26、The ocean sustains all life on our planet. It provides food to eat and oxygen to breathe, while playing a key role in making our climate less extreme. But the ocean is becoming considerably warmer, affecting its ability to sustain life. The high temperatures seen around the Mediterranean this year are indicative of rising global temperatures. Research found the sea temperatures recorded in the Mediterranean over the period 2015-2019 were the highest since the recording began in 1982.
Much of the research on ocean heatwaves finds that they affect certain habitats particularly strongly, including coral reefs, seagrass and seaweed. Ocean heatwaves were found to be responsible for the loss of up to 80% of the population of some Mediterranean species between 2015 and 2019.
A mass death event is a single, terrible incident that rapidly destroys large numbers of a species. Over two-thirds of the deaths of ocean creatures occurring on the hard sea floor were in the waters with a depth of only 0-25 meters, which are subject to particularly intense warming and are home to some of the most biodiverse ecosystems in the Mediterranean.
Foundation species are critical in structuring an ecosystem. They act as nursery grounds, provide protection against enemies, and serve as a food source. Foundation species are the key to sustaining biodiversity, and their loss will have impacts on other species. As foundation species, the loss of corals, seagrass and seaweed is particularly concerning.
Additionally, ocean heatwaves often result in displacement(被迫迁徙). Evidence suggests that the exceptional temperatures seen across the Mediterranean this summer may be driving extensive mass displacement. In Greece, scientists have observed a huge increase of invasive(入侵的) species from warmer waters. This includes the lionfish and silver-cheeked toadfish, both of which are poisonous, and carry the potential to cause considerable ecological damage.
Within some branches of the scientific community, the recent intensity and frequency of ocean heatwaves suggests we have arrived at a “climate endgame”. This involves preparation for the full consequences of widespread ocean species death, if emissions are not controlled. The likely damaging Mediterranean ocean heatwaves of this year will only add fuel to such discussions.

27、Nowadays, we’re now eating twice as much fish as we were 50 years ago. While this growing demand for seafood is good for our health, it’s harming life in the oceans. Almost 60 percent of global fish are fully exploited (开发) and 30 percent are actually disappearing.
By 2050, with a predicted human population of around 10 billion and climate change decreasing fish populations at a rate of 20 to 30 percent for every 1°C rise in sea temperature, we may be seeking novel fish sources.
But fear not. A solution could be in sight, say researchers who have figured out the area of ocean suitable for aquaculture (水产养殖). The study, led by Rebecca Gentry of the University of California, Santa Barbara, identified areas up to 200 metres deep that are right for farming fish and shellfish, but currently unexploited.
We would only need to farm a tiny part of the space identified — no larger than Lake Michigan — to match current production from wild-caught fisheries (渔业), the team says. Better still, if we used all ocean space suitable for aquaculture, we could produce as much as 15 billion tons of fish annually. That’s 100 times more than we currently eat each year.
All of this suggests we could farm our way out of the fisheries crisis and possibly global food security problems. People want to eat more seafood, and we seem to have plentiful space to farm it. It sounds so simple – except that it’s not.
For starters, not all suitable areas will become fish farms for many reasons, such as worries about habitat damage or local disagreement. Then there’s the bigger problem of unintended effects. Rather than save wild fisheries, aquaculture can denigrate them further by spreading disease and pollution, not to mention the senseless practice of using small wild fish as feed for larger farmed fish.
Knowing that we have enough space we need to grow aquaculture offers some comfort. But there are also plenty of warnings. And if we continue consuming large amounts of wild-caught fish, we may soon have to accept that our diet will change in ways we haven’t expected.
【1】What is the main reason for farming fish in the ocean?
A.Ocean exploitation.
B.Environmental protection.
C.Growing need for fish.
D.The diversity of fish.

【3】What does the underlined word “denigrate” in paragraph 6 refer to?

B.Benefiting.
C.Polluting.
D.Promoting.
【4】What’s the author’s attitude towards ocean fish farms?

28、The mirror self-recognition test was dreamed up in the 1960’s by Gordon Gallup, Jr., a scientist now with the State University of New York. Back then, he was a graduate student taking a course in psychology, and the students were asked to come up with an idea for an experiment.
“I was washing my face in front of a mirror one day, says Grallup. It occurred to me wouldn’t it be interesting to see if other animals could recognize themselves in mirrors?”
Still looking at the mirror, he realized he could test an animal by secretly marking its face with some kind of red dye (染料), to see if it could use the mirror to access these strange red marks.
No such test had been done before, even though people had long observed animals looking into mirrors. Most species tend to treat a mirror image as a stranger to be courted (献殷勤) or attacked. Some scientists thought that primates (灵长类) might do better. Charles Darwin once watched with interest as an orangutan (红毛猩猩) named Jenny made faces at a mirror.
When Gallup started doing experiments with chimps (黑猩猩), a few years after he came up with his test, he found that at first the chimps acted as if the mirror image were another animal. But then, after a couple of days they began using the mirror to examine parts of their bodies like their teeth.
When Gallup put red dye on their faces, the chimps later woke up and reacted to the unexpected mirror image as if they understood that the marks were on their own faces.
In Gallup’s view, only three species have mirror self-recognition: chimps, orangutans, and humans. Others, though, think the list is long. Diana Reiss, a scientist at Hunter College, has tested both dolphins and elephants and beeves that both show signs of recognizing themselves in mirrors.
【1】Who first came up with the idea of the mirror self-recognition test?
A.A university student.
B.A zoo keeper in New York.
C.A teacher in Hunter College.
D.A scientist in a research organization.
【2】What did Gordon Gallup intend the red dye for?
A.Marking his image in the mirror.
B.Marking his own face before washing.
C.Marking the face of the animal to be tested.
D.Marking an animal without self-recognition ability.
【3】How did chimps react to their image in the mirror?
A.They showed no interest in it.
B.They examined that image carefully.
C.They took it as another animal at first.
D.They immediately recognized what it was.
