21、 So you think that by staying at home you are safe from all the terrible kinds of pollution present outdoors? Recent research done at the University of Texas has shown that staying indoors may actually be more harmful to one’s health than being outdoors in smoggy cities.
The research shows that chemicals added to our local water supply to kill harmful bacteria can have unwanted side effects. These chemicals can cause potential harm through drinking and in such seemingly harmless activities as cleaning one’s house. These additives are released from water by daily actions like water running out of taps, spraying from garden hoses, or splashing in dishwashers and washing machines. As the water is agitated (搅动), these chemicals are released into the air and then breathed in. Once inside our bodies, they start to affect our health harmfully.
Does this mean we should stop bathing? No, say the scientists, but we should put all pollution into perspective. Activities at home such as the burning of candles and incense release a lot of things which have been proven as harmful to health as working or living near high density traffic. New rugs, bedding, and even clothing give off that “new smell”, which is a sure sign of chemicals. In the office, newly-applied paint, newly-purchased telephones and other telecommunications equipment, and computers and their peripheral (外部设备) release polluting chemicals, too. As offices and homes often have inadequate ventilation (空气流通), these chemicals can build up to become health trouble. Their toxic effects are only now being slowly recognized.
These facts suggest that, at a minimum, proper airing of newly-purchased goods with an obvious chemical smell is a wise precaution. Home and office windows should be opened during good weather to allow a flushing of stale air. Even one’s car needs to be ventilated as well as the garage.
Until we understand the effects of our new technological environment better, we can only hope that “there is no place like home”.

22、 On a comfortable sunny Sunday, I was going to meet an old university friend I hadn't seen for years, and was really excited to hear all his news. My train was running a little late, but that was no big problem 一 I could text him to say I would be delayed. He would understand. But.. . where was my mobile phone? I had that familiar sinking feeling. Yes, I'd left it at home.
No mobile phone . I'm sure I'm not alone in feeling anxious, on edge and worried when I don't have my phone with me. In fact, I know I'm not alone: two-thirds of us experience this “ nomophobia".
That’s according to a study which surveyed 1,000 people in the UK about their relationship with mobile phones, which says we check our mobile phones 34 times a day, that women are more "nomophobic" than men, and that 18-24-year-olds are the most likely to suffer fear of being without their mobiles: 77% of them say they are unable to be apart from their phones for more than a few minutes.
Do you have " Homophobia” ?
•You never turn your phone off.
•You obsessively (着迷似地)check for texts, missed calls and emails.
•You always take your phone to the bathroom with you.
•You never let the battery run out.
It's funny to think that around 20 years ago the only people with mobile phones would be businesspersons carrying their large, plastic "bricks”. Of course, these days, mobile phones are everywhere. Its subscriptions has outnumbered people across the world.
And when there are more phones than people in the world, maybe it's time to ask who really is in charge? Are you in control of your phone, or does your phone control you? So, what happened with my university friend? When I arrived a few minutes late he just laughed and said: "You haven't changed at all 一 still always late!” And we had a great afternoon catching up, full of jokes and stories, with no interruptions and no nagging (唠叨的)desire to check my phone.
Not having it with me felt strangely liberating. Maybe I'll leave it at home on purpose next time.
【1】What does the underlined word "nomophobia" in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.The fear of being out of mobile phone contact.
B.The addiction to keeping mobile phones at hand .
C.The feeling of being alone and left behind.
D.The suffering of being anxious and worried.
【2】We can infer around 20 years ago the mobile phone ________ according to the author.
A.was only afforded by businessmen B.was as heavy as a brick
C.was seldom seen and accepted D.was inconvenient to use
【3】What's the author's attitude towards his experience without mobile phones?
A.Worried. B.Favorable.
C.Neutral. D.Critical.
【4】What's the best title for the passage?
A.The Development of Mobile Phones B.Meeting an Old University Friend
C.Being without My Mobile Phone D.Using Mobile Phones or Not
23、 When I was a kid, I loved reading history, science fiction, detective stories, but especially comics. I had piles of them and kept talking my Dad into making more shelves for me. One day, I read about a 13-year-old boy who had actually written one of my favorite comics, Legion of Super-Heroes, and I said, “I can do that too.” That year, I was two years younger than the writer.
Three years later, a friend and I started our own fan magazine about comics. It became the first place that regularly told people when their favorite comics were coming out and writers and artists were working on them. Because of the magazine, I won the awards for The Comic Reader, but more important, it got many of the people in the field to know who I was.
One day when I was visiting DC Comics for news for my next issue, one of the editors a chance to write text for his comic. Suddenly, at 16, I was getting paid to write.
I was able to pay for my college classes working as an assistant editor at DC Comics and learned how to write comics stories while I was there. I wrote hundreds of stories. Over the years, I worked as an editor and an executive (主管) for the company, eventually serving as a president and publisher, until earlier this year. Now I’m back to my first love, writing comics again.
Every morning, I open my e-mail and find pages of art sent in by artists across the country who draw my stories. When I’m tired of working on the stories, I can go online and find my readers commenting on my stories or telling me when I make mistakes.
Keep reading and writing, it’s a wonderful way to live.

24、“You get excited about everything because you were born in the summer!” Does that sound like something your grandparents used to say to you?
Of course, you’re a learned person who doesn’t believe in such things. But scientists now say that it might not all be superstition (迷信).
Researchers from Semmelweis University in Hungary recently asked 366 university students to fill out a questionnaire. The answers given included things like “My mood often changes for no reason”, “I love to deal with new projects, even if they’re risky ”, and “I complain a lot”. They then compared students’ answers to their birthdays. They found that the season of your birth may have some effect on who you are.
Researchers found that people born in the summer were more likely to quickly change between sad and happy emotions. People born in the winter, however, were less likely to become angry. Spring birthdays were more likely to make people overly positive, while people born in autumn were less likely to be depressive (忧郁的).
So, why could the seasons cause such differences?
“Biochemical studies have shown that the season in which you are born affects some monoamine neurotransmitters (单胺类神经递质),” lead researcher Xenia Gonda said in a written statement. “This led us to believe that birth season may have a longer-lasting effect.”
Monoamine neurotransmitters are given off from neurones (神经元细胞). They affect our emotions. So the researchers believe they might have an effect on the development of our personalities.
Different seasons also have different food and nutrients (养分) to offer. In addition, mothers usually get more physical exercise and enjoy more sunlight in warm seasons than in cold seasons. All these are “environmental factors ” which may influence a person’s personality, said Gonda.
But the research only included a survey and didn’t follow participants over time. More research is needed before a final answer can be given on the connection between season and personality.
Don’t worry, though. Even if the connection is proven, it won’t mean that your birth month completely decides who you are. Being happy or sad is up to you.
【1】The study from Semmelweis University in Hungary intended to prove that _________________.
