二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、If you’re always comparing yourself to your peers, you might be low in confidence and unsure of yourself. Here are some tips on how to stop comparing yourself to others.

Write down your positive traits. When you ignore your abilities, it becomes easier to compare yourself to others. You might focus on their strengths and ignore your own completely. 【1】 By being aware of your best qualities, you can learn to love yourself and build up your self﹣confidence.

Keep a gratitude journal. A gratitude journal helps you recognize the things you may take for granted so you can fully appreciate them. To start journaling, reflect on the little things that bring you joy. 【2】 Explain how they influence your life in detail. For example, if you jog in the park every day, you might express how you’re grateful for your health and how jogging helps you overcome stress at work.

【3】 Instead of focusing on your “weaknesses”, reflect on the areas you can improve. Take advantage of all chances to improve your skills and techniques. Don’t be afraid to ask other people for help along the way. Only by making efforts to improve your abilities can you make yourself happy.

Compete against yourself. 【4】 Instead, use comparison to become an improved version of yourself. Set goals for yourself and try to improve your own personal best. When you set a goal for yourself, track your progress so that you can see how you are moving toward that goal. That way

Overcoming comparison is a continuous process, but it is possible! 【5】

    A.Take control over your life.

    B.Work on improving your abilities.

C.Don’t compare your life to other people’s.

D.Write down why you’re grateful for them.

E.With time and practice, you can become the best version of yourself.

F.Appreciate others and use their success to motivate you to work hard.

G.To avoid this negative behavior, make a list of your strengths and talents.

  • 27、“Regrets, I’ve had a few. But still, I keep going forward with them,” a pop star sang in his song in 1969. The idea of the song is attractive: what’s done is done, so we should treat regrets properly and move on. Some people take a step further. They say they have no regrets at all and that life should be lived without looking back.

It is easier said than done, though. In 2020, Professor Graham launched the World Regret Survey, the largest survey on the topic ever undertaken. With his research team, Graham asked more than 15,000 people in 105 countries, “How often do you look back on your life and wish you had done things differently?” 78 percent of them said that regrets are at least an occasional part of their life; roughly 21 percent said they feel regretful all the time. Only 1 percent said they never feel regretful.

If you belong to the “no regrets” group, you might think that all regrets are the source of unhappiness. Although filling your life with regrets is indeed bad for you, going to the other extreme may be even worse. To get rid of your regrets doesn’t free you from shame or sorrow. Instead, it leads you to make the same mistakes again and again.

To truly get over our guilt requires that we put regrets in their proper place. Your regrets can teach you to become smarter and more successful-if you let it. First, make a list of your regrets, note how you want to change your behavior, and outline your resolutions going forward. Next, list all the ways that you can invest in your own skills and get started right now.

Life is a journey full of pleasures and pains. To live it well and fully means learning from every bit of it, including the mistakes, and moving forward.

【1】What can we learn from the song in the first paragraph?

A.The singer didn’t have any regret.

    B.The singer found regrets attractive.

C.We should live a life without regrets.

D.We should still move on with regrets.

【2】What does the underlined part “going to the other extreme” in Paragraph 3 mean?

    A.Having no regrets at all.

    B.Making the same mistakes.

    C.Getting rid of unhappiness.

    D.Feeling regretful in your life.

【3】What is the author’s attitude towards regrets?

    A.Unconcerned.

    B.Doubtful.

    C.Objective.

    D.Negative.

  • 28、Winters are long and unforgiving in North Dakota. The winter of 1996 was especially brutal. It was a hard time in my own life too, A neck injury had kept me flat in bed for nearly a year. “Just in time for Easter,” my husband, Dick, said. But how could I feel the joy when the snow was four feet deep and I had months of painful physical treatment ahead?

I was doing the dishes one day, feeling hopeless when there was a tap against the glass. It was a branch of the troublesome cottonwood (棉白杨).Back in the fall of 1979, it was a new subdivision (分支) then, an eight-foot stick. The people who’d briefly occupied the house before us had placed the pipe from the pump next to it. The earth was so wet that the poor thing had fallen down, most of its bare root system pointing skyward, and blowing hopelessly back and forth in the cold wind. Dick decided to pull it out one day, but I disapproved of it.

“Look at how hard it’s trying!” I said, pointing to the way it strongly kept hold of the earth. “It deserves a chance.”

Dick borrowed some tools. We packed dry soil around the tree and put up some stakes () into the ground, making it stand upright. That winter was still terrible. Surprisingly, in the spring my “rescue stick” put forth a few leaves, then with lots of branches. The year after that, we were able to remove the stakes. By the 1990s that little stick was a giant, towering over the house.

Now the tapping at the window continued, louder as the wind picked up, almost as though to tell me to look up. At last, I did. I caught ray breath. In the window against the icy blue sky, thousands and thousands of fresh red buds were waving in the wind.

The tree was bursting with life and I had a wonderful Easter.

1】【1What is the meaning of the underlined word “brutal” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?

    A. busy.   B. hard.

    C. long.   D. warm.

2】【2How did Dick rescue the new subdivision?

