21、We’ve probably all heard the saying that things won’t make us happy: we make ourselves happy 【1】. So the following are four ways you can start practicing happiness today.
【2】.
Plenty of important information can be found on the news and social media, but those are so easy avenues to depression and anxiety. Don’t follow the accounts that break down your self-esteem and turn to something that lift your spirits. What you consume greatly determines what lives in your mind, so consume wisely.
Cut down on your “yeses”.
When we are being pulled in a million different directions by our significant others or jobs, we can get tired quickly. 【3】. You can’t give your absolute best to everyone when your happiness tank is almost empty, so try to turn down those extra activities in your life that are unnecessary.
Train your mind to make positive substitutions.
【4】. Resist this mindset (心态) by actively trying to turn negative thoughts into positive or even neutral ones the minute they enter your mind. Even if your heart is not fully behind Whatever positive substitution you’ve come up with, what’s most important is that you’re building the habit of doing it.
Turn your attention to someone else.
Have you ever had a friend who ordered you a cup of coffee online just because it was a Tuesday and he/she missed you? Well, be that person for someone else! On those days when your mood is anything but happy, take a second to sit in gratitude for your job, your home, or your support system. Then turn your attention off yourself and onto all the ways you can channel thankfulness into making someone else’ s day. 【5】
A.Prioritize what fills you up
B.Pay attention to what you digest
C.We promise you, that’s instant joy
D.It’s time to look for opportunities to say no
E.Happiness is like a muscle you can stretch or a skill you can practice
F.Of course, you need to think of happiness as a means instead of an end
G.Whether it’s coming from an outside source or from your own inner voice, negativity feeds negativity
22、Sam Allred suffers from a rare and incurable kidney (肾脏) disease. One day, when his sister was playing a song repeatedly, Sam sang along. His sister thought it was funny so she recorded it and posted the video online. The video — and Sam — became a hit. Only 8 years old at the time, he couldn’t have expected the response.
“(The television show) The Doctors called and wanted me on their show so they paid for me to go to California,” says Sam, now 13, “and we got to stay in a hotel where all the movie stars stayed.”
During that visit to California, Angie Allred, Sam’s mother, had an idea about Sam writing a children’s book. Together, she and Sam wrote Opening Hearts, which tells Sam’s experience of living with a chronic (慢性的) illness.
“I wrote the book to teach people to be kinder to people,” Sam says.
Moreover, Sam wanted to send pillows to sick children staying in hospitals around the country to make their stay more comfortable, an idea that came from a time when he was in the hospital.
“A few kind boys came in with pillows and they gave me one and it meant a lot to me that someone cared about kids in the hospital,” says Sam.
Angie thought of starting a nonprofit organization to provide a way for people to contribute money to realize Sam’s ideas. She named the nonprofit Kindness for Kids.
Since then, Sam has taken pillows to children staying at Providence Hospital in Anchorage.
Sam’s father, Scott Allred, owns a small business that contracts (承包) shipping services with FedEx Ground. He asked the company for help.
“FedEx Ground learned about Sam’s pillow project,” says Erin Truxal, manager of public relations for FedEx Ground. “We thought, ‘What a perfect way for us to get involved.’”
The company provided shipping services for Sam to ship about 5,000 pillows to hospitals.
Sam wants to send more pillows to all of the children’s hospitals in every state. His goal is simple: “Kids in the hospital as happy as they were before they got sick,” he says.
【1】We can learn from the text that Sam Allred _____.

23、Its well known that our human memory can fail us. People can be forgetful, and they can sometimes also remember things incorrectly, with damaging consequences in the classroom, courtroom, and other areas of life. Now, researchers show for the first time that bumblebees(大黄蜂) can be unreliable witnesses too.
Bumblebees are rather clever animals, which explains why Chittka has been studying learning and memory in the insects for the last 20 years.
Most times when people have studied memory in animals, errors in performance have been taken to mean that the animals failed to learn the task or perhaps learned it and then forgot. But what if animals can experience a more interesting type of memory failure?
