26、“Long time no see.” is a very interesting sentence. When I first read this sentence from an American friend’s e-mail, I laughed. I thought it was a perfect example of Chinglish.
Obviously, it is a word-by-word translation of the Chinese greeting with wrong English grammar and structure! Later on, my friend told me that it is a standard American greeting. I was too surprised to believe her. Her words were unbelievable at all. So I did research on Google.com. Though it is sort of informal, it is part of the language that Americans use daily.
Nobody knows the origin of this Chinglish sentence. Some people believe that it came from Charlie Chan’s movies. In the 1930s, Hollywood movie makers successfully created a worldwide famous Chinese detective (侦探) named “Charlie Chan” on wide screens. Detective Chan liked to teach Americans some Chinese wisdom by quoting Confucius. “Long time no see.” was his symbol. Soon after Charlie Chan, “Long time no see.” became a popular expression in America thanks to the popularity of these movies.
Some scholars compare America to a huge melting pot. All kinds of cultures are mixed in the pot together, and they change the colour and taste of each other. Language is usually the first thing to be influenced in the mixed pot.
You can have some examples from other countries, such as pizza from Italian, sushi from Japanese, and déjà vu from French etc. There is a long list! Since Americans admire Chinese culture more and more nowadays, I believe more Chinese words will become American English in the future. In this way, the American’s melting pot keeps adding richness and flavour.

B.The melting pot is the symbol of American culture.

27、In 2020, American National Youth Tobacco Survey found that more than 3.6 millon youth had used e-cigarettes. That means e-cigarette use has gone beyond traditional cigarette use in young people.
There are some reasons for that. Many young people are curious to try out some new flavors (味道) in e-cigarettes, like chocolate, lemon and strawberry. In fact, research has shown that the interesting flavors are what lead kids to experiment with e-cigarettes in the first place. Besides, when seeing some friends using them, the youth would probably have a try, too, believing that e-cigarettes are much cooler than traditional cigarettes. Last, they falsely believe me-cigarettes are harmless to their health since no smelly gases are produced in the process.
Many young users do not realize e-cigarettes have dangerously high levels of nicotine (尼古丁), sometimes as much as that of an entire pack of cigarettes, so that they are pretty harmful to their health and highly addictive. There has been a rise of stories in the media about kids who use e-cigarettes developing serious breathing problems. And nicotine may harm their developing brain, as brain development continues through about age 25. Also, nicotine can affect their ability to concentrate, learn and exercise.
Another huge risk is the fact that e-cigarettes blow up, thus causing serious injuries. According to a 2019 study from the U.S. Fire Department, e-cigarettes caused serious injuries to users including breaking their jaws (下巴 ) or knocking out their teeth. Meanwhile, another study found that injuries from e-cigarette use resulted in nearly 2,000 emergency room visits between 2018and 2020.
In the U.S, it is now illegal for anyone under the age of 21 to buy e-cigarettes. What's more, the government now requires e-cigarettes to contain a warning about the addictiveness of nicotine.

Several former teachers were on hand to tell stories about the old days. Ms. Mabel Yates, the English teacher for over fifty years, was wheeled to the Park.
Some eyes rolled and there were a few low groans(叹息声) when Ms. Yates was about to speak. Many started looking at their watches and coming up with excuses to be anywhere instead of preparing to listen to a lecture from an old woman who had few kind words for her students and made them work harder than all the other teachers combined.
Then Ms. Yates started to speak: “I can’t tell you how pleased I am to be here. I haven’t seen many of you since your graduation, but I have followed your careers and enjoyed your victories as well as crying for your tragedies. I have a large collection of newspaper photographs of my students. Although I haven’t appeared in person, I have attended your college graduations, weddings and even the births of your children, in my imagination.”
Ms. Yates paused and started crying a bit. Then she continued: “It was my belief that if I pushed you as hard as I could, some of you would succeed to please me and others would succeed to annoy me. Regardless of our motives, I can see that you have all been successful in your chosen path.”
“There is no greater comfort for an educator than to see the end result of his or her years of work. You have all been a great source of pleasure and pride for me and I want you to know I love you all from the bottom of my heart.”
There was a silence over the crowd for a few seconds and then someone started clapping. The clapping turned into cheering, then into a deafening roar(呼喊). 29、A man rides a brand-new, orange bicycle to his office door. He parks the bicycle by the side of the building and disappears inside. A woman approaches and waves her smartphone over a QR code (二维码) on the bike. The lock opens and she rides off. These days, China’s once bicycle-jammed streets are choked with cars, but people in cities are getting back on two wheels, attracted by the ease of using shared “dockless” (无桩的) bikes.
For years, bike-sharing programs have been common in big cities around the world, but they require customers to return the bicycles to docking stations. In China, a more user-friendly approach is spreading rapidly. It involves bikes that can be paid for by using a smartphone and left anywhere. A ride typically costs one yuan on a fashionably-designed bike in an eye-catching color.
The first such service was started in June 2015 by a company called ofo. The company now has around 2.5 million yellow-framed bikes in more than 50 cities in China. Its main competitor, Mobike, which started up only a year ago, says it has several million of its orange-wheeled bikes spread across similar areas. Apart from the two, several other companies are piling in the business, including bluegogo, CooLQI, Hellobike and so on.
The dockless system is likely to be abused. Some riders hide the bikes near their homes to prevent others from using them. Another trick involves photographing a bike’s QR code and then scratching it off to stop others from scanning it. With the stored photo, the rider can then keep the machine for his own use. However, customers caught misbehaving can have points deducted (扣减) from their accounts, making it more expensive for them to rent the bikes.
A bigger problem for the new firms is persuading people to use bikes instead of cars. Thirty years ago, 63% of Beijingers rode to work. Now only 12% do. Many people think that cycling is only for the poor. Cycling is also dangerous, since many bike lanes (自行车道) have been removed to make room for cars and about 40% of road accidents involve bicycles.
Some city authorities accuse the bike-sharing firms of causing traffic jams, but most people like the services.

【3】How will the riders with bad behavior be punished?
A.By being fined on the exact spot.
B.By not being allowed to use any dockless bikes.
C.By paying higher rents for future use of the shared bikes.
D.By having their points fully reduced from their banking accounts.
【4】What’s the major problem for bike-sharing firms?
A.The dockless bikes have been seriously damaged.
B.There are not enough bike lanes available to riders.
C.Local authorities blame traffic jams on dockless bikes.
D.It’s difficult to promote the use of bikes in place of cars.
