二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Everyone gathered around and Paddy read out loud, slowly, his tone growing sadder and sadder. The little headline said: BOXER RECEIVES LIFF SENTENCE.

Frank Cleary, aged 26, professional boxer, was today found guilty of the murder of Albert Gumming, aged 32, laborer, last July. The jury (陪审团) reached its decision after only ten minutes, recommending the most severe punishment to the court. It was, said the Judge, a simple case. Gumming and Cleary had quarreled violently at the Harbour Hotel on July 23rd and police saw Cleary kicking at the head of the unconscious Gumming. When arrested, Cleary was drunk but clear-thinking.

Cleary was sentenced to life imprisonment with hard labour. Asked if he had anything to say, Cleary answered, “Just don’t tell my mother.”

“It happened over three years ago,” Paddy said helplessly. No one answered him or moved, for no one knew what to do. “Just don’t tell my mother,” said Fee numbly(麻木地). “And no one did! Oh, God! My poor, poor Frank!”

Paddy wiped the tears from his face and said. “Fee, pack your things. We’ll go to see him.”

She half-rose before sinking back, her eyes in her small white face stared as if dead. “I can’t go,” she said without a hint of pain, yet making everyone feel that the pain was there. “It would kill him to see me. I know him so well — his pride, his ambition. Let him bear the shame alone, it’s what he wants. We’ve got to help him keep his secret. What good will it do him to see us?”

Paddy was still weeping, not for Frank, but for the life which had gone from Fee’s face, for the dying in her eyes. Frank had always brought bitterness and misfortune, always stood between Fee and himself. He was the cause of her withdrawal from his heart and the hearts of his children. Every time it looked as if there might be happiness for Fee, Frank took it away. But Paddy’s love for her was as deep and impossible to wipe out as hers was for Frank.

So he said, “Well, Fee, we won’t go. But we must make sure he is taken care of. How about if I write to Father Jones and ask him to look out for Frank?”

There was no excitement in the eyes, but a faint pink stole into her cheeks. “Yes, Paddy, do that. Only make sure he knows not to tell Frank we found out. Perhaps it would ease Frank to think for certain that we don’t know.”

【1】Paddy cried because he thought ___________.

A.Frank did kill someone and deserved the punishment

B.Frank should have told Fee what had happened

C.what had happened to Frank was killing Fee

D.Frank had always been a man of bad moral character

【2】The underlined sentence “She half-rose before sinking back…”in Paragraph 6 shows that___________.

A.Fee was so heart-broken that she could hardly stand up

B.Fee didn’t want to upset Paddy by visiting Frank

C.Fee couldn’t leave her family to go to see Frank

D.Fee struggled between wanting to see Frank and respecting his wish

【3】What can be inferred from the passage?

A.The jury and the judge agreed on the Boxer’s Sentence of Life Imprisonment.

B.The police found Gumming unconscious, heavily struck by Frank.

C.The family didn’t find out what had happened to Frank until 3 years later.

D.Frank didn’t want his family to know the sentence to him, most probably out of his pride.

【4】What is Frank and Paddy’s probable relationship with Fee?

A.Frank is Fee’s son and Paddy is Fee’s brother.

B.Frank is Fee’s son and Paddy is Fee’s husband.

C.Frank is Fee’s brother and Paddy is Fee’s lover.

D.Frank is Fee’s lover and Paddy is Fee’s husband.

  • 27、Until recently, several lines of evidence — from fossils genetics, and archaeology — suggested that humans first moved from Africa into Eurasia (the land of Europe and Asia) about 60,000 years ago, quickly replacing other early human species, such as Neanderthals and Denisovans, that they may have met along the way.

However, a series of recent discoveries, including 100,000-year-old human teeth found in a cave in China, have clouded this straightforward statement. And the latest find, a prehistoric jawbone at the Misliya Cave in Israel dating back to nearly 200,000 years ago, which is almost twice as old as any Homo sapiens (智人) remains discovered outside Africa, where our species was thought to have originated from, has added new and unexpected twist.

The find suggests that there were multiple waves of migration across Europe and Asia and could also mean that modern humans in the Middle East were interacting, and possibly mating, with other human species for tens of thousands of years. “Misliya breaks the mould (模式) of existing assumptions of the timing of the first known Homo sapiens in these regions,” said Chris Stringer, head of human origins at the Natural History Museum in London. “It’s important in removing long-lasting-constraint (限制) on our thinking.”

Prof. Hershkovitz, who led the work at Tel Aviv University said, “What Misliya tells us is that modern humans left Africa not 100,000 years ago, but 200,000 years ago. This is revolution in the way we understand the evolution of our own species.” He also added that the record now indicates that humans probably travelled beyond the African continent whenever the climate allowed it. “I don’t believe there was one big departure from Africa,” he said. “I think that throughout hundreds of thousands of years humans were coming in and out of Africa all the time.”

The discovery means that modern humans were potentially meeting and interacting during a longer period with other ancient human groups, providing more opportunity for cultural and biological exchanges. It also raises interesting questions about the fate of the earliest modern human pioneers. Genetic data from modern-day populations around the world strongly suggest that everyone outside Africa can trace their ancestors back to a group that left around 60,000 years ago. So, the inhabitants of the Misliya Cave are probably not the ancestors of anyone alive today, and scientists can only guess why their branch of the family tree came to an end.

【1】What does the underlined word “they” refer to in Paragraph 1?

A.Early human species living in Europe.

    B.Neanderthals and Denisovans.

C.People first moving from Africa into Eurasia.

D.Ancient people living in Africa all the time.

【2】What does the Misliya discovery suggest?

