二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   My family loves the Golden Rule. But in all our years of treating others as we want to be treated, I have learned that this famous motto is a failure. That’s especially true in my family’s choice of food.

My family of two parents and three daughters eats together only on birthdays, and even then, only at dinner. The other 1,090 meals of the year are eaten around different schedules. Even though our lives are totally a mess, for the five important meals each year, we eat as a family.

When we were younger, my mother would prepare a delicious feast with the birthday girl (or birthday father) who was the guest of honor that day. Later, as my sisters and I were allowed to use the cookers, we made birthday meals for our parents.

My parents prepare Indian food for our birthdays. They cook special party foods: tiki, samosa and sweets that would make any dentist worried. Being from northern India, they also make southern food that we rarely taste: bland idly, spicy samber and much more. This is the food they love best, and to show love, they make for us what they enjoy. Yet this is not the food my sisters and I would choose.

For our parents’ birthdays, my sisters and I cook European foods: Finnish summer soup, German apple cake, Norwegian flat-bread and so on.

Although my parents appreciate the food, we know this is not the food that they care for. My mother tries to cover her criticisms (批评) in praise, saying, “The soup is deliciousbut it has very little flavor (味道).” My father refuses to eat pie, wondering what makes Europeans eat cooked fruit and raw vegetables.

Despite different desires and tastes, we put the least bitter flavor into everything we cook according to the rule of treating others as we want to be treated.

1When does the family eat together?

A.When they spend holidays. B.When they celebrate festivals.

C.When they celebrate everyone’s birthdays. D.When they celebrate the parents’ birthdays.

2What would the author’s parents make for the kids’ birthdays?

    A.Something the Europeans would eat.

B.Something the parents would like to eat.

C.Something the kids really wanted to enjoy.

D.Something that is only eaten in northern India.

3What would the mother do after eating what the kids made?

A.She would refuse to eat what was not delicious.

B.She would tell her daughters what she loved directly.

C.She would bring forward her opinions in a polite way.

D.She would suggest raw vegetables instead of cooked fruit.

4What does the author want to tell us in the text?

A.Being good at cooking is necessary.

B.Everyone has his own desire and taste.

C.Kids should be grateful to their parents.

D.Treat others according to their true preference.

  • 27、   The clockwork radio is the only radio that doesn’t need electricity. It works by turning the handle (手柄)for a minute. Nowadays, thousands of these radios are made every day. They are bought by people in some places, where there isn’t any electricity. The clockwork radio was invented in 1991 by Trevor Bayliss, a British inventor. He had the idea within half an hour while he was listening to some news in the radio about Africa: some Africans were dying of AIDS and there was no easy way to send them information about the disease. The first one he made ran for 14 minutes before needing to turn the handle again, but one year later, it improved. However, people didn’t know it until it appeared on a television programme called Tomorrow’s World.

At the beginning, no one would help Trevor develop his idea for a new kind of radio. Finally, in 1994his invention was shown on the TV programme, and afterwards, a South African businessman watched it and decided to help him. The first Freeplay radios were built in South Africa in 1995. Since then, the radios have been a great success. And then Trevor has become famous. He has been given many awards(奖品),including one from Nelson Mandela.

Mr. Bayliss, whose latest project is a wind-up walking stick, created a website offering inventors suggestions on patenting (专利)and marketing. After that, he also invented electric shoes, which produce electricity as you walk. And the self-weighing suitcase is also his invention- you pick it up and the handle tells you how much it weighs. That’s very useful when you go to the airport.

1When did the radio appear on Tomorrow’s World?

    A.In 1991. B.In 1992. C.In 1994. D.In 1995.

2Which of the following is the right order of the events for Mr. Bayliss?

    c. His clockwork radio was welcomed by people.     d. He improved his radio.

    A.acdb. B.bcda. C.cadb. D.dbca.

3Why did Mr. Bayliss create his website?

A.To introduce his ideas about inventions. B.To help inventors with their patents.

C.To sell the clockwork radios. D.To show his awards on it

4What is the text mainly talking about?

A.The invention of the clockwork radio. B.The good use of the clockwork radio.

C.Mr. Bayliss’ patent protection. D.Mr. Bayliss’ inventive ideas.
