22、Restaurants in the USA
Steve’s Pizza
So many pizza chains compete for the attention of tourists in South Beach, but ask a Miami Beach local where to get the best pizza and they’ll tell you about Steve’s. This is New York–style pizza, handmade with care and good ingredients(成份). New branches of Steve’s are opening elsewhere in Miami, all in non-tourist areas.
Opening hours: 11am-3am
Cattleman’s Steakhouse
This place is 20 miles east of the city, but local folks would probably drive 200 miles to eat here. The food is good, and the scenery is even better. Come early and wander around the grounds of Indian Cliffs Ranch, where you’ll see everything from rabbits to buffalo (水牛), then catch the sunset either before or after your meal.
Opening hours: 5pm-10pm
Absolute Baking & Cafe
The screen door is always swinging open at this town hot spot with giant breakfasts. Try the green chili on eggs – it’s made from scratch, as are the organic(有机的) breads. Lunch includes salads, big sandwiches and local grass-fed beef burgers. Don’t miss a square of soft, fresh carrot cake.
Opening hours: 7am-2pm
Walt’s Wharf
Everybody’s favorite for fresh fish (some drive in from LA), Walt’s packs them in on weekends. You can’t make reservations for dinner (though they’re accepted for lunch), but it’s worth the wait for the tree fire–grilled seafood and steaks in the many-windowed ground floor or upstairs in captain’s chairs.

23、It cost $1,000 for Patricia Qasimah Boston to fly from Tallahassee to Washington and stay in a hotel. She traveled 800 miles for a three-minute appearance at a public hearing held Tuesday by the Council on Environmental Quality, a White House agency that recently proposed to weaken the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).
NEPA was signed into law in 1970 "to create and maintain conditions under which man and nature can exist in productive harmony, and fulfill the social, economic, and other requirements of present and future generations of Americans." It's imitated around the globe by nations hoping to protect public health as well as plants and animals.
Boston, an environmental justice advocate, called the law "a bible" that protects communities across the country by allowing them to challenge the environmental impact of proposed federal projects. Usually the council holds around nine hearings across the country so citizens can comment on policy changes. But this time, it held two.
Boston used her brief time to make an appeal to keep the law intact (完好无损的). "The rollback will limit the ability of my community to know the health consequences of government actions," she said.
Activists and politicians who attended the hearing also denounced (谴责) the inadequate time for public comment and the sharply reduced opportunities for citizens to speak out about a significant public policy change.
Corporate trade representatives who support the proposed changes to NEPA echoed Interior Secretary David Bernhardt's opinion that the law causes unnecessary delays that hold up projects by an average of four years. "The consequences of the government being stuck in place are far-ranging. The reality is that the needless red tape has, over time, lowered the expectations of American excellence. And that is backward," Bernhardt said in January.
"But carving away vital provisions (规定) in the law is unacceptable," said Christy Goldfuss, who chaired the council for two years. "This change will silence communities that could be harmed the most by federal actions," said Goldfuss.
【1】What can we learn about NEPA?
A.It's meant to promote the country's economy.
B.It's been in effect in America for nearly fifty years.
C.It's considered a bible in religious people's eyes.
D.It's a model followed by many other countries.
【2】What do the underlined words "The rollback" in paragraph 4 refer to?
A.The federal proposal to weaken NEPA.
B.The activists' appeal to keep NEPA intact.
C.The inadequate time for public comment.
D.Sharply reduced hearings across the country.
【3】What's David Bernhardt's attitude towards NEPA?
A.Neutral.
B.Favorable.
C.Tolerant.
D.Disapproving.
24、It was the final day of our holiday: I’d gone snowboarding with my little brother and what we lacked in skill we made up for in enthusiasm, catching the first ski lift in the morning and the last lift in the afternoon. That day, we were in high spirits. We stopped near the top of an off-piste section (非滑雪场区域) that went through forests. I’d done this route a few times before and, as I was faster and more experienced, I let my brother disappear into the trees ahead, figuring I would soon catch up.
I began to pick up speed when I was suddenly thrown off balance. I didn’t fall but I lost control of the board. I was unable to turn, instead going in a straight line, gathering speed. Just as I was regaining control, I crashed into the trunk of a large tree.
It was like hitting a concrete pillar (柱子). I didn’t lose consciousness but the pain was felt instantly and overwhelming. I knew pretty much immediately that my back was broken and quickly realised the situation could get very serious. I tried to stand but collapsed and almost blacked out with pain before I got halfway up.
Walking was not an option. Crawling was too slow and painful. I had another idea: I managed to get the board unattached to my feet and moved it under my stomach so I was lying on it. I faced down the mountain and, using the board as a luge (小雪橇), I started to drag and slide my body down the steep, tree-lined slope. I used my arms to stop myself sliding out of control. I descended at a slow jogging pace, trying to slow myself as much as possible.
Eventually, I managed to slide myself on to a cross-country ski path and was given first aid before a helicopter took me to hospital. The recovery road was tough, but months later, I was back doing what I love most.
【1】Why did the author’s brother go into the forest ahead of him?
A.Because the author lacked enthusiasm.
B.Because his brother caught the first ski lift in the morning.
C.Because the author’s competence allowed him to give his brother an advantage.
D.Because the author knew a short route and had done the route a few times before.
【2】What caused the author’s back injury?
A.The overwhelming pain.
B.The crash into a thick trunk.
C.Hitting a concrete pillar.
D.Falling off the uncontrollable board.
【3】How did the author save himself?
A.By sliding his body on the board.
B.By rolling down the steep, tree-lined slope.
C.By dragging the board down the hill with his hands.
D.By using his arms to stop himself sliding out of control.
【4】What can we infer about the author from the last paragraph?
A.His recovery lasted too long to wait.
B.He will find it harder to recover mentally.
C.He saved himself and recovered on his own.
D.He is unwilling to give up his passion easily.