    A. By supporting the stick firmly.

    B. By watering the stick regularly.

    C. By distributing chemical fertilizer.

    D. By gathering sticks day and night.

3】【3What is the author’s purpose in writing the last paragraph?

    A. To inform us of the current condition of her cottonwood.

    B. To imply that she’d spent the hardest time and felt hopeful.

    C. To tell us that the tree had survived from the awful winter

    D. To suggest what she was going to do for the coming festival.

4】【4Which of the following can serve as the main idea of the passage?

    A. A friend in need is a friend indeed,

    B. There is no garden without its weeds.

    C. Success is the accumulation of sweat,

    D. Where there is life, there is hope.

  • 29、The poverty line is the minimum income that people need for an acceptable standard of living. People with incomes below the poverty line are considered poor. Economists study the causes of poverty in order to find solutions to the problem.

As the general standard of living in the country rises, the poverty line does, too. Therefore, even with today’s relatively high standard of living, about 10 percent of the people in the United States are below the poverty line. However, if these people had stable jobs, they could have an acceptable standard of living. Economists suggest several reasons why poor people do not have jobs.

For one thing, more than half of the poor people in the United States are not qualified to work. Over 40 percent of the poor people are children. By law, children less than 16 years old cannot work in many industries. A large number of poor people are old. Many companies do not hire people over 65 years old, the normal retirement age.

Some poor adults do not look for jobs for a variety of personal reasons: they are sick, they do not have any motivation, they have family problems, or they do not believe that they can find a job.

Other poor people look for a job, but cannot find one. Many poor adults never went to high school. Therefore, when they look for jobs, they have few skills that they can offer.

At the present time, the government thinks it can reduce poverty in the country in the following ways:

First, if the national economy grows, businesses and industries hire more workers. Some of the poor who are qualified to look for jobs may find employment. Then they will no longer below the poverty line.

Second, if society invests in the poor, the poor will become more productive.

If the government spends money on social programs, education and training for poor people, the poor will have the skills to offer. Then it is more probable that they can find jobs.

Finally, if the government distributes society’s income differently, it raises some poor people above the poverty line. The government collects taxes from the non-poor and gives money to the poor. These payments to the poor are called welfare.

Some economists are looking for better solutions to the poverty problem. However, at the present time, many people depend on welfare for a minimally acceptable standard of living.

1This passage is mainly about   .

    A. the poverty line

    B. how to look for jobs

    C. how to raise the standard of living

    D. the causes of poverty and solutions to the problem

2If the general standard of living in the country rises, the poverty line   .

    A. falls   B. does not change

    C. rises   D. changes at random

3Which one is not the reason that poor adults do not look for jobs?

    A. They are too sick to work.   B. They have no motivation.

    C. They family problems.   D. They are too lazy to find jobs.

4The underlined word “distribute” means ”.

    A. charge   B. share

    C. receive   D. deliver

  • 30、In Dad’s Army, a British sitcom (情景喜剧) about a home-defense Force, Sergeant (中士) Wilson would often cast doubt on his commander’s various orders with the phrase “Do you think that’s wise, sir?” His doubt, although often ignored, was usually ________.

Many employees must be tempted to imitate Sgt. Wilson when they see their bosses head down the wrong track. But caution often leads workers to keep silent for fear of appearing foolish and offensive and ________ being at high risk of losing their jobs.

A culture of silence can be dangerous, argues a new book The Fearless Organization, by Amy Edmondson, a professor at Harvard Business School. Some of her cases are from the ________ industry, where staff felt too powerless to make any changes due to their ranks. One was its deadliest accident: a crash between two Boeing-747s in the Canary Islands occurred in 1977 when a co-pilot felt unable to ________ his captain into changing the decision to take off. Another case was that of the Columbia space shuttle in 2003; an engineer who may have diagnosed damage to the shuttle’s wing before the flight felt unable to speak as he was “too ________” at NASA.

In a corporate culture based on ________ and obedience, it may appear that targets are being achieved. But in the long run the effect is likely to be counterproductive (适得其反的). Studies show that fear ________ learning. And when faced with a problem, scared workers find ways of ________ it or getting around it with inefficient practices.

The solution is to create an atmosphere of “psychological safety” whereby workers can speak their minds. It does not mean that workers, or their ideas, are ________ criticism, or that they should complain continuously. In a sense, this method is the ________ of Toyota’s “lean manufacturing” process, which allows any worker who spots a problem to stop the production line.

Pixar, the production firm, created what it called a “Braintrust” to give ________ to film directors. The rules were that advice should be constructive and about the idea, not the person, and that filmmakers should not be ________ in response.

And psychological safety is not about whistleblowing (检举). Indeed, if an employee feels the need to act as a whistleblower by speaking to external ________, it suggests employers have not created an environment within the firm where criticism can be ________. Nor is such a culture only about safety or avoiding mistakes. As mundane (单调的) tasks are automated, and workers rely on computers for data analysis, the added value of humans will stem from their ________. But as Ms. Edmondson’s book demonstrates, it is hard to be either constructive or creative if you are not confident about speaking out.
