21、Here is an astonishing and significant fact: Mental work alone can’t make us tired. It sounds absurd. But a years ago, scientists tried to find out how long the human brain could labor without reaching a stage of fatigue (疲劳). To the amazement of these scientists, they discovered that blood passing through the brain, when it is active, shows no fatigue at all! If we took a drop of blood from a day laborer, we would find it full of fatigue toxins(毒素) and fatigue products. But if we took blood from the brain of an Albert Einstein, it would show no fatigue toxins at the end of the day.
So far as the brain is concerned, it can work as well and swiftly at the end of eight or even twelve hours of effort as at the beginning. The brain is totally tireless. So what makes us tired?
Some scientists declare that most of our fatigue comes from our mental and emotional(情绪的) attitudes. One of England’s most outstanding scientists, J.A. Hadfield, says, “The greater part of the fatigue from which we suffer is of mental origin. In fact, fatigue of purely physical origin is rare.” Dr. Brill, a famous American scientist, goes even further. He declares, “One hundred percent of the fatigue of sitting worker in good health is due to emotional problems.”
What kinds of emotions make sitting workers tired Joy Satisfaction No! A feeling of being bored, anger, anxiety, tenseness, worry, a feeling of not being appreciated---those are the emotions that tire sitting workers. Hard work by itself seldom causes fatigue. We get tired because our emotions produce nervousness in the body.
【1】What surprised the scientists a few years ago?
A. Fatigue toxins could hardly be found in a laborer’s blood.
B. The brain could work for many hours without fatigue.
C. Albert Einstein didn’t feel worn after a day’s work.
D. A mental worker’s blood was filled with fatigue toxins.
【2】 According to the author, which of the following can make sitting workers tired?
A. Challenging mental work. B. Endless tasks.
C. Physical labor. D. Unpleasant emotions.
【3】 Which of the following is properly used to describe the author’s attitude to the scientists’ idea?
A. He hesitates to accept them. B. He doubts them.
C. He argues against them. D. He agrees with them.
【4】 It is implied in the passage that in order to stay energetic, sitting workers need to ___________.
A. enjoy their work B. have some good food.
C. exercise regularly D. discover fatigue toxins
22、 I want to thank the Hollywood Foreign Press Association because we all know the press is under siege these days. We also know it’s the insatiable dedication to uncovering the absolute truth that keeps us from turning a blind eye to corruption and to injustice. To tyrants and victims, and secrets and lies. I want to say that I value the press more than ever before as we try to navigate these complicated times, which brings me to this: what I know for sure is that speaking your truth is the most powerful tool we all have. And I’m especially proud and inspired by all the women who have felt strong enough and empowered enough to speak up and share their personal stories. Each of us in this room are celebrated because of the stories that we tell, and this year we became the story.
But it’s not just a story affecting the entertainment industry. It’s one that transcends any culture, geography, race, religion, politics, or workplace. So I want tonight to express gratitude to all the women who have endured years of abuse and assault because they, like my mother, had children to feed and bills to pay and dreams to pursue.
They’re the women whose names we’ll never know. They are domestic workers and farm workers. They are working in factories and they work in restaurants and they’re in academia, engineering, medicine, and science. They’re part of the world of tech and politics and business.
They’re our athletes in the Olympics and they’re our soldiers in the military.
And there’s someone else. Recy Taylor, a name I know and I think you should know, too. In
1944. Recy Taylor was a young wife and mother walking home from a church service she’d attended in Abbeville, Alabama, when she was abducted by six armed white men, raped, and left blindfolded by the side of the road coming home from church.
They threatened to kill her if she ever told anyone, but her story was reported to the NAACP where a young worker by the name of Rosa Parks became the lead investigator on her case and together they sought justice. But justice wasn’t an option in the era of Jim Crow. The men who tried to destroy her were never persecuted.
Recy Taylor died ten days ago, just shy of her 98th birthday. She lived as we all have lived, too many years in a culture broken by brutally powerful men. For too long, women have not been heard or believed if they dare speak the truth to the power of those men. But their time is up. Their time is up.
And I just hope that Recy Taylor died knowing that her truth, like the truth of so many other women who were tormented in those years, and even now tormented, goes marching on. It was somewhere in Rosa Parks’ heart almost 11 years later, when she made the decision to stay seated on that bus in Montgomery, and it’s here with every woman who chooses to say, “Me too.” And every man who chooses to listen.
In my career, what I’ve always tried my best to do, whether on television or through film, is to say something about how men and women really behave. To say how we experience shame, how we love and how we rage, how we fail, how we retreat, persevere and how we overcome.
I’ve interviewed and portrayed people who’ve withstood some of the ugliest things life can throw at you, but the one quality all of them seem to share is an ability to maintain hope for a brighter morning, even during our darkest nights.
So I want all the girls watching here, now, to know that a new day is on the horizon! And when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men, fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say “Me too” again.

