二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Two years ago, Rupert Murdoch’s daughter, Elisabeth, spoke of the “disturbing lack of integrity across so many of our institutions”. Integrity had collapsed, she argued, because of a collective acceptance that the only “sorting mechanism” in society should be profit and the market. But “it’s us, human beings who create the society we want, not profit”.

Driving her point home, she continued: “It’s increasingly apparent that the absence of purpose, of a moral language within government, media or business could become one of the most dangerous drivers for capitalism and freedom.” This same absence of moral purpose was wounding companies such as News International, she thought, making it more likely that it would lose its way as it had with widespread illegal telephone hacking.

As the hacking trial concludes – finding guilty one ex-editor of the News of the World, Andy Coulson, for conspiring to hack phones, and finding his predecessor, Rebekah Brooks, innocent of the same charge –the wider issue of lack of integrity still stands. Journalists are known to have hacked the phones of up to 5,500 people. This is hacking on an industrial scale, as was acknowledged by Glenn Mulcaire, the man hired by the News of the World in 2001 to be the point person for phone hacking. Others await trial. This long story still unfolds.

In many respects, the lack of moral purpose frames not only the fact of such widespread phone hacking but the terms on which the trial took place. One of the astonishing revelations was how little Rebekah Brooks knew of what went on in her newsroom, how little she thought to ask and the fact that she never inquired how the stories arrived. The core of her successful defence was that she knew nothing.

In today’s world, title has become normal that well-paid executives should not be accountable for what happens in the organizations that they run, and perhaps we should not be so surprised. For a generation, the collective doctrine(主义) has been that the sorting mechanism of society should be profit. The words that have mattered are efficiency, flexibility, shareholder value, business–friendly, wealth generation, sales, impact and, in newspapers, circulation. Words degraded to the margin have been justice, fairness, tolerance, proportionality and accountability.

The purpose of editing the News of the World was not to promote reader understanding, to be fair in what was written or to betray any common humanity. It was to ruin lives in the quest for circulation and impact. Ms Brooks may or may not have had suspicions about how her journalists got their stories, but she asked no questions, gave no instructions—nor received traceable, recorded answers.

【1】According to the first two paragraphs, Elisabeth was upset by ________.

A.the consequences of the current sorting mechanism

B.companies’ financial loss due to immoral practices

    C.governmental ineffectiveness on moral issues

D.the wide misuse of integrity among institutions

【2】It can be inferred from Paragraph 3 that ________.

A.Glem Mulcaire may deny phone hacking as a crime

B.more journalists may be found guilty of phone hacking

C.Andy Coulson should be held innocent of the charge

D.phone hacking will be accepted on certain occasions

【3】The author holds that the current collective doctrine shows _________.

    A.generally distorted values

    B.unfair wealth distribution

    C.an unpopular lifestyle

    D.a strict moral code

【4】Which of the following is suggested in the last paragraph?

A.The quality of writing is of primary importance.

B.Common humanity is central to news reporting.

C.Moral awareness matters in editing a newspaper.

    D.Journalists need stricter industrial regulations.

  • 27、J. K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter book series, began writing at age 6. In her biography(传记), she well remembers her good friend, Sean, whom she met in secondary school, helped build her confidence in becoming a very good writer. “He was the first person to know my serious dream to be a writer. He was also the only person who thought I was certain to be a success at it, which meant much more to me.”

Rowling met many difficulties in her writing, especially fantasy(幻想) stories. It wasn't until l990 that she first got the idea about Harry Potter. As she recalls, it was on a long train journey from London to Manchester that “the idea of Harry Potter simply fell into my head. I didn't have a pen with me, and I was too shy to ask anybody if I could borrow one. I think, now, that this was probably a good thing, because I simply sat and thought, for four(delayed train) hours, and all the details appear in my brain, and this thin, black-haired, glasses-wearing boy who didn't know he was a wizard (男巫)became more and more real to me.”

That same year, her mother passed away after a ten-year illness, which deeply affected her writing. She went on to marry and had a daughter, but separated from her husband shortly afterwards.

During this time, Rowling suffered from depression(抑郁症). She ,out of work, completed her first novel in the cafes, where she could get her daughter to fall asleep. After being refused by l2 publishing houses, the first Harry Potter novel was sold to a small British publishing house.

