二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、About five years ago, an American electrical engineer named Scott Brusaw and his wife Julie came up with the idea of putting solar panels (控制板) on the ground rather than the roof. Then they began to develop the Solar Roadway. The Solar Roadway is an intelligent road that provides clean renewable energy using power from the sun while providing safer driving conditions, along with power and data delivery. They predict that the Solar Roadway will pay for itself through the generation of electricity along with other forms of income and that the same money that is being used to build and resurface current roads can be used to build the Solar Roadways.

Each Solar Road Panel measures roughly 4 meters by 4 meters and contains a microprocessor (微处理器) that monitors and controls the panel, while communicating with neighboring panels and the vehicles traveling overhead. The inventors suggest that this provides a communications device every 4 meters on every road which could be used for example to warn drivers of cars which are moving across a centre line and various other speed control problems. The top of the Solar Road panels is made of super-strong glass that would offer vehicles the tractions (抓地力)  they need.

According to the inventors, the Solar Roadway creates and carries clean renewable electricity and therefore electric vehicles can be recharged at any conveniently located rest stop, or at any business that has paved Solar Road Panels in their parking lots.

The inventors say their Solar Roadway has many functions and advantages from main roads to driveways, parking lots, bike paths, sidewalks and runways. The Federal Highway Administration has given Brusaw $100,000 to develop the invention and Brusaw hopes to build a smart-road parking lot in the coming spring .

【1】In the inventors’ opinion, the Solar Roadway ___________________________ .

    A. is too expensive to build at present

    B. costs no more money than current roads

    C. can provide as many data as present computers

    D. will bring them a large sum of money

【2】The underlined word “they” in Paragraph 2 refers to   .

    A. the panels  B. the inventors

    C. the researchers  D. the vehicles

【3】It can be inferred from the text that ____________________________.

    A. the Solar Roadway has already been put into use

    B. $100,000 is only enough to build a smart-road parking lot

    C. the Solar Roadway is not available for gas-powered cars

    D. future electric vehicles can be charged anytime and anywhere

【4】What can be the best title for the text?

    A. Solar-powered smart road of the future

    B. The great changes on the roadway

    C. The influence the Solar Roadway has on people

    D. The Solar Road—a much faster road

  • 22、Once again DC Comics and Warner Bros. have divided fans and critics over their latest superhero film.

There had been worrying news about Justice League in the months before its release, with a lot of reshoots of scenes, a new director being brought in to finish the film after original director Zack Snyder’s tragic loss of his daughter and, of course, a lot of talk about Ben Affleck’s future in the role of Batman.

Some people are saying that Justice League is another big disappointment, that it could have been incredible and instead fails to really entertain. Others say that Warner Bros. have finally got it right and that the future for the League looks bright.

My opinion lies somewhere in the middle. The film was by no means a disappointment: it was exciting, funny and a lot of fun to watch. There’s something special about watching the heroes from your childhood brought to life on the big screen and maybe that is affecting my opinion.

However, I will say that a lot of work needs to be done if the producer wants to make a great success. Although the film was good, it was obvious which scenes had been reshot and how the characters had been changed. I also have to mention the several scenes in which the special effects were very badly done; these are the kinds of problems that you don’t expect to see in a film with such a big budget.

Another point to add is that it is good to see the producer making Superman slightly a brighter character and adding some jokes to the plot to keep things fun. But the producer must be careful not to make the mistake that another film producer—here, not mentioning the name—is coming very close to doing: turning all of the films into bright and colorful shows and losing a lot of seriously good stories.

In the end, Justice League is not a perfect film but it is definitely not a terrible one. A lot of work is still to be done but I hope that DC does not completely lose its darker side.

【1】Before the release of Justice League, many people showed their ______.

A.pity for the director, Zack Snyder

    B.concern about the film’s quality

C.higher expectation of the new director

D.support for the actor, Ben Affleck

【2】According to the author, what’s special about Justice League?

    A.It advocates social justice.

B.It brings lots of fun to the audience.

    C.It has some brave heroes.

    D.It brings back childhood memories.

【3】In Paragraph 5 the author mainly wants to express his ______.

    A.views on the film’s weakness

    B.advice to the film’s director

    C.love for the film

    D.expectation of the film’s sequels

【4】The author mentioned another film producer to ______.

A.stress the importance of fun in a film

B.show Justice League’s lack of a serious plot

C.serve as a warning to the producer of Justice League

D.set an example for the producer of Justice League

  • 24、If you want to disturb the car industry, you’d better have a few billion dollars: Mom-and-pop carmakers are unlikely to beat the biggest car companies. But in agriculture, small farmers can get the best of the major players. By connecting directly with customers, and by responding quickly to changes in the markets as well as in the ecosystems, small farmers can keep one step ahead of the big guys. As the co-founder of the National Young Farmers Coalition (NYFC, 美国青年农会) and a family farmer myself, I have a front-row seat to the innovations among small farmers that are transforming the industry.

For example, the Quick Cut Greens Harvester is a tool developed just a couple of years ago by a young farmer, Jonathan Dysinger, in Tennessee, with a small loan from a local Slow Money group. It enables small-scale farmers to harvest 175 pounds of green vegetables per hour — a huge improvement over harvesting just a few dozen pounds by hand — suddenly making it possible for the little guys to compete with large farms of California. Before the tool came out, small farmers couldn’t touch the price per pound offered by California farms. But now, with the combination of a better price and a generally fresher product, they can stay in business.

