二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   If you are aiming to master anything quickly, you can learn from Albert Einstein and Richard Feynman. They offer practical advice you can use to improve your learning.

According to Einstein, improving your intellectual capacity should be fun and enjoyable —— happy learners are quick learners. In 1915, he wrote a letter to his 11-year-old son (Hans Albert) who was learning the piano and said:

“I am very pleased that you find joy with the piano. This and carpentry are in my opinion for your age the best pursuits, better even than school, because those are things which fit a young person such as you very well. Mainly play the things on the piano which please you, even if the teacher does not assign those. That is the way to learn the most when you are doing something with such enjoyment that you don’t notice that the time passes.”

To learn anything faster or better, choose topics you will enjoy — if you have control over what you are learning. Make the learning relevant. You should be able to answer the question “Why am I learning this?” at any point.

Richard Feynman won a Nobel Prize and always wanted to know more and to learn more. Known as the “Great Explainer”he was famous for his ability to explain complex topics in simple ways.

The Feynman Technique, his approach to improving learning, features explaining or teaching what you learn to others. It can help you learn better and keep more of what you learn. According to Feynman, it is significant to have the ability to explain things simply — so simple, in fact, that you could explain it to an eight-year-old. Einstein agrees. He once said,  “If you can't explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.”

For thousands of years, people have known that the best way to understand a concept is to explain it to someone else. “While we teach, we learn,” said the Roman philosopher Seneca. Learners keep a greater percentage of what they learn when they explain or teach the concept to someone else, or use it immediately. Your ideas will never be more effective than your ability to make others grasp them. When you share, you remember better.

1Einstein wrote the letter to his son in order to _.

A.encourage Hans to play the piano well

B.share some useful advice on how to play the piano

C.support Hans' learning the piano with enjoyment

D.suggest Hans taking teachers* assignment seriously

2Which of the following is the characteristic of the Feynman Technique?

A.Teaching what you learn to others. B.Explaining your things thoroughly.

C.Choosing enjoyable topics. D.Understanding things well enough.

3Why is the Roman philosopher Seneca mentioned in the last paragraph?

A.To provide advice on how to teach concepts.

B.To illustrate the significance of teaching others.

C.To impress the readers with his meaningful quotes.

D.To show people’s exploration of concepts in history.

4Which of the following might be the best title for the text?

    A.Secrets of Learning Faster.

    B.Benefits of Teaching Others.

    C.Contribution of Great Explainers.

    D.Importance of Learning with Enjoyment.

  • 22、Don’t you think walking in the city is very different from walking in the park?A small psychology study suggests urban environments can slow your step and possibly increase your mental load. 【1】. It can ease your mind and quicken your pace. The findings show that natural settings may potentially reduce cognitive(认知的)tiredness and improve reaction times straight away.【2】

The first of the two experiments in the new study focused on people’s way of walking and cognitive load. During this trial, participants were fitted with sensors and a dozen motion control cameras were set up to watch them repeatedly walk down a 15-metre room at their natural speed. The wall opposite them showed an image of either a nature scene or a city scene.【3】 On the whole, when walking in city settings, people reported that they felt more uncomfortable and they walked at a slower pace, indicating a higher cognitive load.

【4】 Participants were asked to distinguish between basic visual shapes on the computer while also in the presence of a natural or urban image (the same ones from the first experiment).

Measuring reaction times in both natural and urban settings, the team found results to support their idea. In urban environments, participants were slower in distinguishing between simple shapes.【5】Our brains take longer to process. However, more research is needed to prove that idea.

A.Nature influences us in many ways.

B.A walk through nature does the opposite, though.

C.The reason is that urban environments are more distracting.

D.They said they couldn’t concentrate properly after walking.

E.The second dug into some higher-level cognitive processes.

F.After each, participants were asked to rate their discomfort.

G.Different approaches are employed in the separate experiment.

  • 23、Have you ever taken a look at a few lovely chickens and desired to touch and kiss them? Apparently, for some the urge is hard to resist. However, according to an updated warning by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), doing so could spread dangerous-maybe even life-threatening-Salmonella (沙门菌). So no matter how irresistible those little feathered birds may seem, avoid giving them a kiss.