To find out, Chittka first trained bumblebees to expect a reward when visiting a yellow artificial flower followed by one with black-and-white rings. During subsequent tests, bees were given a choice between three types of flowers. Two were the types they’d seen in the training before. The third had yellow-and-white rings, representing a mixed-up version of the other two. Minutes after the training, the bees showed a clear preference for the flower that recently rewarded them.
One or three days later, however, something very different happened when the bumblebees’ memory was put to the test. At first, the bees showed the same preference displayed in the earlier tests, but as the time went on, they began selecting the flower with yellow rings, even though they’d never actually seen that one in training before.
Chittka says that insects make similar errors in the conjunction (结合) of long-term memories as humans do. The ability to extract (提取) common features between different events in the environment might come at the expense of remembering every detail correctly. In bees, with their limited brain capacity (容量), the pressure to store main features of several objects rather than each individual object might be much greater, compared with humans.
【1】Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?
A. Human memory can fail sometimes.
B. Bumblebees make false memories too.
C. Humans are not as clever as bumblebees.
D. Bumblebees have extraordinary memory.
【2】Which of the following is the closest in meaning to the underlined word subsequent?
A. scientific B. accurate
C. following D. exceptional
【3】What does the test mentioned in Paragraph 4 tell us?
A. Short-term memories serve the bees well.
B. The yellow artificial flower appeals to the bees.
C. Bumblebees like the flowers with yellow-and-white rings.
D. Bees have remarkable abilities to distinguish colors.
【4】 We can infer from the passage that ______.
A. Chittka thinks that bumblebees failed to remember the color of the flowers
B. Researchers have learned that bumblebees are unreliable animals
C. There exist no similarities between the memory errors in humans and bees.
D. It is less challenging for humans than bees to store main features of several objects.
24、The world’s top climate scientists of the IPCC have just released a landmark report, warning about the future of the planet. The headline—burning fossil fuels is already heating up the planet faster than anything the world has seen in 2,000 years.
The IPCC is a U. N. body of 195 member states that assesses the science related to the climate crisis on behalf of governments every few years. This is the group that defines the scientific consensus. Hundreds of scientists work on a series of reports, which take years to produce. Governments have to sign off on them. And this one is just the latest big reassessment of the climate that the IPCC has done, but it’s the first one that is done in eight years. It also has the clearest, most confident conclusions that have ever been seen in an IPCC report.
According to the report, the greenhouse gases that we have already put into the air have warmed up the planet so far by almost 2 °F compared to the pre-industrial times. This warming trend appears to be accelerating as the greenhouse gases accumulate in the atmosphere. And if we keep burning fossil fuels, by 2100—so within the lifetime of a child that’s born today—the planet could be 5 to 7°F hotter.
And one new thing in this report is that it tries to put numbers on what that means. So, for instance, they say heat waves so extreme used to only happen once every 50 years. Now they’re happening almost five times more often. Extreme droughts could double or four times in frequency. In some cases, extreme storms could become three times more frequent and drop 30% more rainfall in a day.
The scientists say preventing the worst effects will demand a U-turn away from use of fossil fuels. And it depends on us collectively. If every country, every business shifts away from burning gas, coal and oil over the next 30 years or so, we could probably limit this warming trend to a total of less than 3.5°F.
【1】What’s the author’s probable purpose of introducing the IPCC in Paragraph 2?
A.To make its work better known.
B.To respect the scientists’ commitment.
C.To make the report more convincing.
D.To appreciate its great achievements.
【2】What do you think of the current warming according to the report?
A.It results from extreme weather.
B.It is running out of fossil fuels.
C.It is badly speeding up.
D.There is no way to slow it down.
【3】How do the scientists support their conclusion in the report?
A.By defining scientific consensus.
B.By using statistics and inference.
C.By quoting authority figures.
D.By modeling climate change.
【4】What do the scientists expect people to do?
A.Make joint efforts to stop the use of fossil fuels.
B.Take positive attitudes to our planet`s future.
C.Follow the global warming trend collectively.
D.Develop new approaches to using fossil fuels.
