one of Shimon's creators, he and his team "hope and believe that these new abilities would push human cooperators to new uncharted directions that could not be achieved in human-to-human cooperation."
While questions about robots creating art are fun to think about, there are many other ways that robots can help artists in the way they create their works. For example, advancements in 3D-printing technology will allow artists to build more complex pieces for their sculptures.
【1】What was AARON able to do at first?
A.Paint people and landscapes.
B.Prepare basic outlines for Cohen.
C.Draw pictures of itself and Cohen.
D.Color paintings under Cohen's instructions.
【2】What does the article tell us about Shimon?
A.It is both a marimba and guitar player.
B.It has created about 50, 000 original songs.
C.It is expected to push humans to achieve more.
D.Its creators hope that it can outperform humans.
【3】What does the author's attitude toward robots that create art?
A.Positive.
B.Worried.
C.Neutral.
D.Doubtful.
【4】Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.AARON And Shimon
B.Robots in the Real World
C.Programmed Creativity
D.Advancements in Technology
24、A former UPS driver and his wife have made history by donating $20 million to Morgan State University – the largest gift any historically black college or university (HBCU) has ever received from a former student. The money, pledged by Calvin Tyler Jr and his wife Tina, will fund scholarships that were established under the Tylers’ name in 2002.
Tyler grew up in a low-income family and was forced to drop out of Morgan State University in 1963 because he could no longer afford to study. The following year, Tyler saw a job advertisement in a Baltimore newspaper from United Parcel Service and got a job with the company as a driver. He rose through the ranks during his 34-year career at the global shipping company to become its senior vice president of US operations and a member of the board of directors before retiring in 1998.
Tyler and his wife, also a Baltimore native, have lived all across the country but he said they have never forgotten their humble beginnings.
Their latest pledge follows a $5million commitment they made in 2016 for the fund, which to date has supported 222 students with full or partial scholarships.
Marybeth Gasman, a professor at Rutgers University who studies HBCUs, said the gift is significant because public HBCU’s like Morgan State University tend to have a lower alumni giving rate compared to private ones.
“For a long time, they weren’t asking alumni to give,” she said. But that has changed in the past couple of decades, she added, and the schools have “started asking alumni to give and creating a culture of philanthropy (慈善) on campus.”
David K. Wilson, the president of Morgan State University, said the money will help students for years to come. “Morgan is so proud to call this son and daughter of the great city of Baltimore our own,” he said in a statement. “Through their historic giving, the doors of higher education will most certainly be kept open for generations of aspiring leaders whose financial shortfalls may have kept them from realizing their academic dreams.”
“We are forever indebted to the Tylers”.

【3】Which is true about HBCUs according to Gasman?
A.They are mainly public universities.
B.They are encouraging alumni to donate.
C.They rarely accept help from the alumni.
D.They have changed little over the decades.
【4】What can be inferred about Tyler from Wilson’s comments?
A.He’s helped many city leaders.
B.He’s grateful to his university.
C.He’s made great contributions.
D.He’s proud of his son and daughter.