A.Our ancestors were powerful and kind of aggressive.

B.Our ancestors left Africa much earlier than thought.

C.The origins of modern humans are from Europe.

D.Homo sapiens, Neanderthals and Denisovans once lived together.

【3】What can be learned from Prof Hershkovitz’s words?

A.Climate was a big factor in human migration from Africa.

B.There was a large-scale human migration from Africa.

C.Human migration was occasional in Africa 200,000 years ago.

D.The Misliya find is against our understanding of human evolution.

【4】What can we infer about those living in Misliya 200, 000 years ago according to the last paragraph?

A.They were ancestors of people living in China.

B.They left evidence for their mysterious disappearance in history.

C.They probably contributed little to present-day people genetically.

D.They could be traced by their remains left on their travelling route.

  • 28、Like most people, Michael Scullin, associate professor of psychology and neuroscience at Baylor University, likes to listen to some light music before going to bed. However, one day when he realised he was waking up in the middle of the night with a song stuck in his head, he saw an opportunity to study how music and particularly songs stuck in the head might affect sleep patterns.

Scullin’s recent study investigated the relationship between music listening and sleep, focusing on a rarely-explored mechanism (机制): involuntary musical imagery (无意识音像), or “earworms”, when a song or tune replays over and over in a person’s mind.

The study involved a survey and a lab experiment. The survey involved 209 participants who completed a series of surveys on sleep quality, music listening habits and earworm frequency, including how often they experienced an earworm while trying to fall asleep, waking up in the middle of the night and immediately upon waking in the morning.

In the experimental study, 50 participants were brought into Scullin’s Sleep Neuroscience and Cognition Laboratory at Baylor, where three popular and catchy songs were played before bedtime — Taylor Swift’s Shake It Off, Carly Rae Jepsen’s Call Me Maybe and Journey’s Don’t Stop Believin’.

“We randomly asked participants to listen to the original versions or the instrumental versions of the songs. Participants responded whether and when they experienced an earworm. Then we analyzed whether that impacted their nighttime sleep physiology,” says Scullin.

In both the survey and experimental study, earworms were reported throughout the night by participants, with those catching an earworm taking longer to fall asleep, spending more time in the light stages of sleep, and waking up more times during the night. Besides, the instrumental versions of the songs caused about twice as many earworms as (and more sleep problems than) the original versions.

“We thought that people would have earworms at bedtime when they were trying to fall asleep, but we certainly didn’t know that people would report regularly waking up from sleep with an earworm,” says Scullin.

Past studies have linked late-night music listening with better sleep in those with insomnia (失眠), perhaps because it can relax the body. The researchers behind the new study suggest that actually it might be worse for our sleep — that even after the tunes stop, our brains continue to process them for several hours.

Scullin suggests avoiding listening to music right before bed to limit the chance of a catchy tune taking hold in our minds. Engaging in some other cognitive activity before sleeping, like making a list of jobs for the next day, might also help clear the mind.

【1】Why is Michael Scullin’s experience mentioned at the beginning of the text?

A.To add some background information of the study.

B.To offer an example of how earworms affect sleep.

C.To show concern for the negative effects of bedtime music.

D.To introduce the study on music listening and sleep quality.

【2】What did the researchers want to find out?

A.What kind of music is good for people’s sleep.

B.How bedtime music helps us have a good sleep.

C.Whether we benefit or suffer from bedtime music.

D.Why it is difficult for our brains to get rid of earworms.

【3】What are the researchers surprised to find?

A.Earworms can badly affect people’s sleep quality.

B.Earworms can frequently happen before one’s sleep.

C.Earworms can make it difficult for people to fall asleep.

D.The effect of earworms varies with the versions of the music.

【4】What does Scullin advise us to do?

A.To only listen to our favorite music.

B.To clear our mind right before bed.

C.To avoid listening to music at night.

D.To enjoy some light music before bed.

  • 29、Many people say dolphins are very intelligent. They seem to be able to think, understand, and learn things quickly. But are they smart like humans or more than cats or dogs?Dolphins use their brains differently from people. But scientists say dolphin intelligence and human intelligence are similar in some ways. How?

    Fact 1:Talk to me

Like humans, every dolphin has its own "name". The name is a special whistle. Each dolphin chooses a specific whistle for itself, usually by its first birthday.Actually, scientists think dolphins, like people, "talk" to each other about a lot of things, such as their ages, their feelings, or finding food. And, like humans, dolphins use a system of sounds and body languages to communicate. But understanding their conversations is not easy for humans. No one speaks dolphin's language yet, but some scientists are trying to learn.

    Fact 2:Let's play

Dolphins are also social animals. They live in groups, and they often join others from different groups to play games and have fun—just like people. In fact, playing together is something only intelligent animals do.

    Fact 3:Fishermen's helper

Dolphins and humans are similar in another way:both make plans to get something they want.In the seas of southern Brazil, for example, dolphins use an interesting strategy(策略)to get food. When fish are near a boat, dolphins show signs to the fishermen to put their nets in the water.Using this method, the men can catch a lot of fish. What is the advantage for the dolphins in doing so?They get to eat some of the fish.

【1】What does a dolphin often use as its "name"?

    A.A body language.

    B.A special whistle.

    C.Its feeling.

    D.Its age.

【2】How do dolphins help fishermen catch fish?

    A.By playing with other fish.

    B.By following fishing boats.

C.By leading the fish into the net.

D.By showing signs to the fishermen.

【3】What is the passage mainly about?

    A.Dolphins are smarter than humans.

    B.Dolphins make friends with humans.

C.Dolphins teach humans to speak their language.

D.Dolphins and humans are similar in some ways.
