二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、When most kids go to the beach, they’re too focused on making sandcastles and splashing around to notice litter, but several years ago, for 7-year-old Cash Daniels, noticing a plastic straw sparked a lifelong passion for saving the planet.

Cash, who is now known as the “conservation kid”, has always loved nature. He grew up fishing along the Chattanooga River, after all! But once he learned that 80 percent of all trash from land and rivers ends up in the ocean, he couldn’t sit back.

He started with cleanups along the river, something that quickly went from a family affair to a community effort with volunteers and neighbors. In 2019, Cash, together with a Canadian conservationist, Ella Galaski-Rossen, started a nonprofit called the Cleanup Kids. Despite living in different countries, they managed to create educational videos on their YouTube channel. “We hope to be a really big nonprofit that eliminates plastic in the U. S. and Canada,” Cash said. “We want to inform kids and adults in the landlocked states on how their actions are connected to the water and the ocean,” Cash said.

Cash was selected as one of America’s top 10 youth volunteers of 2021 by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. He also earned the title of National Honoree, where he received a$5,000 grant to go to a nonprofit of his choice, and he became the first person to win the Youth Conservationist Award two years in a row from the Tennessee Wildlife Federation.

“I want to travel the world, teach others, and help them feel connected to the ocean. Because if you are connected to the ocean-if you love it and what lives in it—you’ll want to protect it,” he said. “This is my fun, and it becomes more fun with every new discovery.”

    D.Actions speak louder than words.

  • 22、   Colorado' s grays peak(山顶)rises 14,278 feet above sea level, high enough that trees can't grow toward the top, though there are plenty of bushes and rocks. It was in this unforgiving area that Bev Wedelstedt was unlucky enough to have her left knee broken.

It was August 2018, and Wedelstedt, 56, was on her way back down the path with three friends. A storm was coming, and they were anxious to get off the mountain. When they approached a rocky drop of a couple of feet, Wedelstedt decided to jump over it. She landed on her left leg. Then she heard the snap (咔嚓声).

Every step after that was great pain. Before long, she had to stop. As one friend ran down to get help, a number of other hikers, all strangers, attempted to help Wedelstedt down the narrow path by walking on either side of her to support her weight, but that proved slow and dangerous.

Finally, one hiker, Matt, asked her, “How do you feel about a fireman's carry?” Before she knew it, he had lifted her over his shoulder. “Now, I' m not tiny,” says Wedelstedt, a former college basketball star. Matt clearly couldn't carry her all the way down by himself. So six hikers and one of her friends took turns carrying her while she tried to make light of a difficult situation. Three hours and two rock –strewn (遍布) miles later, this human conveyor belt finally met the doctors, who took Wedelstedt to the hospital.

She has mostly recovered from her hike, but Wedelstedt knows she'll I never shake one thing from that day: the memory of the band of strangers who came to her rescue. “I'm still in awe.” says Wedelstedt.

A.She was caught in a heavy storm. B.She injured her left knee.

C.She was blocked by rocks and bushes. D.She got lost in the mountain.

    2How did Matt help Wedelstedt?

A.By taking her directly to the hospital. B.By calling in firemen.

C.By carrying her down the mountain. D.By giving her first aid.

3What is Wedelstedt ’s attitude towards the band of strangers?

    A.Respectful. B.Ambiguous. C.Sympathetic. D.Tolerant.

4What is the best title for the text?

    A.Narrow Paths B.Lifelong friendship

    C.Dangerous Hikes D.Peak Performance

  • 23、   Joseph Francis Charles Rock (1884–1962) was an Austrian-American explorer, botanist, and anthropologist(人类学家). For more than 25 years, he travelled extensively through Tibet and Yunnan, Gansu, and Sichuan provinces in China before finally leaving in 1949.

In 1924, Harvard sent Joseph Francis Rock on a treasure hunt through China’s southwestern provinces—the Wild West of their day. But gold and silver weren’t his task : Rock, a distinguished botanist, sought only to fill his bags with all the seeds, saplings, and shrubs he could find. During his three-year expedition, he collected 20,000 specimens for the Arnold Arboretum(阿诺德植物园).

Botany, though, was just one of Rock’s strengths. As an ethnologist(民族学者), he took hundreds of photographs of the Naxi, a tribe in Yunnan province, recording their now-lost way of life for both Harvard and National Geographic, and took notes for an eventual 500-page dictionary of their language. His hand-drawn map of his travels through China’s “Cho-Ni” territory, in the Harvard Map Collection, includes more than a thousand rivers, towns, and mountains indicated in both English and Chinese, and was so well made that the U.S. government used it to plan aerial missions in World War II.

Scientist, linguist, cartographer, photographer, writer—Rock was not a wallflower in any sense. Arrogant and self-possessed, he would walk into a village or warlord’s place “as if he owned the place,” said Lisa Pearson, the Arboretum’s head librarian.

