二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   The world's elderly population is increasing. The number of old people, those who are aged 60 years or older, is expected to more than double in 2050 and is growing faster than the number of all younger age groups across the globe. This trend comes with an increasing demand for caregivers who are able to provide 24-hour care, not only at hospitals or nursing homes, but also at private homes and apartments.

Robotic assistants are expected to become increasingly marketable and reach 450.000 by 2045 because of the expected caregiver shortage in the United States. But Professor Ramses Martinez says, "Unfortunately, the outside hard structure(结构)of recent care-giving robots prevents them from getting along well with each other safely. After all, would you leave old people who are physically or mentally ill in the hands of a robot?"

Recent advances in material science have enabled the fabrication (制造)of robots with bodies that have the ability to reshape themselves when touched. But the complex design, fabrication, and control of soft robots recently hamper people from commercializing this technology and using them at home.

Martinez and the colleagues have developed a new design method that may enable the quick design and fabrication of soft robots using a 3D printer. The design process needs a few steps. First, a user makes a computer-aided design (CAD)file with the shape of the robot. The user then paints the CAD file to show which directions the different joints of the soft robot will move at. Finally a fast computer program takes a few seconds to change the CAD model into a 3D architected soft machine printed by a 3D printer. The architected soft robots move like humans, except that instead of muscles(肌肉), they rely on tiny motors that pull ropes tied to the ends of their hands and legs. They can be squeezed and pulled to more than 900 percent of their initial length. "They can perform complex movements with ease, and this work makes a step forward toward the development of autonomous soft robots." Martinez says. The technology is patented. The researchers are looking for partners to test and commercialize their technology.

【1】What does the author mainly want to express in Paragraph 1?

A.That more and more nursing people will be needed!

B.That more hospitals will be built in the future.

C.That the burden on young people will increase greatly.

D.That private homes will be more suitable for the old.

【2】What can be inferred from Professor Ramses Martinez's words?

A.Robots have played a big role in humans' life.

B.Robotic assistants' characteristics have changed a lot.

C.Robots don't know how to communicate with each other.

D.Present care-giving robots aren't very suitable for the old.

【3】What's the main idea of Paragraph 4?

A.The procedure for designing the soft robots.

B.The importance of CAD files to the soft robots.

C.The steps of the soft robots to finish some work.

D.The characteristics and application of the soft robots.

【4】What advantage do the architected soft robots have over the conventional ones?

    A.Being much cheaper.

    B.Being more solid.

    C.Being much lighter in weight.

D.Being more flexible in their movements.

  • 27、   Spending Christmas in a foreign country can be a truly eye-opening experience, especially since it’s easy to believe that as a worldwide festival, most countries probably celebrate it in a fairly similar manner. Being from the UK, Christmas for me means spending time with family and friends, exchanging presents, eating and drinking, and, of course, hiding from the cold. In Colombia, however, Christmas is viewed much more as a time which devotes itself to religion.

With celebrations beginning on 7 December, Columbia is recognized as having the longest Christmas celebrations period in the world. The celebrations generally begin in the evening with the lighting of candles, either in the streets, parks or outside people’s homes. Cities are lit up by candles, as this day marks the beginning of the Christmas period. Although decorations have been up since early November, another tradition in Colombia is that during the nine days before Christmas, family members and friends meet up to pray, sing songs and share traditional foods at home.

Probably the biggest surprise for me has been the music people listen to during the Christmas period. At first, you could easily mistake these songs for the classic salsa, which is played all year round. However, after asking a Colombian if it really felt like Christmas music, they explained to me that the songs are loved more for the memories they symbolize than for the way they sound, and that Colombia has been through so many dark periods in history, it was important to hold on to the good memories of years gone past.

Being in a country like Colombia during this festive period has taught me that  you don’t need to be religious to take part in these Christmas traditions.

1What’s the authors opinion of Christmas?

    A.It isn’t a global festival. B.It isn’t a time for being alone.

C.It is mainly devoted to religion. D.It’s celebrated only in some places.

2What can we learn about the Christmas music?

A.It is celebrated in the same way as in the UK.

