  • 26、Many people in America love Chinese food, but perhaps nobody can match David R Chan, Mr Chan is a 72-year-old former lawyer in Los Angeles. 【1】 If you visit one Chinese restaurant per day, it would take more than 20 years to reach his current count—7,812 restaurants.

Chinese food was cooked in the US for the first time by Chinese immigrants during the California Gold Rush in the mid 19th century. However, as a descendant (后裔) of Chinese grandparents who immigrated to California, Mr. Chan did not eat Chinese food as a child. 【2】

【3】 As a new law removed restrictions on immigration from Asia, the US began to receive an increasing number of immigrants from China, including Hong Kong and Taiwan, bringing a variety of regional cuisines from across China.

In the 1970s, Mr. Chan’s interests in the history of American-Chinese began to grow. 【4】 “At the beginning, it was just a search for identity,” Mr. Chan said. He saw what it was like to be Chinese in different parts of the country.

Mr. Chan previously had no idea how varied it was, and in the following years, he tasted various Chinese food throughout the US. 【5】 Now, Mr. Chan has been a really keen fan of Chinese cuisines, and has witnessed the development of the Chinese food in the US.

B.American-Chinese food tends to be localized.

C.He started to dine at Chinese restaurants across the US.

  • 27、How to End a Family Fight

Seeing people in your family fight can be really tough. Whether you’re Involved or not, you might be feeling sad, angry, or even ashamed when your loved ones yell and scream at each other. 【1】

Keep you cool. 【2】 If you feel like you might shout or explode instead of talking calmly, take a walk around the block to calm down first. No matter who you’re talking to, doing it in a calm manner will go much better than shouting or screaming.

【3】 It will be much easier to talk to everyone at the same time. See if there’s a good time and day that works for everyone in your family to get together. Then, you can all meet up and talk about your issues. If you’re younger, try asking your parents to call a family meeting and invite all your family members. If the problem is with your extended family, consider asking them to talk over video chat or on the phone.

Use language. Center the problems on how you’re feeling. Instead of blaming your family members or calling them out, try to use “I” statements as much as possible. This can help people feel less defensive and more able to work through issues with you. For example, instead of saying, “You shout at me too much.” 【4】

Listen to everyone. Give everyone in the family a chance to speak. 【5】 Don’t interrupt, even if it seems like someone is lying or being dramatic — when it’s your Aim to talk, you can bring up the matter that’s bothering you.

    A.Call a family meeting.

    B.Maintain neutral body language.

C.You could say, “When you shout at me, I feel afraid.”

D.It’s easy to get fired up when your family is fighting.

  • 28、Our house was across the street from a hospital. We rented the upstairs rooms to outpatients at the clinic. One summer evening as I was preparing supper, there was a knock at the door. I opened it to see a truly awful looking man hardly taller than my eight-year-old daughter.

But the frightening thing was his swollen face. He told me he’d been hunting for a room since noon but no one seemed to offer. For a moment I hesitated, but his next words convinced me, “I could sleep on the porch(门廊). My bus leaves early in the morning.” Having let him in, I went inside and asked him to join us for supper. But he politely refused. When I had finished the dishes, I went out to talk with him for a few minutes.

He told me he fished for a living to support his daughter’s family. He didn’t tell it by way of complaint. In fact, he was thankful that no pain accompanied his disease. He thanked life for giving him the strength to keep going.

At bedtime, we put a small camp bed in the children’s room for him. When I got up in the morning, the bed linens were neatly folded and the little man was out on the porch. He refused breakfast, but just before he left, he smiled, “Your children made me feel at home. Grownups are bothered by my face, but children don’t seem to mind.” I told him he was welcome to come again.

In the years he came to stay overnight with us, there was never a time that he did not bring us fish or vegetables. Other times we received packages. Knowing how far he must walk to mail these and how little money he had made the gifts more precious. I know our family always will be thankful to have known him.

【1】What might lead to the old man’s failure to get a room before?

    A.His fishing job.

    B.His lack of money.

    C.His ugly appearance.

    D.His disabled daughter.

【2】Why did the author finally accept the old man?

A.He was in very bad condition.

B.He agreed to sleep on the porch.

    C.He wouldn’t leave until accepted.

D.He wouldn’t bother them too much.

【3】What can we know about the old man from the text?

A.He suffered a lot from his disease.

B.He made efforts to send the author gifts.

C.He pretended to like the author’s children.

D.He was embarrassed a lot to stay in the author’s house.

【4】Which was of the following is a suitable title for the text?

    A.An Unforgettable Gift

    B.An Odd Fisherman

    C.A Grateful Heart

    D.A Silent Complaint

  • 29、Our cities have never been denser, taller, or busier than they are now, and with that comes the constant battle for land. But if we look at images of any city center, we can quickly spot plenty of unused space-the rooftops. What can we use this precious resource for?

In many cities, it is dedicated to recreation like bars and pools. But when a rooftop offers access to sunlight, there are two more choices for its use-agriculture and solar power.

Green roofs have been growing in popularity for more than a decade, and in some cases growing in scale too. They can provide a habitat for birds and insects in an otherwise unfriendly environment. They are also used to keep the building cool and decrease storm water runoff. Green roofs come with the added benefit of reducing the terrible urban heat island effect, whereby, as a result of heat-absorbing materials like asphalt(沥青)and concrete, cities can be several degrees warmer than the surrounding cntryside. In contrast, trees and green spaces can absorb shortwave radiation, and use it to evaporate(蒸发)water from their leaves a kind of double cooling effect.

As food security and urban nutrition creep ever-higher on the agenda for the United Nations, there’s also a worldwide movement of using green roofs for food production. In regions with suitable climates, hundreds of different vegetables, fruits, herbs and salad leaves can be grown on rooftops. Beehives and chicken nests are also becoming commonplace amongst the high-rises.

With so many cities now stopping using fossil fuels, and the cost of solar panels dropping dramatically, PV(光伏)systems have become a good option to produce electricity. The US National Renewable Energy Laboratory have estimated that rooftop PV systems could generate almost 40% of the electricity demands nationwide.

However, the use of rooftops for food production could have higher local value than solar PV energy production, according to a recent paper by some US researchers focusing on the rooftops of a mixed-use neighborhood in Lisbon. Of course, in another city, you may come to exactly the opposite conclusion.

【1】Why does the author raise a question in the first paragraph?

A.To invite readers to answer it.

    B.To introduce the topic.

    C.To show off his knowledge.

D.To explain what green rooftop is.

【2】What is the benefit of city green rooftops?

    A.Providing habitats for all animals.

    B.Increasing storm water runoff.

    C.Keeping the building warm.

D.Relieving the urban heat island effect.

【3】Which of the following is Not True?

A.Cities can be several degrees warmer than the surrounding countryside.

B.Green roofs are used for food production all over the world.

C.Rooftop PV systems could generate 40% of the electricity demands in the US.

D.Using rooftops for food production has higher value than solar PV energy production.

【4】What is probably the best title?

    A.The Rise of Green Rooftop

B.The Benefits of the Urban Rooftop

C.The Advantage of PV Energy System

D.The Reason for Urban Rooftop’s Popularity
