二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、When you swim in the sea, have you ever accidentally drunk the seawater? How did it feel? It must have tasted salty. So, why is the seawater salty?

Seawater is water that comes from the ocean. Seawater is salty because it contains an average salt content of 2.5%. So the ocean is a place for the salt farmers to produce cooking salt and other salt.

Some theories explain that seawater comes from rainwater that falls and flows through rivers and estuaries (河口) and then the seawater fully fills the sea and again forms clouds because of evaporation (蒸发). When we talk about this, we talk about the rainwater cycle. But when the rainwater cycle occurs, the water that passes through the river carries mineral salts. These mineral salts are obtained from various places of the land starting from rocks and soils that the rainwater flows through. These mineral salts make seawater salty, so the salinity of seawater is different in each part of the world. But it is certain that seawater is salty or has high salinity.

The saltiest sea in the world is the Red Sea. There the temperature is extremely high so that evaporation happens frequently. High evaporation coupled with little rainfall and little input of water from the river causes its highest level of salinity. There is also the Dead Sea, which is about nine times saltier than the Red Sea. Due to the high salinity, when you swim there, you can float. However, the Dead Sea is not a sea at all, which is a lake geographically.

【1】What’s the purpose of Paragraph 1?

    A.To draw a conclusion.

    B.To bring in the topic.

    C.To introduce a famous sea.

    D.To make the article interesting.

【2】Where does the salt in seawater originate from?

    A.Land.

    B.Ocean.

    C.Rain.

    D.Cloud.

【3】What can we know about the Red Sea?

A.Its salinity is higher than that of the Dead Sea.

B.The climate there causes the highest salt level.

C.People are in danger when swimming there.

D.The land around it contains the most salt.

【4】Which is the most suitable title for the text?

A.The reason why the seawater tastes salty

B.The reason why the Dead Sea is not a sea

C.The reason why the rainwater cycle occurs

D.The reason why the sea looks blue and green

  • 22、You go to a gym to train your muscles. You run or hike to build your endurance. 【1】 Training it could not only speed up your memory recall, but also help you learn faster. Try some of the following basic methods to work your mental powers.

Sleep, it turns out, is a very important factor when keeping your mind in tip-top shape. Any lack of rest or relaxation, and excessive stress can seriously reduce the efficiency of your brain function. The human brain requires a large amount of energy to function. 【2】 So, make sure you get enough shut-eye!

Don’t underestimate (低估) the power of reading. Reading can improve your mind. Reading also improves your general knowledge, making you more capable of holding conversations and relating concepts. 【3】 While this might not be possible for you, you really should carve out time to read for at least an hour a day.

【4】 Getting into the habit of constantly taking notes or writing down things or ideas effectively creates an extension of your mind. By daily recording your thoughts, you will enable yourself to think more clearly and thoroughly. One of those random thoughts could be your path to freedom and fortune.

A change is as good as a rest. New experiences force your brain to grow new pathways. 【5】 Your days were a constant trial and error exercise. Each and every experience strengthens the neural (神经的) pathways and makes a task much easier until it becomes second nature.

A.A persistent lack of sleep also can reduce your IQ.

B.Listening to music makes you smart.

C.But what can you do to train your brain?

D.Think about when you were a small child.

F.Go to your school library and study more.

G.It is said that highly successful people read, on average, one book a week.

  • 23、   We all agree, surely – memorizing poetry is a good thing, and children ought to do it. But people do object. At least, they object to the idea that children should be forced to learn poetry. They tend to be people like Michael Rosen. Rosen has more practical objections to children having to learn poetry by the government’s order. Actually, Rosen is all for learning poetry, “when it feels right”, which is, he says, “one of those vague phrases much hated by people in authority and yet it is at the heart of good teaching”.

He’s onto something about the timing, but that doesn’t mean policymakers are wrong to insist on pupils learning poetry. The problem is that some influential educationists have come to see learning by heart as a waste of time when tomorrow’s adults will want skills more than information.