B.It is celebrated mainly as a religious festival.

C.It is celebrated for nine days or so.

D.It is celebrated with lanterns and fireworks.

3What do Colombians do during the Christmas celebration period?

A.Enjoy traditional foods. B.Go to the church together.

    C.Learn abut home decorations. D.Have a one-month-long holiday.

4Colombians love the songs mainly because ______.

    A.they sound extremely wonderful

B.they express best wishes for the future

C.they represent good memories of the past

D.they have been passed down for generations

  • 29、From Dusner (3 speakers) to Kelabit (5 thousand) to Yiddish (1.5 million), these languages are spread, but like the Indian elephant, they are in danger of dying out. Dr. Chris Mazdzer, a researcher at Oxford University, organizing a meeting on endangered languages thinks there could be a novel way to keep minority languages alive: social media. He says, “Because young people text each other how they speak, even if they don’t know how to spell it.”

Minority languages are often at risk of being drowned(淹死)out by the bigger ones, which are spoken at school and in the media. But the appearance of Facebook and Twitter might just have the unexpected effect. Dr. Mazdzer speaks Frisian, which has 350,000 speakers. Communicating with his own language has given him thought about how languages could be saved in the future. “In Friesland, young people who don’t learn much Frisian at school send each messages on social media in Frisian”, he says. In this way, a new generation of Frisian speakers keeps the language alive.

Though many of these languages only have a few speakers, it’s not just a small number of speakers that make a language endangered. Some languages were once widely spoken, but lost speakers over time. This can happen for many reasons, like only one language spoken in school or people moving away from their home and losing their language.

Tweeting and texting in Frisian (or Sorbian, or Breton) is not enough in the long term, though. There are many other things we need to do. But why is a language worth saving in the first place? Because our languages are natural creations. Natural beauty needs to be protected.

1What can prevent a language from dying out according to Dr. Mazdzer?

    A. Speaking and spelling it frequently.

    B. Communicating in it on social media.

    C. Keeping reading texts written in the language.

    D. Organizing meetings on endangered language.

2How did Dr Mazdzer find a way to keep a language alive?

    A. Through the lab experiments.   B. Through his early study.

    C. Through his first-hand experience.   D. Through the analysis of numbers.

3What’s the major cause of languages’ becoming endangered according to Paragraph 3?

    A. Losing speakers over time.

    B. A small number of speakers.

    C. Being drowned out by bigger languages.

    D. The appearance of Facebook and Twitter.

4For what purpose does the author write the passage?

    A. To tell us the danger of losing our native languages.

    B. To show the importance of bigger languages.

    C. To appeal to us to protect the minority languages.

    D. To call on us to have more communication with others.

五、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 32、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Sports are more than competitions. To me, they mean growth under the care of others. I learned this the hard way.

I used to be very shy and often felt lonely. I was afraid of physical education. My classmates often laughed at me. “Look at that girl,” they said. “Her feet don’t leave the ground when she runs!” Their words embarrassed me. Moreover, whenever there were some competitive games, no one in the class liked to have me as their team member. As a result, I often ended up looking at others enjoy their games.

Things would go on like that but for a sports meet. By mistake, my name was put on the list of the women’s 1,500 meters race. By the time people found the mistake, it was too late. My deskmate was a natural athlete. She said to me, “I couldn’t run that race in your place, because I’ve signed up for three events already.” Other girls of the class said the same.

I was dumbfounded (目瞪口呆). 1,500 meters! Running against the best runners from other classes! And in front of students of the entire school! It would be the worst nightmare (恶梦) I’d ever have!

“You still have time to catch up because there is still one month before the sports meet,” they said.

My deskmate patted me on the shoulder, “Cool! You will run for our class! And we will train together.” Yes, this is not just for myself, but for my class too, I said to myself. But still, 1,500 meters to me was like Mount Everest to a beginning climber. Every afternoon after class, my deskmate ran beside me.

One month certainly couldn’t make me a good runner. But when I was standing behind the start line, I no longer felt lonely or afraid. I saw my classmates standing by the tracks waving at me as if to run beside me.

    注意:

    1. 续写词数应为150左右;
