二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、The icy waters surrounding Antarctica have long been called the Southern Ocean by scientists, the media, and even the US Board on Geographical Names. However, it never received the official recognition it deserved—until now. On June 8, 2021, the National Geographic Society, which has been making maps since 1915, announced that from now on, there would be five oceans: the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian. Arctic, and Southern Ocean.

They had been considering making the change for many years. However, it is only recently that the geographers decided that the Southern Ocean was not just an extension of the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans. It had the unique characteristics required to deserve its own name.

Alex Tait, a geographer, says that the change reflects the Society's desire to draw public attention to protecting the Southern Ocean's unique and fragile marine (海洋的) ecosystem. "We've always labeled it, but we labeled it slightly differently than other oceans," Tait explains. "This change was taking the last step and saying we want to recognize it because of its ecological separation."

The new ocean will include most of the waters around Antarctica out to 60 degrees south latitude, excluding (排除) the Drake Passage and the Scotia Sea. Unlike the other oceans, whose boundaries are defined (界定) by the surrounding continents, the extent of the Southern Ocean is determined by the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) — the Earth's longest and strongest oceanic current.

The ACC was established 34 million years ago when Antarctica broke off from South America, enabling the water to freely flow around Earth's southernmost tip. Its water is colder and less salty than the ocean waters to the north and provides a unique habitat for thousands of species, including whales, penguins, and seals. Extending from the surface to the ocean floor, the ACC also significantly impacts Earth's climate. The powerful current, which draws in water from the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans, acts like a carrier allocating heat around the planet.

【1】Why is the Southern Ocean recognized?

A.It has no clear land boundaries.

B.It extends into the Pacific Ocean.

    C.It has been separated ecologically.

D.It is home to various marine species.

【2】How is the Southern Ocean defined?

    A.By an oceanic current.

B.By its 60 degrees south latitude.

    C.By its marine ecosystem.

    D.By the surrounding continents.

【3】What does the underlined word "allocating" in the last paragraph mean?

    A.Distributing.

    B.Absorbing.

    C.Providing.

    D.Storing.

【4】What is the main idea of the text?

    A.The geography has changed sharply

B.Earth now officially has five oceans.

C.A new ocean is appearing on the earth.

D.You have to change your concept about ocean.

  • 22、Is any economist so dull as to criticize Christmas? At first glance, the holiday season in western economies seems a treat for those concerned with such vagaries(奇思迅想)as GDP growth. After all, everyone is spending; in America, retailers make 25% of their yearly sales and 60% of their profits between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Even so, economists find something to worry about in the nature of the purchases being made.

Much of the holiday spending is on gifts for others. At the simplest level. giving gifts involves the gives thinking of something that the recipient would like-he tries to guess her preferences, as economists say-and then buying the gift and delivering it. Yet this guessing of preferences is not easy; indeed, it is often done badly. Every year, ties go unworn and books unread. And even if a gift is enjoyed, it may not be what the recipient would have bought if they had spent the money themselves.

Interested in this mismatch between wants and gifts,in 1993 Joel Waldfogel, then an economist at Yale University, sought to estimate the difference in dollar terms. In a study, he asked students two questions at the end of a holiday season: first, estimate the total amount paid(by the givers) for all the holiday gifts you received; second. apart from the sentimental value of the items, if you did not have them, how much would you be willing to pay to get them? His results were gloomy: on average, a gift was valued by the recipient well below the price paid by the giver.

In addition, recipients may not know their own preferences very well. Some of the best gifts after all,are unexpected items that you would never have thought of buying, but which turn out to be especially well picked. And preferences can change. So by giving a jazz CD, for example, the giver may be encouraging the recipient to enjoy something that was ignored before. This, a desire to build skills, is possibly the hope held by many parents who ignore their children's desires for video games and buy them books instead.

Finally, there are items that a recipient would like to receive but not purchase. If someone else buys them, however, they can be enjoyed guilt-free. This might explain the volume of chocolate that changes over the holidays. Thus, the lesson for gift-givers is that you should try hard to guess the preference of each person on your list and then choose a gift that will have high sentimental value.

【1】The word “sentimental" in Paragraph 3 is close to________.

