  • 26、How to Develop Courage by Overcoming Daily Fears

Sometimes when thinking of courage, we think it only applies to rare and uncommon situations. Yet our ordinary lives can also be full of courage, even if we are not facing the end of a gun, a wild animal or a dangerous criminal. Courage doesn’t just mean doing heroic acts. 【1】 In fact, where there is fear on a daily basis, there are opportunities for you to show your courage. Here are some suggestions to develop courage by overcoming daily fears.

    ● Recognize your fears.

By realizing that you’re fearful, you are more likely to get to the bottom of what your fear is. 【2】 You might come to understand that you’re afraid of failing or taking chances. You may be fearful simply because you don’t have confidence in yourself. The key is not to dwell on (细想) your fear, but to understand what it is and what you’re worried about.

    ● Ask yourself what is the worst that can happen.

If you hesitate to take action, ask yourself this: What’s the worst that can happen? Then prepare to accept it. Then go on to improve on the worst. Is failure the worst thing that can happen? No, absolutely not. 【3】 Doing nothing is actually the worst thing that can happen. When you take no action, you are sure to get nowhere.

    ● Take action.

Courage comes from taking action. 【4】 You need to act to overcome your fear. Your action may put you into discomfort, but you have to just do it. And your action can prevent you from being stuck.

    【5】.

To build up your confidence, you need to do the same thing over and over again. Soon you will discover that less courage is needed because you have already gained mastery (精通). You are able to move decisively (果断地) forward.

    A.Share your fears with others.

    B.Practice, practice and practice.

C.So you are already in a comfort zone.

D.You cannot think courage comes just in one day.

E.Each undesired result is just one more step towards your goal.

F.Find out what is truly holding you back.

G.You needn’t wait for an emergency to occur to develop courage.

Everyone is equal and is willing to cooperate.

【3】 some members undoubtedly will have different strengths than others do. Ideally, however, over the long-term life of the group, everyone will pitch in equally, be willing to help and use their strengths.

People show up on time and show up regularly

All group members need to show upon time and consistently if the group is going to work. The point of the group is to improve everyone’s understanding of material. 【4】

    【5】

If you have an effective, positive study group, you’ll know it after your meetings. You’ll have gained a better understanding of the material saved yourself some time by collaborating with like minds and perhaps, even enjoyed yourself in the process. • 28、Looking back at the history of the Earth, thousands of animals have died out. Many animals disappear when their environment changes. For example, some scientists believe that dinosaurs died out because a large meteorite (陨石) fell on Earth from outer space. This changed the weather conditions of our planet. Certain plants became rare, and the huge animals died.

In recent times, more animals have disappeared because of humans. In the early 1900s, animals and plants were dying out at the rate of 27, 000 per year, according to Harvard biologist Edward Wilson. And the number of extinctions continues at a high rate in the twenty-first century.

One of the most important causes of extinction is having no place to live. When populations increase, countries clear land for agriculture and for housing. Forests, wetlands, and grasslands disappear, and humans enter the living areas of animals. Animals lose their land. In East Africa, for example, hundreds of wild animals used to live across the lands. Nowadays elephants are sharing their space with farmers. Few large animals live in national parks.

Another problem that large animals face is hunters who kill elephants for their teeth, tigers for their skin, and so on. The hunters can sell the animal parts for plenty of money. There seems to be no escape for the animals.

Toward the end of the nineteenth century, environmental experts saw the need to protect the environment and animals, and they created national parks. The first national park in the world was Yellowstone, in the northwestern United States, built in 1872. Later many other national parks were built around the world. Now there are more than 100 national parks in 120 countries. They help to protect many of the world’s wild animals.

    A.The people who love animals.

B.The people who are hurt by animals.

C.The people who are afraid of animals.

D.The people who kill animals for money.

【4】Which of the following can best show the structure of the passage? (①= Paragraph 1 ... )
