二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Phoenix, Arizona, the USA was shaken by a big sandstorm recently. It was a huge dust storm that struck Phoenix a little after 7:00 p.m. local time.

Arizona has sandstorms particularly during the monsoon(季风) season which usually starts from mid-June until the end of September. However, this was so far the biggest. The cloud of dust turned day into night. Some trees were downed, gardens were destroyed and it cut off power for thousands of local people along the area, but luckily no death happened. A number of the people’s pools became dirty with dust. People who lived in Phoenix for more than 40 years said that this was the first time they had experienced this huge dust storm. It could greatly influence people’s health.

The big dust cloud started in Tucson traveling north across the desert. The huge storm ran up to the 60 miles per hour. It was more than 100 miles wide and a mile high. Besides Phoenix and nearby cities, the storm also reached Yuma area in southwestern and far western Arizona. It reduced the visibility (能见度) in these areas, putting off the flights at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

The storm only takes place in Arizona, the Sahara Desert and areas of the Middle East, because of the dry environment and large amounts of sand. Because of the serious shortage of rain, there’s a large possibility that the water is polluted because of the storm.

1In what season do sandstorms usually take place in Arizona?

A.In fall and winter B.In summer and fall

C.In winter and spring D.In spring and summer

2The underlined word “this” in Paragraph2 refers to ________.

    A.the storm B.the wind

    C.the desert D.the state

3It is fortunate that though the big sandstorm happened, __________.

    A.people’s health was not influenced

    B.it didn’t do harm to people’s gardens

C.all the local people in the area survived

D.the electricity power was not at all affected

4Sandstorms take place in Arizona as a result of ________.

A.its severe dryness and lots of sand B.its being too far away from the sea

C.its being close to the Sahara Desert D.its looking like areas of the Middle East

5What does the passage mainly talk about?

    A.Phoenix, Arizona has more sandstorms.

B.Sandstorms do a great deal of harm to people

C.We must do something to prevent sandstorms.

D.Phoenix, Arizona experienced a huge sandstorm.

  • 27、Spider monkeys know that the best way to find food is in a group. But when they divide to hunt for fruit, there’s no random(随意性) pairing off. Researchers have found that they use collective computation(群体计算) when they break up into teams.

Typically, the older females lead the rest of the younger monkeys, having the final say in group activities. But that’s not the case for wild spider monkeys living in a protected area near Punta Laguna, Mexico.

When they’re ready to search for food, the monkeys form teams without a single leader picking who goes into which group. Instead, each monkey decides which group to join and when to move to another group. The result, say researchers, is that the monkeys are collectively computing good team sizes given the availability(可获性) of food in the forest.

“The spider monkeys seem to be collecting information about resources by forming these small teams, so that as a group they know their environment better than anyone does on its own,” lead study author, Gabriel Ramos-Fernandez of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, said.

To study the animals’ behavior, researchers spent two years recording 47 different spider monkeys for five hours each day. For hunting for food, they usually formed groups of 2 to 17 monkeys. Researchers worked together with the scientists at the Santa Fe Institute in New Mexico to find out how a spider monkey decided to stay with or leave a group. Their study found that the monkeys’ decisions were influenced by the decisions of the other monkeys on the team. They would feel out their teammates about the best size and then make their own decisions accordingly.

The results produced teams of many different sizes, which were helpful in finding fruit in the forest. The researchers said that collectively computed sizes were sometimes not a perfect match based on the food that was available. They suggest a similar study should be used to examine how other groups or systems work, such as flocks of birds or schools of fish.

【1】How do spider monkeys living near Punta Laguna differ from the typical ones?

A.They can live better even in bad weather conditions.

B.The sizes of their teams are decided by each of them.

C.The older monkeys play a leading role in a team.

D.They usually take turns to look for food.

【2】How do you understand the underlined part in Paragraph2?

    A.Spreading the word.

    B.Winning all the games.

    C.Making the final decisions.

    D.Getting the most delicious food.

【3】What will probably cause a spider monkey to leave its team?

    A.Its teammates’ choices.

    B.The sudden danger that appears.

    C.The unfair treatment from teammates.

D.Its disappointment with the amount of food.

【4】What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A.Spider monkeys can’t offer help to each other in a group.

B.Spider monkeys’ collective computation is not always useful.

C.The researchers will do a further study about spider monkeys.

D.Birds also use collective computation when they form groups.

  • 29、The CEO and founder of house-builder Project Etopia, Joseph Daniel, had unstable start in life. “My father was always drunk and my mother had mental disorder when I was 15. I’ve lived on the street and I need to do this,” says the 27-year-old young man. He left school without any qualifications.

Far from seeing it as a shortcoming, the hardship he himself experienced is what drives him to take on the challenge of solving the UK’s housing crisis and dealing with climate change at the same time by building high-tech eco-homes that ordinary people cannot only afford, but will also really want to live in.

The homes that Daniel wants to build are not traditional housings. They are made up of several parts and each part is made in Daniel’s own factory in Cheshire. Traditional houses take months to complete, while his homes can be put together easily on site due to being partially pre-built in the factory. The firm’s plan in Corby, Northamptonshire, is a village that will consist of 47 homes, the first four of which were each built in nine days.

Houses are not only faster to build, but will also have smart technology built in and be much more energy efficient than the average home. With solar panels, Daniel says he can build houses that will generate more power than they use, potentially making up for some of the six tons of carbon emitted annually by the “typical” house as a result of the heat and power required.

“I want to slow climate change through housing,” he says. “It’s our responsibility as humans. That’s what our project is about. If you can get the economics and the environment right, you can make things better.”

【1】What can we know about Daniel from the passage?

A.He was qualified as an engineer after graduation.

B.He was abandoned by his parents when he was a child.

C.He was inspired by his own experience to deal with housing crisis.

D.He was forced to take the task of housing problem by his parents.

【2】What can we infer from paragraph 3?

A.Daniel’s houses are similar to traditional ones.

B.Daniel’s houses are partially built in advance.

C.Daniel’s firm produces the houses as a whole.

D.Daniel’s firm has built 47 homes in a village.

【3】Which of the following best describes Daniel’s houses?

    A.Traditional but comfortable.

    B.Expensive but convenient.

    C.Green and advanced.

    D.Fashionable and modern.

    【4】What’s the passage mainly about?

A.It introduces a talented house builder and his achievements.

B.It’s about Daniel’s unique way of solving housing and climate problems.

C.It tells us how to build houses faster and make them more affordable.

D.It stresses the importance of smart technology in house building.
