二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、You're stuck in a sea of standstill traffic when it begins: hunger pangs, the kind that release a steady stream of fast food fantasizing. With your grumbling stomach growing louder, your options are limited: You can wait a few hours for the roadways to clear or pull a Michael Douglas in the movie Falling Down, leaving your car idling on the freeway while you set off on foot (please don't do this).

Now Burger King, is betting that hungry drivers will welcome a third option: a direct-to-driver; delivery concept the company has labeled the "Traffic, Jam Whoopper."

Reached by email, Gustavo Lauria, co-founder of the advertising agency We Believers, which developed the vehicle delivery concept, said the new approach allows the burger chain to capitalize on a time of day in which the city's terrible traffic typically slows business. "This was an opportunity for Burger King to generate new profits out of those hungry drivers," Lauria added.

Lauria claims Burger King is the first fast food brand to deliver food to people in the middle of a traffic jam. In Mexico City, the company said, delivery drivers are already receiving an average of 7,000 orders per day, mostly to homes and offices. To make the traffic jam delivery process possible. Burger King's Mexico app activities the service after identifying crowded areas in Mexico City during periods of high traffic. Customers can only place an order if the app determines that the driver will be locked in traffic for at least 30 minutes and they are within a 1.8-mile distance of a Burger King restaurant, the company said.

Early on, Lauria wrote, the initiative was met with skepticism. The challenges were complex: making sure real-time geolocation data was accurate enough, and the creation of a hands-free way to take orders on cellphones in a country that has adopted serious punishment for drivers who use cellphones behind the wheel.

Though the company did not offer a timeline, Burger King says it expects to roll out the Traffic Jam Whopper in other overcrowded cities, such as Los Angeles, Sao Paulo and Shanghai.

【1】What does the "Traffic Jam Whopper"(paragraph 2) refer to?

A.A proposal intended to ease the traffic jam during peak hours.

B.An initiative which allows drivers to have food delivered directly to their cars.

C.A platform which makes it convenient for drivers to order food via cellphones.

D.An association supervising whether drivers are observing traffic rules.

【2】Burger King is launching the Traffic Jam Whopper mainly to ________.

    A.promote its corporate culture

B.make a shift in its sales pattern

C.achieve an increase in its profit

D.expand its business into more cities

【3】What can be inferred from the passage?

A.The Traffic Jam Whopper poses a threat to the safety of pedestrians.

B.Drivers will be allowed to type on their cellphones during traffic jams.

C.Technological barriers may block the traffic jam delivery process

D.Drivers can instantly choose to activate Burger King's app.

【4】Burger King is ________about the Traffic Jam Whopper.

    A.cautious

    B.ambitious

    C.doubtful

    D.concerned

  • 22、Children who spend more time outdoors may have a lower risk of becoming nearsighted, new research suggests.

In the study, researchers looked at about 1,900 schoolchildren. The scientists found that the kids who had been instructed to spend more time outdoors over three years were 23 percent less likely to develop nearsightedness during this time than those who had not been instructed to spend more time outdoors. Moreover, among the kids who did become nearsighted during the study, the degree to which their eyesight worsened was slightly smaller among those who spent more time outdoors.

The researchers selected six schools and required the children, whose average age was 7 at the start of the study, to attend one additional 60-minute class of outdoor activities during each school day for three years. The parents of these children were also encouraged to engage their children in outdoor activities after school, especially during weekends and holidays. The other half of the children, from another six schools, continued their usual activity patterns. After three years, 30.4 percent of the kids in the intervention(干预) group had become nearsighted, compared with 38.5 percent of the kids in the other group.

It is not clear exactly why spending more time outside would benefit children’s eyesight, the researchers said. However, some research has suggested that the higher levels of light intensity found outdoors may increase the release of the chemical dopamine(多巴胺) of the eye. In turn, dopamine is known to restrain(抑制) the type of growth in the eye that is associated with nearsightedness.

Based on the new results, the researchers recommend that children spend more time outdoors because of the potential benefits to their eyesight. However, it’s important to protect kids’ skin and eyes from UV light, which can be damaging.

1What did the children in the intervention group do during each school day?

