二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、When I entered high school, there were many things that worried me. I felt homesick and couldn't study well, which resulted in low marks as well as self-esteem (自尊心). I didn't know what to do, so I just followed others.

One day, all students were called to the school playground. We were asked to meet an education expert for personality development. All of us were waiting for him when we saw a thin man and the headmaster. He looked confident, with a smile on his face. He introduced himself to us and started his work. Most of it was interactive (互动的)lessons with students. Then he said," Now I need 20 students. Who want to take a talent(才能)test and consider them to be the best in the world ?" We all wanted to attend, so all of us raised our hands in unison.

He chose 20 among us and gave them a question paper and said, "There are 10 questions on the paper, and the quickest person to answer it will be the winner! When finishing it, write your name on the paper and give it to me." When he said "Start", all the students wrote quickly. Between their funny actions and our loud laughter, somehow the competition was over. At last, he told us the name of the winner--NOBODY. We were all surprised, and silence fell upon us. He said between the first introduction and the first question, there was another line which said ,"Read all the questions carefully, and answer ONLY THE 10TH QUESTION."

Needless to say (不用说) all the students were awkward.

After a few minutes, he spoke at last and told us to keep careful and have creativity in life. He got all our attention; he is none other than Dr Tyler Ralph, one of the most famous experts in American education.

【1】What does the underlined part "in unison" in Paragraph 2 mean ?

    A.Following others slowly.

    B.Doing something doubtfully.

    C.Having no purpose or thought.

D.Doing something at the same time.

【2】Why was there no winner among those 20 students ?

    A.Because the questions were difficult.

B.Because none of them was a talent.

C.Because they were all too careless

D.Because the test time was too short.

【3】What does Dr Tyler Ralph think the student should be________.

    A.energetic and thoughtful

    B.careful and creative

    C.confident and active

    D.brave and honest

  • 28、A company Watergen has created a machine that can produce clean and drinkable water out of air. The device, called GENNY, is small enough to be used in a home or office but can produce up to 30 liters of water a day.

GENNY takes air in and passes through a filter (过滤器) to remove dust and dirt. The filter is powerful enough to work with high air pollution. The air is directed through GENIUS, a heating and cooling process which causes water in the air to condense(凝结). This water is then passed through several more filters and minerals are added to improve the flavor of the water. Finally, the water is stored in a tank to keep it fresh. Therefore, the water produced by GENNY is often of a higher quality than water running through filtration systems attached to the city’s water lines.

The technology of GENIUS is much better than other technologies that produce water from air. It produces four to five times more water per kilowatt-hour. Watergen has other products that use this same technology on a larger scale, the largest of which can produce up to 5,000 liters of water per day.

As an added bonus, during the water production process, GENNY can send out clean air which is healthier for people to breathe.

At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, GENNY was named the Energy Efficient Product of the Year. The award series recognize the world’s top high-tech home products.

Last year, Watergen’s large-scale products were donated to authorities in Brazil, Vietnam and India for people to use. They also assisted rescue and recovery efforts during the 2018 California wildfires and provided clean and safe water for the residents of Texas and Florida due to the result of the destruction caused by hurricanes Harvey and Irma.

【1】What do we know about GENNY?

A.The water is stored in GENIUS.

B.GENNY can be used to clean rivers.

C.GENIUS is a heating and cooling process.

D.The water produced by GENNY is more nutritious.

【2】What can GENNY do besides producing clean and drinkable water out of air?

    A.It can absorb dirty air.

B.It can give off clean air.

C.It can blow off polluted air.

D.It can identify the quality of air.

【3】In what way is the technology of GENIUS better than other technologies?

A.It can make water taste much better.

B.It can keep water fresh for a longer time.

C.It can kill harmful bacteria more efficiently.

D.It can produce much more water per kilowatt-hour.

【4】What is the main idea of the last paragraph?

A.The practical use of Watergen’s products.

    B.The characteristics of Watergen’s products.

    C.The disadvantages of Watergen’s products.

D.The market response to Watergen’s products.

Mary has always been by my side since my earliest age I could remember. The time I spent with her on our way to school was always the happiest memory for me. However, after the hospital told her that she had a serious cancer, we could no longer go to school together. I started the second semester of tenth grade on my own. Day by day, she became weaker and I felt like she was going away leaving me alone.

One day, when I woke up to go to school, Mary didn't. She had passed away in her sleep during the night. After she was laid to rest, I went back to school, but I didn't care much to be there at all. Then there came my darkest days when I felt like doing nothing and talking to nobody but floating(漂浮)in the ocean of sadness of losing her.

Since it was a new semester, my teacher didn't know me very well. My English teacher, Miss Jones, however, noticed that something was unusual. One day she asked me to meet her after class. “You always seem lost,” she said. "Your mind is always someplace else during class.”

I told her the reason I came to school every day. It was because I could be with Mary. Now she wasn't there. I didn't really feel I need to come anymore. Then she said, "well, could you please just do me a favor. I want you to meet me in my office today during the free period." So I met her, just to talk. Afterwards, she said, "Meet me tomorrow, the same time." And I did so the next day. She had me meet her during her after-class time, I helped her mark papers, check homework and we talked.

    Paragraph 1:

This went on without missing a single day, which gradually took brightness to my life.

    Paragraph 2:

It took me years before I realized what Miss Jones had done.