    A.intelligent

    C.social

    D.practical

A.The best gifts are well picked by the givers.

B.The gift-giver tries to ignore the actual needs of the receiver

C.You have to take money into consideration when giving a gift

D.In gift-giving, guessing preferences is often a failure, so it's the thought that counts.

    A.users' handbook

    B.medical journal

  • 23、Different responses to “Person of the Year” (2020) in America

Despite all the tragedy and pain that COVID 19 has caused and for which it will be remembered, we must also admit with some irony that without the virus, Donald Trump would very likely be President of the U. S. for the next four years. The old saying that not all bad comes to hurt us proved once again to be true. Biden and Harris alone will not be the cure for the disasters of the past Administration, but at least they are a starting point for a brighter future.

    Alberto Vezzali,

    GUASTALLA, ITALY

This was Time’s opportunity to honor, recognize and thank the heroes on the front line. Given their strength of character and insight on the human condition, Biden and Harris would have been the first to support naming frontline workers as Person of the Year.

    S. Jeffrey Bastable,

    FAYETTEVILLE, N. Y.

It is incomprehensible that you did not select as Person of the Year the tens of thousands of health care workers who went into work each day and put their lives at risk to take care of COVID-19 patients. They were the firemen running into the burning building to save others, and the policemen running toward the gunfire. Many of them fell ill, and indeed, some died.

    Louis Shepard,

    NEW ORLEANS

“Person” is singular. When Trump was named Person of the Year last year, it wasn’t a Trump-Pence cover. Is this just a subtle reminder to the American people that Harris is the real person in charge?

    Alan Lantz,

    BELLA VISTA, ARK.

Everyone hopes Biden and Harris can do better than their predecessors did, but unfortunately, naming them Person of the Year is a politicized decision, and I am very sad about that.

    Paolo Grassi,

    CONCOREZZO, ITALY

【1】Who were chosen as “Person of the Year” in 2020 in America?

    A.Biden and Harris.

    B.Trump and Pence.

    C.Obama and Biden.

    D.Harris and Trump.

【2】What is Alan Lantz’s attitude to the choice of 2020?

    A.supportive.

    B.neutral.

    C.indifferent.

    D.doubtful.

【3】Who shares Louis Shephard’s opinion on the right choice of “Person of the Year”?

    A.Alberto Vezzali.

    B.S. Jeffrey Bastable.

    C.Alan Lantz.

    D.Paolo Grassi.

  • 24、As night falls on the streets of Shanghai, Mikiko Chen can often be found pacing up and down through the winding narrow streets of the city hunting for discarded items.

“I pick up all sorts of things, chairs, wine boxes, bowls and cups. . . it’s like treasure hunting for me, “she says. The 27-year-old digital marketer is among the first adopters of “stooping” in China, a practice that refers to picking up discarded furniture and other goods on the streets for re-use. She says the concept “stooping” was inspired by New Yorkers who often leave unwanted things on the “stoops” —or doorsteps—leading up to the entrances of buildings.

“The core concept of stooping for me is to make the best use of things,” Ms. Chen says. “It can help you to save money, but it’s not just about lowering consumption.” “It’s wasteful to throw away something that’s still usable; it’s better to share it with others who need it.”

Ms. Chen says she was among the first to use the hashtag (话题标签) #stooping on Xiaohongshu. “I initially started with posting items that people no longer used and wanted to throw away or exchange . . gradually I’m receiving hundreds of messages each day,” she says. Since then, the trend has become increasingly popular.

Ms. Chen says she is “very surprised” the concept has become a hit on social media, as older generations often stigmatize picking up things from the street or using second-hand goods. “People like my mum consider stooping as ‘rubbish picking’ and ‘scavenging’ (拾荒),” she says. “She thinks that people will look down on you for doing this.”

For Nan Zheng, an environmentalist and advocate, stooping is more than the physical act of picking up things from the streets. He created an app called “Grecycle” where people can give away or take unwanted items for free. “I think we can let more people know about the concept of stooping as an interesting and fun thing to do,” Mr. Nan says. “But then, gradually we can let people know this can also be about charity and helping others.”

C.The older are exposed to stooping.
