二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、

Allen: I’ve never been in big fan of the bears, especially the vacation show. On my last trip to Disneyland (1999) we passed it by, because we didn’t want to spend the time on something we didn’t really enjoy. If we’d known it would be closed by our next visit, I’m sure we would have watched it one more time. I was just making the point that it wasn’t until Disney announced the closing that this feeling suddenly sprang(弹跳) up for the Country Bear Show at Disneyland. But I think the idea of keeping some attractions open forever regardless of the number of visitors it gets is a mistake. We all have great memories of the Bears, but clearly very few kids today (or I should say families today) are making those same memories from this show. That may be a sad fact, but it’s a fact. Isn’t it right to use the Country Bear space to bring in a more popular attraction so that more kids today can make those magic memories of an attraction they like? Otherwise aren’t we just telling kids today that they “have to” make great memories of the Bears, when it’s obvious that the kids themselves are not enjoying the Bears like we did?

Roger: I am very disappointed that they have decided to retire the Country Bear Playhouse. I remember going to the show as a child, and still enjoyed it as a teenager, and now young adult. It is true that there aren’t a lot of shows left at DL and with this one closing even less. Being at DL does require a lot of walking, and it is nice to have a few attractions that are a place to sit and enjoy a good show. I understand that DL has to develop, but there has to be some history to the Disneyland that Walt Disney first designed. There should be some parts of DL that just never go away, and this is one of them. By the time I have children it looks like there won’t be any attractions that I can say I went to as a child at the rate they are going.

Now the Bears are leaving, What I want to say is: stop trying to compete with everyone! DL is the best, because of attractions like the Country Bears. If DL insists on destroying all of its magic to make way for the latest, well, then it might as well be just another theme park.

【1What news might get people talking about the problem of the Country Bears?

    A. The Country Bear Playhouse will be closed.

    B. There will be a new attraction for our guests at Disneyland.

    C. The number of visitors to the Country Bear Playhouse is falling.

    D. The Bears will retire because of old age and can’t give shows any more.

【2】Allen spoke mainly to get his point across that ____________.

    A. the Bears will be missed

    B. We should tell kids today that they “have to” make memories of the Bears

    C. The long-time attraction ought to make way for a future attraction

    D. People never care about what they have until all is lost

【3】Which is the best choice to complete Roger’s idea: “The Country Bears have been a part of Disneyland for nearly 30 years, _______________.”

    A. and I feel it is time to give our bears a good rest

    B. but anyway, the attraction has lost interest

    C. but I know that Disneyland will always be changing, and I accept that

    D. and I am sad that the Bears will be leaving

  • 27、Northern Europeans spend a lot of time in their cold and cloudy winters planning their summer holidays. They are proud of their healthy color when they return home after the holiday. But they also know that a certain amount of sunshine is good for their bodies and general health.

In ancient Greece people knew about the healing(治疗) powers of the sun, but this knowledge was lost. At the end of the nineteenth century a Danish doctor, Niels Finsen, began to study the effect of sunlight on certain diseases, especially diseases of the skin. He was interested not only in natural sunlight but also in artificially (人造地) produced rays. Sunlight began to play a more important part in curing sick people.

A Swiss doctor, Auguste Rollier, made full use of the sun in his hospital at Lysine. Lysine is a small village high up in the Alps. The position is important: the rays of the sun with the greatest healing power are the infra-red (红外线的) and ultra-violet (紫外线的) rays; but ultra-violet rays are too easily lost in fog and the polluted air near industrial towns. Dr. Roller found that sunlight, fresh air and good food cure a great many diseases. He was particularly successful in curing certain forms of tuberculosis with his “sun-cure”.

There were a large number of children in Dr. Roller’s hospital. He decided to start a school where sick children could be cured and at the same time continue to learn. It was not long before his school was full.

In winter, wearing only shorts, socks and boots, the children put on their skis after breakfast and left the hospital. They carried small desks and chairs as well as their school books. Their teacher led them over the snow until they reached a slope which faced the sun and was free from cold winds. There they set out their desks and chairs, and school began.

Although they wore hardly any clothes, Roller’s pupils were very seldom cold. That was because their bodies were full of energy which they got from the sun. But the doctor knew that sunshine can also be dangerous. If, for example, tuberculosis is attacking the lungs, unwise sunbathing may do great harm.

Today there is not just one school in the sun. There are several in Switzerland, and since Switzerland is not the only country which has the right conditions, there are similar schools in other places.

【1】According to the passage, when did sunlight begin to play a more important part in the treatment of disease?

    A. From ancient times.

    B. At the end of the nineteenth century.

    C. Not until this century.

    D. Only very recently.

【2】 Why are a Danish doctor and a Swiss doctor mentioned in the second and third paragraphs?

    A. Because they both made use of sunlight to treat illness.

    B. Because they were the first people who used sunlight for treatment.

    C. Because they were both famous European doctors.

    D. Because they used sunlight in very different ways.

【3】Dr Roller set up a “sun-cure” school probably for the reason that _______.

    A. most children could stay in his hospital

    B. children could study while being treated

    C. the school was expected to be full of pupils

    D. the school was high up in the mountains

【4】What can be inferred from the last paragraph of the passage?

    A. “Sun-cure” schools are becoming popular everywhere.

    B. Switzerland is the only country where “sun-cure” schools are popular.

    C. Proper conditions are necessary for the running of a “sun-cure” school.

    D. “Sun-cure” schools are found in countries where there is a lot of sunshine.

  • 31、DirectionsComplete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

Cure isn’t a word normally used in the 1 of AIDS. For most of the 35 years since HIV, the virus responsible for the disease, was first identified, doctors have viewed the notion of a cure as more 2 than fact.

That’s because HIV is a virus unlike any other. It disables the very immune cells that are 3 to destroy it, carrying out the ultimate deadly ambush(埋伏)whenever the guard of immune 4 comes down, months or sometimes even years later.

Yet for the first time in the HIV epidemic that 5 affects nearly 37 million people worldwide, some experts are starting to aim for a cure cautiously. The National Institutes of HealthNIHis funding HIV cure efforts and advocacy groups like amfAR are also 6 resources into not just treating HIV, but also finding ways to eliminate it completely.

“Absolutely HIV can be cured,”says Rowena Johnston, vice president and director of research for amfAR.“The question is how.”

Doctors today have no trouble keeping HIV under control in people who are infected, thanks to antiretroviralARVdrugs, which stop the virus from replicating(复制). If it is not making more copies of itself. HIV cannot spread to infect new cells. That can 7 into healthier, longer lives for people who are HIV-positive.

Powerful as the current drug treatments are, they can’t actually 8 the body of infected cells. For self-preservation, some HIV lies latent(潜伏性的)inside certain immune cells. These are the viruses that come coaring back when people stop taking their medications.

But the latest report this month revealed the strongest evidence that these latent viruses can be activated and eliminated, at least in animals. Dr. Dan Barouch and his colleagues showed that a drug that stimulates the immune system, 9 with a powerful antibody, prevented HIV from roaring back in five of 11 animals, six months after they stopped taking ARVs.“I think our data raises the 10 that an intervention achieving a functional cure is possible,”says Barouch.