Now with seven books sold nearly 400 million copies in 64 languages, J. K. Rowling is the highest earning novelist in history. And it all began with the confidence of a friend !

  • 28、Chinese President Xi Jinping announced on July 31 that China's BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (北斗卫星导航系统)(BDS) has been completed and has started providing fill-scale global services that day.

In the 1990s, Chinese government approved and began research and development of a space-based navigation and positioning system aimed at casing the country's heavy dependence on foreign networks. The system is called “BeiDou”. The government has planned a three-step strategy for developing the BDS.

The construction of BDS-1, the first step of the strategy, started in 1994 and was completed in 2000.The BDS-2 system started construction in 2004. By 2012, a total of 14 satellites had been launched to complete the deployment (部署). In November2017.China launched the first two satellites for the BDS-3 system, which started construction in 2009, and officially expanded its regional navigation system into a global network.

In late June, the final satellite to complete BeiDou's third-generation network was lifted by a Long March 3B carrier rocket. After in-orbit tests over the past month, the satellite recently started its formal operations.

Since 2000, 59 BeiDou satellites, including the first four experimental ones, have been launched from Xichang on 44 Long March 3-series rockets, with some of them having retired.

BeiDou began providing services for civilian users in China and other parts of the Asia-Pacific region in December 2012.At the end of 2018, it started providing basic global services. BeiDou offers accurate positioning, navigation and timing, as well as short message communication without the support of a mobile network. The BDS system has helped the country fight against floods, assisting in deformation monitoring, early warning and resident transfer. The services are used in various fields.

It offers an alternative to Russia's GLONASS and the European Union's Galileo system, as well as the United States' GPS.

The operating of BeiDou's full-scale global services is a significant milestone in China's efforts to boost science and technology and strengthen its space industry. The move is a major contribution to the global public-service infrastructure (基础设施) as well as a remarkable strategic achievement of socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era.

【1】How many navigation systems are mentioned in this passage?

    A.2.

  • 29、Imagine being able to see perfectly in the dark. This vision has become a reality thanks to a newly developed technology. Now, by simply wearing a pair of glasses, you can drive safely at night, walk home in the dark, or even explore dark forests and caves without holding a flashlight!

This exciting innovation (创新) came to light at the Australia National University. The technology is composed of a thin film that will be placed on the lenses of regular glasses. It is inexpensive to make, and is lightweight. The thin film is made of nanometer-scale crystals. It is so minute that it is 100 times thinner than a strand of hair. Regardless of its size, its performance is impressive.

The international team has made the invisible visible, and it will be available to all. “Our technology is able to transform infrared (红外线的) light, normally invisible to the human eye, and turn this into images people can clearly see, even at distance,” lead researcher Dr. Rocio Camacho Morales said in the press release. The new device is able to function at room temperature. And as the new technology is not large like its predecessors (前身), it has many future applications. Researchers foresee using this night vision for autonomous vehicle navigation and medical imaging. Once this new night vision is available to all, it could save lives. Drivers will be able to navigate better at night, especially when driving on unlighted roads. Police can use them when searching at night, and hikers who lose their way can feel more confident walking in the dark.

The innovators are excited to move from the lab towards making practical applications available for all. “While this is the first proof-of-concept experiment, we are actively working to further advance the technology,” Mohsen Rahmani, lead developer of the nanoscale crystal films, said. The many uses are exciting and seeing in the dark opens up a new world for all.

【1】What’s the purpose of writing paragraph 1?

A.To introduce the topic of the text.

    B.To give the background information.

C.To guide readers to read the passage.

D.To stress the importance of seeing in the dark.

【2】What does the underlined “minute” in paragraph 2 mean?

    A.Short.

    B.Soft.

    C.Tiny.

    D.Thick.

【3】What can we know about the new technology’s predecessors?

A.They are small for researchers to carry.

B.They will help police to make a search at night.

C.They can make infrared light visible in the dark.

D.They have fewer functions than the new technology.

【4】What does Mohsen Rahmani think of the technology?

    A.It still needs improvement.

B.It is part of the existing technology.

C.It has already been put into practice.

D.Many users feel confident with it.
