二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、“In a close cooperation between several first class chemists, physicists, and biologists, we have developed a very efficient water filter (净水器). It does not need any energy source but sunlight,” said Forró. “Thus our device can supply clean drinking water even at remote places.” The small, adaptable flat-bodied device was designed at Switzerland’s EPFL research institute, by a team led by Prof. László Forró.

Water enters via a tube(管子) in the top, flows through a multilayer composite(复合的) material sandwiched between two sheets of glass, and exits through a tube in the bottom. The composite material is made up of titanium dioxide nanowires(TDN,二氧化钛纳米线) interwoven with carbon nanotubes. When the filter is exposed to sunlight, the UV light(紫外线) causes the composite to produce a group of molecules(分子) known as reactive oxygen species. These molecules are highly effective at killing harmful bacteria and viruses. Its potential challenge when working outdoors is rainy or cloudy days.

The filter has already been successfully tested on water containing E. coli bacteria, with results indicating that it should also have no problem ridding of other harmful bacteria. In fact, it is believed that the technology may also prove effective at ridding of micro-pollutants such as pesticides(杀虫剂) and drug remains. It should be noted that when activated by UV light, titanium dioxide nanowires on their own are capable of killing harmful viruses and bacteria. For that matter, even UV light alone can purify water, if the water is left sitting in the sunlight in a transparent container.

However, Prof. Forró told us that his team’s filter is much more effective—this is due in part to the carbon nanotubes’ ability to absorb heat from the sunlight, making the purification process faster. The present small-scale model can treat 2 liters (0.5 gal) of water per day, although that figure would rise considerably if the technology were to be scaled up.

【1】Why can the new filter work at remote areas?

    A.It is small and flat-shaped.

B.It can be powered by sunlight.

    C.It’s designed by famous scientists.

D.It can be efficient in cleaning water.

【2】Which aspects of filter does Paragraph 2 mainly focus on?

    A.Working conditions.

    B.Appearance and possible effects.

    C.Strengths and weaknesses.

    D.Structure and working process.

【3】What can we learn from Paragraph 3?

A.The filter can get rid of a lot of pesticides.

B.The filter can kill all bacteria of the water.

C.UV light alone is effective in purifying water.

D.TDN can kill viruses without being activated.

【4】What’s the author s purpose of writing the passage?

A.To state a new function of UV light.

    B.To introduce a solar-driven water filter.

C.To inform the discovery of a new material.

D.To stress the effectiveness of a water filter.

  • 27、Smith entered Mr. Watson's office. The boss was a hard man. He fired people who didn't do well without giving them a second chance.

"Smith,"said Mr. Watson," this past year your department hasn't earned money. We're going to drop that department. It's finished. I'm sorry, but you'll have to go.""But, sir, if I just had a little more time. For the moment I need the job to keep my son at Riverside School."

"I know, sir. But he likes it there so much! He's a star athlete and the best boxer in the school. The boys call him Champ(冠军) there."

The boss sat perfectly still for a long time---a faraway(恍惚的) look in his eyes. Then, suddenly, he said,"We've got to close your department, Smith. But you'll take over a new job in another department. It means longer hours, maybe more pay. Now get out. You're here for life."

Smith got out, with surprise on his face. Then the boss took a letter from the top drawer of his desk. It was Herbie's last letter from Riverside School written a few days before he died. He had read it over and over again with sick pain.

They've got a good chemistry department here. And there's one boy here who is really great. He's a track star and boxing champ and just tops in chemistry. The boys call him Champ. He made them stop throwing my books around. And he knocked a boy down who hit me. He is the best friend I ever had. Dad, when I grow up, I want to do something for Champ. • 28、From checking social media every minute to being lost in computer games, we tend to overuse technology. ”For many people, a moment without your phone or laptop in sight can feel like a lifetime,“ the Daily Mail commented.

A computer model called Mindy may persuade many people to think twice. A team from the US-based company Toll Free Forwarding built a three-dimensional(三维的)model to uncover the negative effects technology can have on human bodies in less than 800 years.

”Spending hours looking down at your phone strains your neck and throws your spine off balance,“ explained Caleb Backe, a health and wellness expert in the US. Then, the muscles in our neck need to spend extra effort to support the head, making our back hunched(驼背的)and neckwide.

”The way we hold our phones can cause strain in certain points of contact-causing text claw(手机手),“ Nikola Djordjevic, a practicing physician in Serbia, told the team. It affects the elbows too, causing pain in the arm. Scientifically, it is called cubital tunnel syndrome. That’s why Mindy has a 90-degree elbow, and her hands look like she’s always holding a mobile phone.

Some people also commented that human evolution may not work this way. They believe that only features with actual benefits would be kept throughout the years. For example, features that can increase the rate of survival instead of the negative impact of technology.

However, current human lifestyles still raise concerns. A model called Emma was built by researchers in the UK in 2019 to show how the way people work at their desks could change them in 20 years. The research team built Emma based on the health issues mentioned by over 3,000 workers in France, Germany and the UK. Emma’s back stays bent and her legs are swollen due to the time people spend in front of computers. With little time spent outdoors and in the sun, her skin is pale, too.

【1】What is the purpose of building the model Mindy?

A.To test how our backs become hunched.

B.To help people avoid overusing phones.

C.To explore how technology can affect human bodies.

D.To study people’s unhealthy habit of using phones.

【2】What does the model Mindy look like, according to the text?

