  • 28、In 2019, Bei Bei’s leaving from the Smithsonian’s National Zoo, to join the giant panda breeding (繁育) program in China’s Wolong Nature Reserve, left a big blank for fans. What made the loss of the cute Panda even more upset was the belief that his mother, Mei Xiang, was too old to have more cubs (幼崽). However, on August 21, 2020, the 22-year-old proved experts wrong by giving birth to a healthy cub.

“Giant pandas are an international symbol of endangered wildlife, and with the birth of this precious cub we are excited to offer the world a much-needed moment of joy,” said Steve Monfort, director of the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute. “Because Mei Xiang is of advanced pregnant (怀孕的) age, we knew the chances of her having a cub were little. However, we wanted to give her one more opportunity to do something to her species’ survival. I am very proud of our animal care and science teams, whose expert knowledge and skills in giant panda behavior were so important to this conservation success.”

The zookeepers shared the precious moment of birth on the live panda camera and said Mei Xiang took to her new cub immediately and has since been seen lovingly caring for it. Nutrition (营养) is significant for the survival of the precious cub. New born pandas, which weigh just three to five pounds at birth, are unable to see or move for about two months. They, therefore, can only rely on the mother’s care, warmth, milk and protection. However, so far, the cub, which can be heard squawking (吱吱的叫声) on the live camera, appears to be perfectly healthy.

The newborn’s parents, Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, are part of the Zoo’s cooperative breeding agreement with the China Wildlife Conservation Association. Similar to its brothers and sisters — Tian Shan, Bao Bao, and Bei Bei — the new baby panda will be sent to China to try to increase the numbers of the endangered species.

【1】What made a big difference to the birth of the cub according to Steve Monfort?

    A.Mei Xiang’s advanced age.

    B.Mei Xiang’s good physical health.

C.The expert efforts of the science team.

    D.Careful management of the zookeepers.

【2】What can we learn from the third paragraph?

A.Mei Xiang’s new cub needs more nutrition.

B.New born pandas can’t take care of themselves.

C.The new born cub is squawking because it is in poor health.

D.The zookeepers are teaching Mei Xiang how to care for babies.

【3】Why will the new born panda be sent to China?

A.To help the breeding of its species.

B.To reunite with his mother and father.

C.To satisfy fan’s desire in Wolong Nature Reserve.

D.To make up for the blank for panda fans.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

A.Experts’ Wrong Belief on Panda Breeding

    B.China Wildlife Conservation Association

C.A Panda’s Unforgettable Journey to China

D.An Older Panda Breeding Her Cubs Successfully

  • 29、There are more than 250 Indigenous (本土的) languages in Australia but, according to an AIATSIS 2018-19 survey, only 123 Aboriginal (澳大利亚土著的) and Torres Strait Islander languages are still in use. Of those, only about 12 are strong and being taught to children.

“It’s very worrying,” says Professor Jakelin Troy, a Ngarigu woman and linguist (语言学家) at the University of Sydney. “As a Ngarigu person in Australia, my own language is not spoken by my community,” she says. “There are a few people who know a little bit about the language.”

But that is beginning to change, she adds, and her community is starting to use their language again. “Our language is not a language that has no future,” she says. “But the future is in our hands.”

“I can now sing a song in my language and I can introduce myself in my language. Last year, I couldn’t do that. It doesn’t take very long to get a language going again, but people need to be supported to do that.”

And Professor Troy is doing what she can to help this along. She designed an Aboriginal language K-10 syllabus (教学大纲) for all school ages. She was also a lead writer on the Australian curriculum for language, focusing on how to teach Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages.

There are now thousands of students studying an Aboriginal language at school in Australia. “Young Australians love being Australian and engaging with who and what we, as the Indigenous people of Australia are. They want to be part of it,” she says.

Like Professor Troy, Professor Felicity Meakins, a linguist at the University of Queensland, wants Indigenous languages to be taught in schools. But she’d also like them to be spoken in different domains (领域), including artistic practices. She points to examples such as Kylie and Clint Bracknell, Noongar people from Western Australia, who have been translating films and versions of Macbeth into the Noongar language.

“I’d love to see language really filling all of the domains where it belongs,” she says.

【1】What problem does the survey find about Indigenous languages?

    A.They are disappearing.

    B.They are refused by children.

C.They stop being taught at many schools.

D.They receive little attention from linguists.

【2】How does Troy sound when mentioning her community’s reusing their own language?

    A.Worried.

    B.Doubtful.

    C.Hopeful.

    D.Humorous.

【3】How have Troy’s efforts turned out?

    A.They have experienced many challenges.

B.They have won wide praise from local people.

C.They need support from Indigenous language speakers.

D.They help Aboriginal languages find their places in schools.

【4】What does Meakins expect of Indigenous languages?

A.They will be studied as college majors.

B.They will be taught to children at home.

C.They will be recognized as official languages.

D.They will be spoken in fields other than school education.

When I was laid off (失业)in 2015, I told people about it the way any young people would: by tweeting it. My hope was that someone in my social network would point me to potential opportunities.

Think of the parents you see in the drop-off one(下客区)at school. Your favorite waiter. The other dog owners at the park. Sociologists(杜会学家) call these relationships “weak ties.” Not only can these connections affect our job prospects(前景) but they can also have a positive impact on our 2.

Maintaining the network of acquaintances can help you feel more 3. The desire to belong and form social attachments is a basic human need, alongside food, sleep and safety But once we hit 25, the number of friends we have 4 and becomes smaller over time, according to a 2016 study. 五、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 32、阅读下面材料,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

They say that “a picture is worth a thousand words”, but the briefest look at books and the movies based on them would have anyone questioning this common saying. All too often, great words end up being turned into cinematic “turkeys”.

Good movies need good stories. If so, why has one of the earliest and greatest works in Western storytelling, Homer’s The Odysey, never had an equally great movie based on it? Movies need strong characters. So why have the movies based on The Great Gatsby never been praised as “great”? Movies of course need impressive images, so why has Alice in Wonderland only resulted in movies best described as “interesting”?

One of the key reasons behind this is that while a book usually takes a few days to read, a movie typically lasts under two hours. This means that great books can lose plot details and characters when they move to the big screen. This is something that even the highly successful Harry Potter movies can’t escape from, with fans of the books disappointed not to see some of their favourite characters in the movie version.

Movies also disappoint us when things don’t look the way we imagined them in the books. Take, for example, the epic movie Troy, which is in part based on Homer’s The Iliad and was met with mixed reviews from the audience. The most questionable issue was the actress chosen to play the part of Helen. Many people thought she didn’t live up to Helen’s title of “the most beautiful” woman in the world, influencing opinions of the movie to some extent.

There are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people’s eyes. Furthermore, books and movies are two different forms of media and therefore have different rules. With this in mind, perhaps we should judge a movie in its own right, and not against its original source. Interestingly, audiences have in recent years turned to television series such as Sherlock or Mad Men, which can have many characters and gradual plot development. Perhaps, one day, readers of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s most admired work will find themselves glued to their screens by episodes of The Great Gatsby.
