21、Though they may not know it, about half a billion people depend on the ecosystems created and sustained by corals. And with climate change threatening coral’s survival, marine scientist Enric Sala had a goal that might have seemed impossible.
“We wanted to get into a time machine, go back hundreds of years and actually see a coral reef like they used to be everywhere, before we started exploiting, polluting and killing them,” Sala said.
The goal was made possible during an expedition Sala led in 2009. The team traveled to a corner of the South Pacific Ocean, to see if the almost untouched reefs held any clues to bringing damaged reefs in other parts of the ocean back to health.
“The bottom was covered by thriving coral. Vivid colors surrounded me-purples, reds, oranges, yellows and greens. It was so beautiful,” Sala said.
His team presented their findings to officials in the island country of Kiribati. The government took steps to protect the waters from fishing. But between 2015 and 2016, record levels of ocean warming damaged half the coral reefs the team had been studying.
After hearing that news, they lost hope for the health of coral reefs. Last year, they went in for another dive. Despite the reported conditions, the reef had somehow restored itself, filled with life and color once more. Sala and his team were overjoyed. This is something that Sala says can be owed to two key factors.
The first is, thankfully, half of the corals had not died. Despite the rise in temperatures, there were enough surviving corals left behind to help reproduce the reefs. The second was the Kiribati government’s decision to fully protect those waters.
“It has an abundance of fish. So they were eating all the algae (藻类) that would cover the dead corals, and make it impossible for the corals to come back, which is what happens in other places like the Caribbean,” Sala explained.
【1】What seemingly impossible goal does Sala have?
A.Educating the public to protect the ecosystems.
B.Calling on people to actively respond to climate change.
C.Going to old days when corals were in healthy condition.
D.Leading an expedition to the South Pacific Ocean.
【2】What does the underlined word “This” in paragraph 6 refer to?
A.The bad news.
B.The second diving.
C.The reef’s restoration.
D.The cheerful mood.
【3】What can we infer about Caribbean from Sala’s words?
A.There is abundant fish in its ocean.
B.Algae lie thick over corals there.
C.Global warming does little harm to its marine life.
D.Corals come back to life thanks to government’s efforts.
【4】What is the best title for the text?
A.Kiribati—A Country of Biodiversity
B.A Scientist’s Love for Diving
C.The Coral Reef Restored Itself
D.Ocean Warming Bothered Government
22、Ayla Bashir, a 16-month-old girl from Ottowa, Canada, is healthy after doctors used a new method to treat her before she was born.
Ayla Bashir has a rare genetic disease that killed two of her sisters. The disease, called Pompe, causes the body to fail to make some or all of an important enzyme (酶). Babies with Pompe disease have trouble feeding and experience muscle weakness. They often have very enlarged hearts, and when left untreated, most babies die during the first year of life.
Luckily, a new case study describes the new treatment method that seems to be working for Ayla. Dr. Karen Fung-Kee-Fung is a medicine specialist who works with fetuses (胎儿) at The Ottawa Hospital. She co-worked with Dr. Tippi MacKenzie, both of whom were motivated to bring their research to this family.
In this case, doctors delivered important enzymes to the mother through her stomach. The enzymes were then guided into the umbilical cord (脐带). Ayla received six treatments every two weeks, starting at about 24 weeks of fetus development. Now Ayla receives drugs for her immune system (免疫系统) and weekly enzyme treatments that take five to six hours. Unless a new method is found, Ayla is likely to continue the treatments throughout her life.
For now, doctors are waiting to see whether the treatment can become a generally accepted form of treatment. Dr. Christina Lam said it will take some time to clearly demonstrate whether the results of the new treatment are better for patients.
The young girl’s parents recently told The Associated Press their daughter is now an active, happy girl who is growing normally. The future for Ayla is hopeful but uncertain. “It amazes us every time,” said her mother, Sobia Qureshi. “We’re so blessed.”
【1】What does the death of the babies with Pompe disease probably result from?
A.Poor attending.
B.Heart problems.
C.Muscle weakness.
D.Too much enzyme.
【2】How was Ayla treated before birth?
A.By chemical treatment once a week.
B.By taking drugs for her immune system.
C.By eating enzymes three times every week.
D.By receiving enzymes through her mother’s body.
【3】What does Dr. Christina Lam think of the treatment effect?
A.Doubtful.
B.Hopeful.
C.Uncertain.
D.Challenging.
【4】What is the text mainly about?
A.Doctors treat deadly disease before birth.
B.Three children died from the same disease.
C.A new medical study was carried out in Canada.
D.Babies are saved with the help of new technology.
23、Do you know what really troubles me? For some reason, words with silent letters have always bothered me. For example, consider these words: know, design, island, school, wrist, naughty, and salmon. All of these words have at least one letter that is not typically pronounced, and these words are just a very small part of words with silent letters in them.
Some words are even worse, consider this word: colonel. Not only are some letters not pronounced, but letters that are not even there are pronounced.
Even foreign languages, especially French, are guilty of this needless complexity and confusion. I know there must be some main historical reasons why the words are spelled and pronounced the way they are, but that does not mean bad traditions must continue to survive. Especially if they are no longer logical.
Unfortunately, there is very little that anyone can do for it, because there’s no group of people who can change or have the right to change the English language for everyone. However, the only thing we can do is make changes in the way we talk and write in hopes that it_____For example, I pronounce the letter “l” in salmon on purpose to make people annoyed and to sound more different or complicated. I even pronounce colonel the correct or French way.
I can only hope these two minor changes to the English language make sense to you, and you will help to keep up these minor changes forever in your everyday life.
【1】Which of the following is the main reason for silent letters?
A. French language. B. Historical reasons.
C. Some linguists D. Bad traditions.
【2】The underlined phrase “catches on” probably means “________”.

C. follows the fashions D. doesn’t fall behind

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Finders Keepers
It was the middle of the day on a bright sunny Saturday, Jay and his friends Mike and Tony were riding their dirt bikes on one of their favorite off-road trails (小路). They usually didn’t ride early in the day or in the evening because hikers and runners liked the trail too, but the hikers and runners generally used the trail in the mornings and evenings.
On this particular day, when Jay and the boys were sitting on a tree branch to take a break, Jay spotted something shiny on the ground. “What do you think that could be?” he asked Mike and Tony as he pointed out the object reflecting the sun.
They all hopped down from the branch and went to take a closer look. What they found was incomprehensible to them. It was a gold money clip holding five hundred dollars.
Mike immediately exclaimed, “Awesome! We can split up the money, and we will each be much closer to being able to buy the new bikes we want. ” “Not so fast,” said Tony. “Jay was the one who spotted the cash. To be fair, he should get more than us. He should get three hundred dollars, and we should each get one hundred dollars. ”
“What are you guys, crazy?” asked Jay. “We can't keep the money. It isn't ours. Aren't we more mature than to play finders keepers like we did when we were kids?”
“Stop being such an advocate for honesty,” groaned Mike and Tony.
“Whoever lost the money wasn't very responsible and should learn a lesson about walking around with that much cash on them anyhow,” added Mike.
“Let's all go home and think about this,” said Jay. Mike and Tony agreed to Jay's suggestion. Jay kept the money, and they all rode their bikes home. They decided to meet up later at the head of the off-road trail.