The sustainable success of small farmers, though, won’t happen without fundamental changes to the industry. One crucial factor is secure access to land. Competition from investors, developers, and established large farmers makes owning one’s own land unattainable for many new farmers. From 2004 to 2013, agricultural land values doubled, and they continue to rise in many regions. Another challenge for more than a million of the most qualified farm workers and managers is a non-existent path to citizenship — the great barrier to building a farm of their own.

There are solutions that could light a path toward a more sustainable and fair farm economy, but farmers can’t awkwardly put them together before us. We at the NYFC need broad support as we urge Congress to increase farmland conservation, as we push for immigration reform, and as we seek policies that will ensure the success of a diverse and ambitious next generation of farmer from all backgrounds. With a new farm bill to be debated in Congress, consumers must take a stand with young farmers.

【1】Why does the author mention car industry at the beginning of the passage?

A.To introduce the progress made in car industry.

B.To introduce a special feature of agriculture.

C.To introduce a trend of development in agriculture.

D.To introduce the importance of investing in car industry.

【2】What does the author want to illustrate with the example in paragraph 2?

A.Loans to small local farmers are necessary.

B.Technology is vital for agricultural development.

C.Competition between small and big farm is fierce.

D.Small farmers may gain some advantages over big ones.

【3】What is the difficulty for those new farmers?

    A.To gain more financial aid.

    B.To hire good farm managers.

C.To have farms of their own.

    D.To win old farmers’ support.

【4】What should farmers do for a more sustainable and fair farm economy?

    A.Seek support beyond NYFC.

    B.Expand farmland conservation.

    C.Become members of NYFC.

    D.Invest more to improve technology.

  • 25、Bringing Mosquitoes Under Control

Every year, hundreds of thousands of people die of mosquito-borne diseases like malaria and dengue fever. Drug treatments are ________, and, despite decades of effort, vaccines have, for many of these diseases, proven to be difficult to develop.

It is better, then, to stop these infections happening in the first place by ________ doing away with the mosquitoes that carry the diseases. CRISPR-Cas9, a new and powerful genetic-engineering process, could help to do just that.

Craig Montell, of the University of California, and his colleagues have used CRISPR to ________ an existing control method called the sterile insect technique (SIT), which involves releasing lots of sterilized (绝育的) males into the wild. Females that mate with these males produce no young. ________ releases can reduce populations dramatically. SIT has been used in North America to eliminate screwworm flies, an agricultural pest.

SIT has been tried on mosquitoes, too, but with less ________. One reason seems to be the side-effects of the procedure. To sterilize them, males are exposed to poisonous chemicals. This works, but it damages them in other ways, too. The result can be sickly individuals that ________ to compete in the mating game with wild mosquitoes.

Montell and his colleagues hoped that CRISPR might offer a(n) ________. Their first step was to look for genes which affect fertility (可繁殖性) in mosquitoes. They began their hunt in fruit flies and ended up focusing on a gene that, when ________, made male fruit flies sterile. The gene was present in a similar form in their target mosquito species, Aedes aegypti, which passes on, among other illnesses, yellow fever, dengue and the Zika virus. Disabling the ________ gene in male Aedes likewise left them infertile. ________, the genetic changes involved did not appear to affect the engineered mosquitoes in any other way. On every measure of ________, they performed as well as wild mosquitoes.

________ the details are not fully understood, once female mosquitoes have mated a few times, they become unwilling to do so again. Mating with an infertile male is, therefore, not only fruitless in itself, but should also leave a female less interested in ________ males.

There is more work to be done before field trials, but having established the ________, Montell is excited to see where the work might lead. That the engineered males leave no young means that there are fewer worries surrounding any ________ consequences which might arise from the release of millions of genetically edited creatures into the environment. And that the target gene is found in both fruit flies and Aedes suggests it is likely to exist in other disease-carrying mosquitoes, too.

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

His father said, "All set, boy?" and Johnson nodded, picking up his gun with, awkward gloved bands. His father pushed open the door end they went out into the freezing dawn together.

Ordinarily Johnson would take out his camera to record the scenery, but not this morning. This was the morning, particularly sacred, when 14-year-old Johnson would go duck hunting for the first time.

However, he hated it, and had hated the whole idea since his father bought him a gun. But he was determined to go through with it. He loved his father, and wanted his approval more than anything in the world.

They came to a narrow and hidden place facing the bay. Johnson sat down nervously and waited. To reduce fear he took a picture of his father against the clean water. Then he put the camera hurriedly on the grass and picked up his gun.

Johnson got his gun ready. "I'll let you shoot first," his father said, loading his own gun. "You know, I've been waiting for a long time for this day. Just the two of us…" He broke off, bending forward, eyes narrowed. "There's a small fight heading this way now. Keep your head down. I'll give you the word”.

The sun came out. Johnson could see everything clearly: his father's face, tense and eager, the white frost on the gun. His heart was beating wildly. He prayed, "Don't let them come, please!"

But they kept coming. "Four black," his father said. "One mallard (绿头鸭)." High above, Johnson heard the pulsing whistle of wings as the fight began to circle. The mallard was leading, his feet dropping down, reaching for the silver-colored water. Closer, clos…"Get set," his father whispered.

"Now!” cried Johnson's father. "Take them!”

Johnson felt his body obey. He stood up, holding the gun. In the same instant, the wild ducks saw the gunners and flew. "Shoot!" said something sharply in Johnson's brain. But up went the mallard higher still, until suddenly it caught the full force of the wind and flew away, out of range.

    注意:

    1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

    2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。

His father asked in a controlled voice, "Why didn't you shoot?"
