  • 27、60 or so men and women are gathering outside of the Emergency Food Shelf in the city of Burlington. Inside, volunteer students from the University of Vermont (UVM) are working busily to bake chicken, re-heat donated pizza, chop vegetables, make peanut butter and sandwiches, and put bananas and beverages (饮料)within easy reach of anyone who comes through the door.

Six nights a week, the Salvation Army makes dinner for the hungry. But on Sunday, the Army's day of rest, the UVM kids take over and make sure that anyone who's hungry gets fed.

This year the program is headed by a tall, blonde chemistry major. At age 22, senior Carly Hodgins has been a part of this group for four years and is a masterful organizer.

“Time to open up!” Carly yells.

The door swings open. Men and women who've been waiting outside silently walk into the building. Ten steps inside the door, each man or woman picks up a waiting plate and the students start piling it with food. Every person gets a portion(一份)of meat, vegetables, salad, potatoes, and pizza.

Carly stands at the end of the food line and offers a beverage. "Apple juice?” she asks, looking straight into the eyes of each diner. "Orange juice?” Her smile is a flash of sunshine.

I remember words buried long ago in my heart: “I am hungry and you give me food. I am thirsty and you give me something to drink. I am a stranger and you welcome me.

When the last meal has been served and the last diner has gone back into the darkness! wipe down a steel table in the kitchen and think about what these kids have done. Tonight, no one in Burlington will go hungry.

C.They get it at the end of the food line.

I had worried myself sick over Simon’s mother coming to see me. I was a new teacher, and I gave an honest account of the students’ work. In Simon’s case, the grades were awfully low. He couldn’t read his own handwriting. But he was a bright student. He discussed adult subjects with nearly adult comprehension. His work in no way reflected his abilities.

So when Simon’s mother entered the room, my palms (手掌心) were sweating. I was completely unprepared for her kisses on both my cheeks. “I came to thank you,” she said, surprising me beyond speech. Because of me, Simon had become a different person. He talked of how he loved me, he had begun to make friends, and for the first time in his twelve years, he had recently spent an afternoon at a friend’s house. She wanted to tell me how grateful she was for the self-respect I had developed in her son. She kissed me again and left.

I sat, stunned, for about half an hour, wondering what had just happened. How did I make such a life changing difference to that boy without even knowing it?What I finally came to remember was one day, several months before, when some students were giving reports in the front of the class, Jeanne spoke quietly, and to encourage her to raise her voice, I had said, “Speak up. Simon’s the expert on this. He is the only one you have to convince, and he can’t hear you in the back of the room.” That was it. From that day on, Simon had sat up straighter, paid more attention, smiled more, and became happy. And it was all because he happened to be the last kid in the last row. The boy who most needed praise was the one who took the last seat that day.

It taught me the most valuable lesson over the years of my teaching career, and I’m thankful that it came early and positively. A small kindness can indeed make a difference.

【1】We can infer that when Simon’s mother entered the room, the writer felt ______.

    A. satisfied B. nervous  C. happy D. surprised

2The following words can be used to describe Simon before he met the writer except ______.

    A. unconfident  B. lonely  C. outgoing D. clever

3What the teacher said in paragraph 3 is intended to ______.

    A. encourage Jeanne to speak louder

    B. encourage Simon to work hard

    C. ask Jeanne to convince Simon

    D. tell the students that Simon was expert on that

4The purpose of the passage is to ______.

    A. tell the story of Simon

    B. tell teachers how to be kind to students

    C. advise the readers to be kind to others

    D. share a valuable lesson with readers

  • 29、As I went down the wooden snowy steps, I held the rough fence with one hand, held my crying daughter Kelly with the other and made my way into the yard. I knew everything would be okay if I located my mother.

Instead of a smile, she greeted me with concern. I knew she had read my face as I’d approached. “What’s wrong?” she asked.

I held the baby out. “I can’t take care of this baby,” I said simply. My mother didn’t take her from my arms as I expected. She smiled slightly, and then replied firmly, “You have to take care of that baby.” This was not the reply I wanted. Couldn’t she hear the baby crying? I wanted her to fix this problem. Instead, she took off her gloves and asked me in for some coffee.

Mom held Kelly while I held the coffee cup. At that moment the baby finally stopped crying. I glanced over at Kelly, content in my mother’s arms. Her tiny blue eyes were fixed on me, as if to ask, “What’s the problem here, Mama?” Her sweet, familiar breath eased the stress in the air. I looked at my mother, feeling foolish but relieved. She stood and placed an arm around my shoulders. “By the time you came along, things were quite the opposite for me. But with your elder brother, you can bet that I often felt helpless.”

The baby showed no signs of our afternoon struggle, while my own hair remained damp and messy from sweat and worry. “Crying is the only way babies have to communicate. Try to listen to her cries and hear them as language. She’s not crying to annoy you; she’s trying to send a message with the only voice she has.”

Once again, her gentle guidance had supported me through a storm and back into clear skies.

【1】Why did the author visit her mother in the rough weather?

A.She was concerned about her mother’s safety.

B.She was helpless and needed her mother’s help.

C.She wanted to learn to care for babies from her mother.

D.She intended to borrow some money from her mother.

【2】How did the author’s mother probably feel when bringing her up?

    A.Inexperienced but patient.

    B.Considerate but impatient.

    C.Experienced and confident.

    D.Thoughtless and unconcerned.

【3】What did the author’s mother want to express in paragraph 5?

A.Taking care of babies was difficult.

    B.Babies enjoyed annoying their parents.

C.The author should let her baby cry more.

D.Parents should understand and accept babies’ crying.

【4】What can we infer about the author’s mother?

A.She usually goes shopping with the author.

B.She lives a lonely life without her children.

C.She often gives advice to the author in trouble.

D.She likes to raise small children for young mothers.
