二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Maitland Jones Jr. is one of the nation’s top organic chemistry professors. He taught the subject for decades, first at Princeton and then at New York University, and wrote an influential textbook. He received awards for his teaching, as well as recognition as one of NYU’s coolest professors.

But last spring, as the campus emerged from pandemic restrictions, 82 of his 350 students signed a petition (请愿书) against him. Students said the course-negatively known for ending many students’ dream of medical school-was too hard, blaming Dr. Jones for their poor test scores. “We are very concerned about our scores, and find that they are not an accurate reflection of the time and effort put into this class,” the petition said. “A class with such a high percentage of withdrawals and low grades has failed to make students’ learning and well-being a priority and reflects poorly on the chemistry department.”

Dr. Jones, 84, who pioneered a new method of instruction that relied more on problem solving, defended his standards. “Students were misreading exam questions at an astonishing rate,” he wrote to the university. Grades fell even as he reduced the difficulty of his exams. After several years of Covid learning loss,   the students not only didn’t study, they didn’t seem to know how to study.

The officials decided to end the contract with Jones and offered the students a chance to review their grades and withdraw from the class.

The university’s handling of the petition set off equal and opposite reactions from both the chemistry professors and pro-Jones students. “They are obviously going for some bottom line, and they want happy students who are saying great things about the university so more people apply and the U.S. News rankings keep going higher,” said Paramjit Arora, a chemistry professor.

“I don’t want my job back,” Dr. Jones said, adding that he had planned to retire soon anyway.“I just want to make sure this doesn’t happen to anyone else.”

    C.School pandemic restrictions.

    D.Their academic performance.

【3】Why did the NYU dismiss Jones according to Paramjit Arora?

    A.To satisfy the students.

    B.To make the headlines.

  • 22、Fencing or Not

Wildlife fences are constructed for a variety of reasons including to prevent the spread of diseases, to protect wildlife from poachers(偷猎者), and to help manage small populations of threatened species. Human-wildlife conflict is another common reason for building fences. Wildlife can damage valuable farm animals and crops. Some species carry diseases of agricultural concern, and a few threaten human lives. At the same time, people kill wild animals for food, trade, or to defend lives or property, and human activities destroy wildlife habitat(栖息地). Separating people and wildlife by fencing can appear to be a mutually beneficial way to avoid such harmful effects. But in a paper in the journal Science, published recently, some scientists argue that fencing should only be used if worse comes to worst.

According to the scientists, although fencing can have conservation benefits, it also has costs. When areas of wildlife habitat are changed into islands, the resulting small and isolated populations tend towards extinction, and the resulting loss of larger-bodied species can affect interactions between species in ways that cause further local extinctions. Therefore, scientists are asking that conservationists carefully weigh up the biodiversity costs and benefits of new and existing fences.

In addition to fences’ ecosystem-wide impact, the scientists don’t think they always achieve their specific aims. Construction of fences to reduce human-wildlife conflict has been successful in some places but the challenges of appropriate fence design, location, construction, and protection mean that fences often fail to deliver the anticipated benefits. In some places, fences also provide poachers with a ready supply of wire for making traps.

A variety of alternative approaches, including better caring for farm animals, community-based crop-guarding, insurance and wildlife-sensitive land-use planning are suggested to reduce conflicts between people and wildlife without the need for fencing. Some projects working with local people and government agencies in Indonesia have shown that human-elephant conflict can be dramatically reduced without using fences.

The scientists conclude that as climate change increases the importance of facilitating wildlife mobility and conserving landscape connectivity, fence removal may become an important form of climate change preparation, and so fencing of wildlife should be avoided whenever possible.

【1】What does the underlined word mutually in Paragraph 1 probably mean________?

    A. Indeed. B. Outdoors. C. Straight.   D. Both.

【2】According to the scientists, what will fencing influence______?

    A. Land building.

    B. Species diversity.

    C. Human population.

    D. Wildlifes body size.

【3】What is mainly discussed in Paragraph 4_______?

    A. Replacements for fences.

    B. Wildlife-protection methods.

    C. Effective land-use approaches.

    D. Conflicts between human and wildlife

【4】The main purpose of the passage is to ________.

    A. argue and prove

    B. inform and explain

    C. appeal and discuss

    D. compare and assess

  • 23、“If I only had a little humility, I’d be perfect,” the media giant Ted Turner supposedly said sometime in the 1990s. Why be modest? Aristotle said: “All men by nature desire to know.” Intellectual humility is a particular instance of humility, since you can be down-to-earth about most things but still ignore your mental limitations.

Intellectual humility means recognising that we don’t know everything. Actually, it means we should acknowledge that we're probably biased in our belief about just how much we understand and seek out the sources of wisdom that we lack.

The Internet and digital media have created the impression of limitless knowledge at our fingertips. But, by making us lazy, they have opened up a space that ignorance can fill. The psychologist Tania Lombrozo of the University of California explained how technology enhances our illusions (错觉) of wisdom. She argues that the way we access information is critical to our understanding—and the more easily we can recall an image, word or statement, the more likely we’ll think we’ve successfully learned it, and so withdraw from effortful cognitive processing. Logical puzzles presented in an unfriendly font (字体), for example, can encourage someone to make extra effort to solve them. Yet this approach runs counter to the nice designs of the apps and sites that populate our screens, where our brain processes information in a “smooth” way. What about all the information that presents online? Well, your capacity to learn from it depends on your attitudes. Intellectually humble people don’t hide or ignore their weaknesses. In fact, they see them as sources of personal development, and use arguments as an opportunity to refine their views. People who are humble by nature tend to be more open-minded and quicker to resolve disputes, since they recognise that their own opinions might not be valid.

At the other end of the scale lies intellectual arrogance. Such arrogance almost always originates from the egocentric bias – the tendency to overestimate their own virtue or importance, ignoring the role of chance or the influence of other people’s actions on their lives. This is what makes these people credit success to themselves and failure to circumstance. From an evolutionary perspective, intellectual arrogance can also be seen as a way of achieving dominance through forcing one’s view on others. Intellectually arrogant people hardly invest mental resources in discussion or working towards group consensus, thus making it hard for groups to work successfully.

The Thrive Center for Human Development in California, which seeks to help young people turn into successful adults, is funding a series of major studies about intellectual humility. Their hypothesis is that humility, curiosity and openness are key to a fulfilling life. “Without humility, you are unable to learn,” Laszlo Bock, Google’s Head of People Operations, notes.

【1】The passage is mainly about ______.

A.the harm arrogance does to us

B.the key elements to a fulfilling life

    C.the significance of intellectual humility

D.the way people access information online

【2】Technology enhances our illusions of wisdom because it ______.

    A.enables people to think critically

    B.offers too much unreliable information

C.allows easy access to abundant information

D.makes it hard for people to recall information

    【3】According to Para.3, intellectually humble people ______.

A.value others’ opinions more than their own

B.use online information to better themselves

C.are unwilling to show their strengths

    D.prefer to solve difficult problems

【4】The author will probably agree that ______.

A.intellectual arrogance is the result of evolution

B.intellectually arrogant people often lack team spirits

C.successful people are often unaware of their limitations

D.circumstances don’t favor intellectually arrogant people