This isn't the first time the CDC has warned against getting your poultry (家禽) fresh. Back in 2018 Halloween, they advised against dressing the birds up for fear of spreading Salmonella. Then again, in May this year, with 474 cases reported, another warning was issued. According to interviews with 271 of those affected, 77 percent had been in contact with poultry before getting sick.

"Backyard poultry, like chicken and ducks, can carry Salmonella bacteria even if they look healthy and clean, " writes the CDC. "These bacteria can easily spread to anything in the areas where the poultry live. You can get sick from touching your poultry or anything in their environment and then touching your mouth or food, and swallowing Salmonella bacteria."

Most people who come into contact with the Salmonella bacteria will experience diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. Children are particularly affected-one in three sick people are below the age of five-intelligible given their weaker immune (免疫) systems and natural love for the birds.

The CDC recommends that parents shouldn't let little children touch chicks, ducks, or other backyard poultry and make sure that if they do, they should wash their hands thoroughly afterward. Likewise, adults are instructed to do the same after touching backyard poultry and their eggs should be cleaned, stored, and cooked correctly to avoid the infection of Salmonella.

This might be easier said than done-for many people, backyard chickens are beloved-but if you really love them, stop physical displays of affection in case you wind up with eggs on your face. It turns out to be a bit of harm.

【1】Why does CDC repeatedly warn people not to kiss chickens?

    A.To protect the poultry.

    B.To show love to chickens.

    C.To get rid of Salmonella.

    D.To stay safe from danger.

【2】How is Paragraph 2 mainly developed?

    A.By giving examples.

    B.By showing statistics.

    C.By making comparison.

    D.By interviewing victims.

【3】What does the underlined word "intelligible" mean in Paragraph 4?

    A.Understandable.

    B.Irresistible.

    C.Disapproval

    D.Controversial.

【4】What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?

    A.Stress the importance of affection.

    B.Add more background information.

C.Provide some advice for the readers.

D.Summarize the theme of the passage.

  • 24、From New York Times: super-achieving moms on Wall Street have househusbands! The report pointed to a tenfold increase (since 1980) in the number of women in finance with stay-at-home husbands, allowing them to achieve success without the distractions of housework and child raising.

【1】 And I don’t doubt the increase in the number of households where husbands and wives are exchanging roles, but this arrangement isn’t really new. The real news is that until recently, noone wanted to admit it.

I’ve been covering the elite(精英) class of big law firms for over 10 years, and I can tell you that many of the women who make it to the top often have a man at home who’s taking care of the kids, planning the meals, and otherwise keeping the fireplace fired up. Indeed, you can go to any number of big firms in New York City where there’s a handful of female partners (the national average for female equity partners has barely surpassed 16%), and the gossip among the associates is that those women in power are either single or married to men who stay at home. “They seem to belong to some sort of househusband club,” said one associate about the female partners with kids.【2】

I sensed that reluctance when I did a story on female partners at big Wall Street firms with househusbands a few years ago. Though three couples were happy to speak to me on the record about their arrangement, many more held back from going public.

Often, successful women are reluctant to admit that their husband is really the one minding the home. “He has primary responsibility for the kids, but he also works on the side,” explained one partner about how her husband spends his time. 【3】 “He’s doing consulting” is a popular explanation.

All of this points to our rooted uncertainty about changing gender roles. Men in these situations often feel alienated (格格不入的),particularly if they are surrounded by stay-at-home moms. 【4】

A.They just didn't like to talk about it.

    B.That formula shouldn’t surprise anyone.

C.We live in a country that doesn’t have much of a safety net for anyone.

D.But when she was pressed about what type of work the husband does, the reply is often vague.

E.This typical arrangement may be more long-lasting if the wife makes an enormous amount of money.

F.But the power moms with the stay-at-home husbands are just as uneasy, often more embarrassed than proud that they’ve upset the traditional order.