In declaring his successful return under the headline “Seeking Strange Flowers, in the Far Reaches of the World” , the Boston Evening Transcript ran a large photo of the daring explorer wearing in a woolly coat and fox-skin hat. “In discussing his heroism including hair-raising escapes from death either from mountain slides, snow slides and robber armies, he waves the idea away as if it is of no importance.”

The Arboretum and Rock parted ways after 1927, mainly because his trip cost Harvard a fortune—about $900,000 in today’s dollars. Fortunately, many of his specimens, many of his amazing photos, and his great stories remain.

1What is the passage mainly about?

A.Rock’s service for the U.S government.

    B.Rock’s cooperation with Harvard.

    C.Rock’s work as a botanist.

    D.Rock’s exploration in Southwest China.

2What contribution did Rock make to the USA besides collecting new plants and specimens?

A.He traveled through some uncivilized places in China.

B.His hand-drawn map was used in WWII.

C.He showed heroism by escaping difficulties.

D.He made headlines in Boston Evening News.

3How did Rock respond when people mentioned his heroic deeds?

    A.Excitedly. B.Proudly.

    C.Calmly D.Nervously.

4What caused Rock to stop work for The Arboretum?

A.The vast expense. B.The dangerous journey.

C.The challenging tasks. D.The unknown world.

  • 24、Crows (乌鸦) are incredibly smart. Researchers have already discovered that these dark birds possess primary consciousness- the ability possessed by humans and some primates to integrate memories to think in terms of past and present. A recent study expands the wealth of knowledge on these clever creatures. In the study, researchers discovered that crows can comprehend the concept of zero.

The concept of "none", or the absence of any quantity, which emerged earlier than the concept of zero, differs from using zero as a distinct “quantity", in and of itself. Zero is actually a rather recent mathematical invention. This makes the crow's newly discovered ability all the more impressive.

Going into their experiment,' the researchers at the University of Fubiggen in Germany knew that crows have certain neurons(神经元) which light up when they see certain quantities displayed. One dot fires a certain neuron, two another, three another, and four yet another, It was therefore already known that crows could distinguish these quantities from one another.

To test whether crows could comprehend zero as a numerical value, the researchers showed crows two displays of dots (点), each display containing between zero and four. The crows were trained to indicate if the two displays showed the same value. While they did this, researchers observed how their brains responded. When the crows saw "zero" dots, their brains tired a new neuron recognizing new “quantity."

Sometimes the birds made mistakes, identifying two displays as representing the same quantity. “Where zero was concerned, the bird more often confused it for displays with one dot than those with two or more," said co-author Andreas Nieder. “This effect would only be expected if crows can understand the empty set as the smallest numerical value on the number line."

【1】What has a recent study found about crows?

    A.They possess the past memories.

    B.They master some number skills.

    C.They are remarkably intelligent birds.

D.They understand the meaning of zero.

【2】What does the underlined "This" in Paragraph 2 probably refer to?

A.The origin of the concept of zero.

B.The creation of zero as a number.

    C.The earlier appearance of “none”.

D.The existence of “none" in maths.

【3】How did the researchers carry out their study?

    A.By analyzing the previous data

    B.By monitoring crows' brain activity.

C.By displaying dots with the same value .

D.By predicting crows' patterns of behavior,

【4】What can be learned from Andreas Nieder's words?

A.The crows' performance comes as no surprise.

B.It's incredible that crows can recognize zero.

C.The crows' mistakes are beyond expectation.

D.It's impossible for crows to confuse zero with one dot.

She was a large woman with a large purse that had everything in it. It had a long strap(带子), and she carried it slung(挂) across her shoulder, It was about eleven o’clock at night, and she was walking alone, when a boy ran up behind her and tried to grab her purse. The strap broke with the single hard pull the boy gave it from behind. But the boy’s weight and the weight of the purse combined caused him to lose his balance so the boy fell on his back. The large woman simply turned around and kicked him.

Then she picked the boy up by his shirt front, and said, “Pick up my purse. boy, and give it to me.” She bent down enough to permit him to bend and pick up her purse. “Now, aren’t you ashamed of yourself?”

“I’m very sorry, lady, I’m sorry,” whispered the boy, He looked as if he were fourteen or fifteen, weak, thin and willow-wild, in worn tennis shoes and blue jeans.

“Um-hum! Your face is dirty. I’ve got a great mind to wash your face for you. Don’t you get anybody home to tell you to wash your face?”

“No, madam.” said the being-dragged boy.

She dragged him up the street. When she got to her door, she dragged the boy inside, down a hall, and into a large kitchen-furnished room.

She asked. “What is your name?”

    “Roger,” answered the boy.

“Then, Roger. you go to that sink and wash your face,” said the woman, whereupon she turned him loose at last Roger looked at the door-looked at the woman-looked at the door—and went to the sink.