    A. Attend an extra class of outdoor activities.

    B. Continue to do their usual activities.

    C. Spend one hour in doing eye exercises.

    D. Participate in outdoor activities with parents.

2What can be inferred about the chemical dopamine?

    A. It can contribute to poor sight.

    B. It can damage people’s brain.

    C. It is beneficial to eyesight.

    D. It means low levels of light intensity.

3What may be discussed in the following paragraph?

    A. How to design outdoor activities for kids.

    B. How to prevent kids becoming nearsighted.

    C. How to protect kids’ skin and eyes from UV light.

    D. How to encourage kids to join in outdoor activities.

4Which can serve as the best title for the passage?

    A. The More Time Outdoors, the Better

    B. Kids May See Better if They Play Outside

    C. It’s Time to Engage Kids in Outdoor Activities

    D. Researchers Found a Cure for Nearsightedness

  • 23、   Last night, when I went to see my grandmother, she was sitting alone at the nurse station with her word search book. My grandmother was sitting at the desk with her book but no pencil just staring at the letters as if she was trying to find the word. I came to her and said hello.

Usually, she at least knows I am connected to her somehow but this time, she looked at me with doubt. I introduced myself and told her that I was her granddaughter. “I don’t know who you are,” she said.” Do you want to go outside?” I asked. “okay,” she said.

We got her things and I wrapped it all in a blanket we would use as a tablecloth. I asked her if she could hold it while I pushed her wheelchair and held her cup of tea.

She held her hands out and I placed the cloth bundle () on her lap. I put the cloth on the table and she helped smooth it down-then I put the rest of the items on the cloth..

Now she was just staring at me as if confused, as if trying to figure me out. “Do you know who I am?” I asked. She said, “I don’ t really know.”“ I am your granddaughter,” I said. “I am not sure what that is. I don’t know, I don’t know you,” she said.

I think of my friend whose mother has not known him for years, has no recollection (记忆), and doesn’t speak any more. It is a painful sight for all those living who remember. I am grateful that my grandmother is still so present. I have a sinking feeling that our days are numbered.

For now, she is still here, still says thank you, and still loves me from a deep and secret place. Tomorrow, I will see her and she may or may not know me-and that will be okay. I still know her.

  • 24、National Poetry Month is to bring about awareness and appreciation of poetry. Some of the goals include reading poems, writing poems and helping teachers bring poetry into the classroom. Here are some activities in National Poetry Month.

    Recite Poetry to a Pet

We’ve come up with some fun exercises to get you into the spirit of creative expression. You can recite poetry to a pet by changing the sound or speaking loudly and clearly enough to communicate without explanations. Doing this can not only help strengthen public speaking ability but also deepen your understanding of a particular piece.

    Become a Romantic

Do you ever notice how beautiful the nature is? There are so many wonderful poems which have been inspired by the seasons, celebrating the beauty of a snowflake or the spring sunshine awakening the plants and animals. Why not become a poet yourself and share the beauty you saw in the nature with others?

    Act out a Poem

Many poets find it hard to share their words because what they write about are personal subjects. But not all poetry is about emotions. Poetry is a living force that can be very powerful when it is shown both as a performance and as words on social media.

    Poetry by Heart

We take pleasure in reading or hearing something that reflects what is in our minds or in our hearts. We experience relief if it expresses feelings we’ve kept bottled up. Similarly, reciting a poem to yourself or to someone else can be very rewarding. Sometimes it’s easier to say how we feel with someone else’s words than our own, especially if they’re put together beautifully.

【1】The main purpose of the National Poetry Month is to help people ____________.

A.appreciate the beauty of old poetry.

B.combine poetry with their daily life.

C.learn more about poetry and enjoy it.

D.get creative ideas to celebrate poetry.

【2】What does Become a Romantic encourage people to do?

A.Adjust to the changing of the seasons.

B.Find and enjoy the beauty of nature.

    C.Get inspiration from beautiful seasons.

D.Try to write and share their own poems.

【3】How does the author introduce the activity of Poetry by Heart?

    A.By presenting its benefit.

    B.By showing the reciting process.

C.By explaining the way of doing it.

D.By giving tips on reciting a poem.
