27、Archaeologists in Italy are learning more and more about the everyday life of the people who lived in Pompeii nearly 2,000 years ago. Pompeii is an ancient city world-known for being suddenly buried in the year 79 by the nearby volcano, with over 1,100 people killed almost instantly by the extreme heat.
People began unearthing Pompeii in the mid-1700s. Over the years, scientists have discovered more and more about the life of these people who were sadly frozen in time. Archaeologists have discovered theatres, swimming pools, gyms, hospitals, and many different kinds of stores. In 2019, Italian archaeologists announced they were working to unearth a snack bar, or a thermopolium. As the bar was in such a great shape, they were determined to unearth the whole area.
A thermopolium has a long, low counter with many clay pots built into it to hold the food and drinks. What was special about this one was that even the pictures on counter walls were in almost perfect condition, almost exactly the way people would have seen them years ago. Some of the paintings on the wall show ducks and roosters — examples of food served at the snack bar.
The archaeologists discovered in the counter many large clay jars holding food and drinks, and two jars holding fish and pork. They also found a mixture of snails, fish, and sheep, which they believe may have been some sort of soup. Additionally, they found the skeleton (骨架) of a small dog, as well as the bones of at least two people, one of whom was about fifty, and appeared to have been asleep when killed by the volcano.
The archaeologists say they're really only just beginning to understand all that they can learn from this snack bar. Because the site was so complete, they expect it to demonstrate many more of the hidden secrets of Pompeii.
【1】What can be found in the thermopolium?
A.Silver pots.
B.Swimming pools.
C.Wall paintings.
D.Teenage bones.
【2】What might the underline word “demonstrate” in paragraph 5 means?
A.Prove.
B.Preserve.
C.Show.
D.Observe.
【3】Which might be the best title of the text?
A.A Snack Bar Found in Pompeii
B.Pompeii Came Back to Life
C.Archeologists Made Every Effort

28、 Some caterpillars’ warning signals (信号) may have evolved (进化) from walking. A team, writing in the journal Nature Communications, reported that the hair-like structures the living things use to make sounds evolved from legs.
The team studied caterpillars which use these structures to communicate their ownership of leaves. This means the caterpillars are able to “tell” strangers to go away without risking injury in fighting. “These are really interesting caterpillars,” said Dr. Jayne Yack from Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada, who led the research. “They make signals using hair-like structures which are on their back ends.”
The caterpillars drag these structures across the leaf to make scraping (刺耳的) sounds when strangers enter the area of their leaves. “When they make this signal, the strangers leave,” explained Dr. Yack. “It’s like saying ‘I’m here, get out of here — I already own this leaf’.”
The scientists looked at other species (物种) within the same group of caterpillars and created their “family tree”. They used chemical markers (标记物) to work out the relationship between the animals, showing which in the group were the more ancient species and which species evolved more recently. “Those more ancient species actually don’t have these sound-producing structures. They have legs that they use to walk towards strangers,” said Dr. Yack. These more ancient species, she explained, walk towards strangers and try to fight against them. “They can kill each other in the fighting,” Dr. Yack added. She said that the evolution of the scraping show had allowed the caterpillars to solve their fighting without injury. “So our idea is that these signals actually avoid harm to both sides — they solve fighting in a more ‘friendly’ way.”
The study also provides a map of an evolutionary process that many other biologists are researching.
【1】What can we learn about caterpillars’ warning structures from the text?

B.They are found in caterpillars’ heads.
C.They are used to fight against strangers.
D.They may have evolved from caterpillars’ legs.

【3】What does the underlined word “They” in the fifth paragraph refer to?

A.How caterpillars evolved.
B.How caterpillars warn strangers.
C.Communication between caterpillars.

29、It was a hot summer day, and I became thirsty. The sun was right above our heads, and my thirst became unbearable. My mouth was completely dry. We could see a village at the bottom of the mountain — four hours away, according to the smuggler. After a few minutes, however, we got to a small lake. The water was yellow and covered with algae, but the smuggler drank it and brought me a cup of water to drink. As I looked into the cup, I was reminded of the solution that we prepared in biology class in order to grow bacteria. This was the main source of water for the village. Who knows what microorganisms were swimming in that lake.
“I wouldn’t drink it if I were you,” my aunt said. But I closed my eyes and drank the whole cup at once. I would worry about the consequences later.
We reached the village just before sunset. After eating dinner and resting for several hours, we started to travel again. The night journey was magnificent. The sky was clear, the moon was full, and millions of stars seemed to be twinkling at the night travelers. We could hear the bells of another car a van coming from the opposite direction, getting louder and louder as it got close. The ding-a-ling of that caravan added a rhythm to the lonely desert.
Now we were on the land of the Freedom Fighters. We knew if they recognized the smuggler, they would kill all of us as spies. The Freedom Fighters and the Millitia are enemies to each other, and the Freedom Fighters did not trust anyone who was traveling with an agent.
At dawn we reached a small teahouse, where we had some tea and bread. We walked on, and soon a signpost got my attention. As I got closer, I was able to read the words: Welcome to Pakistan I started to cry, walking backwards to get one last glimpse of my beloved country.