23、For years, Apple's business has centered around the iPhone, but sales of that once-revolutionary but now commonplace device have slowed. And the entire world of computers has been flipped (翻动) on its head. Apple has been diversifying beyond hardware, selling iCloud storage to its customers, a $10 a month music streaming service and movies and television shows through iTunes.
But Monday's concerned announcement takes that diversification to a whole new level. Apple said it was launching a lot of new services, from news to video games and a credit card. Its biggest project is entertainment streaming service Apple TV+.
Apple is expected to invest many billions a year, according to analysts, on making video content to compete in a crowded market that includes Amazon, Netflix, Hulu and Disney.
The real magic in consumer technology is happening less and less inside the devices people carry around and more and more in server farms scattered around the world, where massive amounts of data get processed and then transmitted to electronics like the Amazon Echo or Google Home.
In fact, the electronics people are excited about buying are becoming vessels for sending and receiving data. And in that area, Apple has fallen behind companies like Google, Amazon and Microsoft, which now pull in significant revenue from selling cloud services, which is a fancy term for data center usage and storage.
The invite Apple sent to invitees said simply, “It's show time.” The question now is whether Apple can break a leg.
【1】Where does the magic of consumer technology come from?
A.Streaming service.
B.iCloud storage.
C.Server farms.
D.Video games.

B.Apple expects to develop many new functions in its phone.
C.People are crazy about getting some new electronics in life.
D.Apple provides a lot of new services for its consumers now.
【4】What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Apple's new efforts to compete against competitors.
B.Electronics will play important roles in technology.
C.Some companies do better than Apple in technology.
D.Apple is able to benefit a lot from its diverse service.
24、How do you consume your music? What format do you listen to it on? Technology now allows us to stream and download our favorite songs through websites and apps, and we could enjoy them whenever and wherever we like. So it's surprising that the popularity of some old technology is increasing.
A number of musicians have been releasing (发行) their music on cassette tape. While it lacks the good sound quality that we expect to hear today, it was once a popular way for teenagers to enjoy recorded music. The introduction of the Walkman portable cassette player in 1979, made by Sony, meant people could listen to music on the move for the first time. By the end of 1989, 83 million tapes had been bought by British music fans, but the invention of the CD in the 1990s changed that.
Though the cassette tape declined in the 1990s, in the first six months of 2020, nearly 65,000 music cassettes were sold in the UK, double the sales from the same period the previous year. Although this is only a small part of overall music sales, cassette tapes are physical articles that can be kept and collected-not stored in the cloud. And the reappearance of the cassette has been helped by big names like Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber, who have released their music on this format.
To listen to music on a cassette, you need a tape player, but this hasn't discouraged the new younger audience. Gennaro Castaldo from the British Phonographic Industry told the BBC, “Younger consumers are now buying into their collectable appeal, and the more they do this, the greater the demand for record companies and artists to cater to.” But although cassettes won't replace streaming as a way of listening to music, it does go to show how some technology never dies!
【1】How does the author develop paragraph 2?
A.By stating facts.
B.By giving examples.
C.By comparing opinions.
D.By making predictions.
【2】What can be inferred from Gennaro Castaldo's words?
A.Old technology faces a huge challenge of new technology.
B.Younger consumers are interested in collecting tape players.
C.Record companies and artists fail to meet consumers' demand.
D.Consumer spending is the driving force behind the music market.
【3】What is the text mainly about?
A.Major advances in music technology.
B.Different formats to consume music on.
C.Musicians' preferred ways to release music.
D.Cassettes' coming back into a popular trend.

Michele’s efforts paid off.He turned his father’s creations into globally sold and consumed products. One of their most successful products, Nutella, had become a staple food in many homes. The third generation now runs the company.Michele’s sons, Pietro and Giovanni worked side by side as managing directors for ten years until an accident resulting in Pietro’ death.Still inspired by his family and their hard work and determination, Giovanni is guiding Ferrero into the future.