Let’s come to the most important objectors–children. Their objection tends to come in the least offensive form. It comes in the question: “Why are we doing this?” It’s a worthwhile inquiry. I teach at Sherborne School, where boys do learn poetry; and luckily there’s time in our lessons to answer that question.

Here’s one of the answers I give. There’ll be one time when your good friend is going to introduce you to someone with whom he wants to spend the rest of his life. There’ll be a ceremony to honour this union, and words will be very important. You’re likely to be the one who has to stand up and say, “Let me not to the marriage of true minds/ Admit impediment…” And when you do that, you’re going to be speaking for everyone in the room. Now, everybody breathes sigh of relief.

Learning poetry and reciting poetry forces us to think of it in this public way. However mysterious and intimate poetry seems, we need to remember it’s something we also share, and offer each other. So take some, and pass it on.

1What does the underlined word “it” in the first paragraph refer to?

    A.The right timing.

    B.The poetry with vague phrases.

    C.The government’s order.

D.The natural way to learn poetry.

2Which of the following would be favored by some influential educationists?

A.To guide children how to recite poetry.

B.To instruct children on how to get information.

C.To teach students real life skills for the future.

D.To force children to obey the government policy.

3As for the children’s question, the teacher should _______.

A.consider it offensive B.take it seriously C.dismiss it as worthless D.discuss it after class

4What’s the writer’s attitude towards poetry learning?

    A.Objective. B.Supportive. C.Critical D.Disapproving.

  • 24、People with an impulsive personality refer to those who tend to do things without considering the possible dangers or problems first. According to a new study by researchers at the University of Georgia, such people may be more likely to have food addiction. The study found that people exhibiting impulsive behavior weren’t necessarily overweight, but impulsiveness was related to a direct relationship with food, and therefore, less healthy weight.

Food addiction has been compared to addictive drug use. Studies have linked the dopamine (多巴胺) release that occurs after tasting delicious food to the dopamine release that happens when people consume other addictive substances.

Impulsive behavior involves several personality traits (特点). Two of these traits, known as negative urgency and lack of perseverance, were particularly associated with food addiction and high BMI (身体质量指数) during the study.

Negative urgency is characterized by the tendency to behave impulsively when experiencing negative emotions. Some people might drink alcohol or take drugs. For others, it could mean eating to feel better. Lack of perseverance is when a person has a hard time finishing hard or boring tasks. People with a lack of perseverance might have difficulty attempting to change addictive eating behavior, which could also cause obesity.

“Impulsiveness might be one reason why some people eat in an addictive way despite motivation to lose weight,” said Dr. Ashley Gearhardt, a clinical psychologist. He was involved in developing the Yale Food Addiction Scale in aid of those people. “We are theorizing that if food addiction is really a thing, then our measure, the Yale Food Addiction Scale, should be related to helping control impulsive action,” said Gearhardt.

Clinical psychologist Dr. James MacKillop, whose lab was conducting the study, believes that therapies used to treat addictive drug behavior could help people who suffer from addictive eating habits.

“Most of the programs for weight loss at this point focus on the most obvious things, which are clearly diet and exercise,” MacKillop said. “It seems that managing strong desires to eat would naturally fit in with the skills a person would need to eat healthily.”

1According to Paragraph 1, the result of food addiction is ________.

    A. less healthy weight

    B. motivation to lose weight

    C. negative emotions

    D. taking alcohol or drugs

2How does the author introduce the two personality traits in Paragraph 4?

    A. By making comparisons and conclusions.

    B. By explaining causes and effects.

    C. By presenting questions and answers.

    D. By giving definitions and examples.

3What can be inferred about the Yale Food Addiction Scale from the text?

    A. It has been successfully carried out among overweight people.

    B. It might help some impulsive people with food addiction to lose weight.

    C. It will prove whether food addiction is a problem to impulsive people.

    D. It is theoretically a proper treatment for addictive food and drug behavior.

4Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

    A. Dopamine release caused by food addiction

    B. Food addiction compared to drug use

    C. Impulsive personality linked to food addition

    D. Food addiction contributing to obesity
