26、 Fairies today are the material of, children's stories, little magical people with wings, often shining with light. Typically pretty and female, like Tinkerbell in Peter Pan, they usually use their magic to do small things and are mostly friendly to humans.
One explanation suggests the origin of fairies is a memory of real people. So, for example when tribes with metal weapons invaded land where people only used stone weapons some of the people escaped and hid in forests and caves. Further support for this idea is that fairies were thought to be afraid of iron and could not touch it. Living outside of society, the hiding people probably stole food and attacked villages. This might explain why fairies were often described as playing tricks on humans. Hundreds of years ago, people actually believed that fairies stole new babies and replaced them with a "changeling"-a fairy baby-or that they took new mothers and made them feed fairy babies with their milk.
While most people no longer believe in fairies, only a hundred years ago some people were very willing to think they might exist. In 1917, 16-year-old Elsie Wright took two photos of her cousin, nine-year-old Frances Griffiths, sitting with fairies. Some photography experts thought they were not real, while others weren't sure. But Arthur Conan Doyle, the writer of the Sherlock Holmes detective stories, believed they were real. He published the original pictures, and three more that the girls took for him, in a magazine called The Strand, in 1920. The girls only admitted the photos were not real years later in 1983, and that they created them using pictures of dancers that Elsie copied from a book.

28、Mary Krupa became friends with the grey squirrels during her first week at Penn State, after sporting them running around and idly(漫不经地)wondering what they would look like with tiny hats on their heads. Today, everyone at the university knows her as the “Squirrel Girl”.
Mary started bringing them food, and gradually they began to trust her. She managed to put a hat on a squirrel and take a picture. Thinking that her colleagues could do with something to lift up their spirits, she started posting similar photos on Facebook. The response was greatly positive, and before long Mary and her squirrels became an Internet hit.
Growing up in a neighborhood outside State College, Mary was always fond of birds and animals around her home, but she didn’t interact with people very much. She was later diagnosed with Asperser’s syndrome, but the squirrels changed that. “The squirrels are actually a good way to break the ice, because I’ll be sitting here patting a squirrel and other people will come over and we’ll just start like feeding the squirrels together and chatting about them,” she said. ”I am a lot more outgoing.”
And in case you’re wondering how Mary is able to get the squirrels to do what she wants for her photos, it has a lot to do with food. For example, whenever she wants them to hold or play with something, she puts peanut butter on the prop (道具), and they’ll grab it. But getting to that part took a while. In the beginning, she would throw peanuts up the trees on campus and invite the squirrels to come down and get them, but they hesitated to approach her. She had the patience to earn their trust, though.
This year, Mary is graduating with a degree in English and wildlife sciences. She wants to be a science writer and educate people on how to preserve the environment. As for her furry friends, Mary plans to stay in the area and visit them as often as she can.

29、My parents moved from Mexico to South Texas in the early 90s with the hope for a brighter future for their family of nine — my parents, four boys and three girls. My parents have always wanted the best for us and they have done everything possible to encourage us to get a university degree. Never did they think that by pushing us that direction, it also meant encouraging us to move away and be distant from each other.
Initially (起初), getting accustomed to the American culture and lifestyle was very difficult for my parents. They come from a culture where kids grow up together, go to school together and most of the time live in the same neighborhood. From our point, American family values were a bit different. Typically in the US, when you turn 18, you are expected to graduate from high school, move out, find a university, possibly find a partner, get married and start a life together. Most of these decisions take you away from home; usually you have to follow opportunity and wherever that will take you.
This is my family’s current situation. I graduated from Bethel College in Indiana in 2010, and in order to fulfill my financial responsibilities of paying off student loans, I moved to Washington State for my job with Experience Mission. Ideally my parents wanted me to come home to South Texas, but that wasn’t where my opportunity took me.
Currently, my sister Jennifer lives in Waco, Texas, about eight hours from my parents. My two younger brothers also decided to go to college at Bethel and are away from my parents. More than likely, when they graduate, they will probably not move back home to South Texas.
My parent never imagined that their dream for a better future would separate our family this way.

It was 1954 when a young traveler named Robert Beach was hitching rides (搭便车) on his way from Tampa, FL to Los Angeles, CA. His rides broke down at one chilly night in Deming,NM. Beach was 24 when he was dropped off in Deming. Beach was tired, hungry, and cold. With no money in his pocket, he wondered where he might spend the night.
Police officers approached Beach standing downtown and he begged them to take him to jail so that he could be warm. The officers of course refused his request as he had not committed a crime. Beach found a business doorway and settled in for the night. When morning came, Beach recalled an Asian man walked out of the building and asked him how he might help and then walked to hand him a bag of cookies. These were likely the best cookies Rober had ever tasted.
Sixty-seven years later, Beach contacted the Deming-Luna Chamber of Commerce (商会) and told his story about his brief stay in Deming to the new Executive Director Debbie Troyer. Beach told Troyer he phoned the chamber to say that he had never forgotten this man's kindness. After 50 years serving as a judge and entering retirement, Beach wanted to say “thanks’ to this kind man and send him a $1,000 check. Beach told Troyer that he believed the road where this bakery stood was on Deming's main street. "What might that look like back in 1954,” Troyer wondered. "I'll ask our community."