    A.She has dark skin.

    B.She has a thin neck.

    C.She has beautiful hands.

    D.She has a strange elbow.

【3】What is paragraph 5 mainly about?

A.A further example of the technological impact.

B.A different opinion on how people will evolve.

    C.Different comments on Mindy’s appearance.

D.The connection between evolution and technology.

【4】Why does the author mention another model Emma?

    A.To compare the two models.

    B.To promote healthy lifestyles.

C.To point out typical health issues.

D.To show people’s worries about current lifestyles.

  • 29、According to archaeologists, language first appeared among Homo sapiens about thousands of years ago. However, how language evolved is still in dispute and mainstream theories fall into two distinctly different camps.

That language came about as an evolutionary adaptation is one widely held theory. That was where the idea of natural selection came into play, which was the belief that the specific physical features of a population made that population more likely to survive its environment, like the turtle and its shell. On one hand, humans needed to communicate with each other in order to survive the harsh environment. Being able to communicate by using language gave the human species a distinct survival advantage. On the other hand, language was needed for social interaction, according to those who subscribed to the adaptation theory.

In their paper "Natural Language and Natural Selection", researchers Steven Pinker and Paul Bloom theorized that a series of calls or gestures evolved over time into combinations, giving us complex communication, or language. As things became more complicated around them, humans needed a more complex system to convey information to one another. Early man saw a group of deer he wanted to hunt. He made a sound to his hunting partner that means "deer are nearby." One day, a storm came in and the hunter noticed that thunder scared the deer away. As a result, the hunter went hungry until the storm passed. Over time, the same hunter also learned to recognize the warning signs for bad weather-dark skies and increased wind. Early man realized that when the sky darkened and the wind picked up, he needed to tell his hunting partner to speed up the pursuit of the deer. Therefore, he came up with a series of sounds that refer to both the deer and the bad weather. That series of sounds was the beginning of an evolutionary adaptation that eventually became language.

As humans learned more about how to best survive, they developed a need to convey these survival methods to their population. To be brief, that's the adaptation theory.

【1】According to the passage, the text is mainly about ________.

    B.the gradual development of language

    C.the research on natural selection

    D.the reproduction of human

    A.Be concerned about

    B.Object to

    C.Approve of

【3】In paragraph 3, how does the author explain the adaptation theory?

    A.By giving an example.

    B.By listing data.

    C.By carrying out a survey.

    D.By comparing.

【4】What will the author most probably tell us next?

A.The exact place where humans came from.

B.The methods of humans' shaping non- verbal thinking.

C.The reasons why animals cannot form language.

D.The other theory of how language evolved.

  • 30、When a human infant is born into any other community in any part of the world, it has two things in common with any infant, provided neither of them has been damaged in any way either before or during birth.

Firstly, and most obviously, new born children are completely _________. Apart from a powerful capacity to draw attention on their helplessness by using sound, there is nothing the new born child can do to _________ his own survival. Without _________ from some other human being or beings, be it mother, grandmother, or human group, a child is very unlikely to survive. This helplessness of human infants is in marked contrast with the _________ of many new born animals to get to their _________ within minutes of birth and run with the herd within a few hours. Although young animals are certainly in _________, sometimes for weeks or even months after birth, compared with the human _________, they very quickly develop the capacity to _________ themselves. It is during this very long period in which the human infant is totally _________ on the others that it reveals the second feature which it ____________ with all other undamaged human infants, a capacity to learn ____________.

For this reason, biologists now suggest that language is "species specific" to the human race, that is to say, they consider the human infant to be genetically ____________ in such a way that it can ____________ language. This suggestion implies that just as human beings are designed to see three-dimensionally and in color and just as they are designed to ____________ upright rather man to move on all fours, so they are designed to learn and use language as part of their normal ____________ as well-formed human beings.

四、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 31、Directions: Complete the following passages by using the words in the box… Each word can only be used once. Do note that there is one word more than you need.

What’s the point of reading if we all forget what we read sooner or later? Being a liberal arts (文科) teacher, more often than not, I will find myself confronted with this sort of question. And knowing that I am not in a good position to 1 this question which can be simple and hard at the same time, I always quote what William Johnson Cory has written in a letter in which he articulates (清晰表达) the purpose of education. From my perspective, his words can also be taken as a 2 argument for reading. The full quotation goes:

“At school you are 3 not so much in acquiring knowledge as in making mental efforts under criticism. A certain amount of knowledge you can indeed with average faculties acquire so as to retain; nor need you 4 the hours you spent on much that is forgotten, for the 5 of lost knowledge at least protects you from many illusions. But you go to a great school not so much for knowledge as for arts and habits: for the habit of attention, for the art of entering 6 into another person’s thoughts, for the habit of submitting to censure (批判) and refutation (反驳), for the art if indicating assent (附议) or dissent (异议) in gradated terms, for the habit of regarding minute points of accuracy, for the art of working out what is possible in a given time, for taste, for discrimination, for mental courage, and for mental soberness (清醒).”

Besides, even though we eventually forget most of what we read, there can still be 7 in the moments of reading a particular book in a particular place. What I remember most about Hemingway’s short-story 8 Men Without Women is the persistent cough I had due to a heavy cold, which at that time did give me a strong feeling that I would also like to die for my beloved.

So the purpose of reading is not to memorize 9 everything we read but to keep reading. After all, if there are no 10 opinions on the idea that we are what we eat then we are also what we read.
