二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、In the 1970’s, people who managed ponds had a problem with plants and snails in the water. To control the pests, the managers brought four species of carp, a type of fish, from Asia. But some of the fish escaped into rivers and other waterways. Soon, there were lots of fish. And they became troublesome invasive species. These non-native fish can bully ecosystems, quickly taking over. Growing fast and big, they ate lots of the food on which the native fish would normally depend. Bighead carp are an invasive species in the United States. Binbin Wang is using a combination of computer modeling and field experiments to study how the eggs of these and other invasive carp could be transported in the Missouri River.

Today, the descendants (后代) of those carp remain a big problem. And as the fish spawn (产卵), their eggs have been drifting (漂流) far and wide. Anticipating where something will drift can be a challenge. But finding answers may handle the crisis.

At the University of Missouri in Columbia, civil and environmental engineer Binbin Wang is working to figure out where eggs of the invasive fish are spreading in the Missouri River. If science can get ahead of the problem, there’s hope that people may figure out how to stop it. But if science is too slow to answer this question, legions of carp eggs will grow into adults that out-compete their neighbors. Stopping their spread would help reduce the overall damage they cause.

Drifting may seem somewhat random, but scientists are doing researches to make useful predictions possible. Some of these drift detectives want to know if large icebergs threaten offshore oil platforms. Others hope to track the polluted air or water-and determine where they’re coming from. The work is challenging. It also can be very rewarding. Most importantly, their findings may point toward solutions for some important environmental threats.

【1】The scientists track the drifting of carp eggs in order to ________ .

A.ensure the quality of their eggs

    B.protect the native fish

C.stop them from polluting the water

D.make it easier to transport them

【2】What does the underlined word “crisis” in paragraph 2 refer to?

    A.The carp’s spawning.

    B.The direction of eggs’ drifting.

C.The extinction of the invasive fish.

D.The spread of the invasive fish.

【3】What can we learn from the passage?

A.Where carp eggs are drifting is still a barrier to the research.

B.Researches have already found ways to stop the drifting of eggs.

C.It’s easy to predict the direction of the drifting of invasive fish eggs.

D.Cleaning the polluted water is the best solutions to environmental treats.

【4】What’s the author’s attitude towards the drift detection?

    A.Indifferent.

    B.Unclear.

    C.Positive.

    D.Doubtful.

  • 22、   Traffic lights, or traffic signals, are located on most major corners in cities and towns around the world. The red, yellow and green lights let us know when it is safe to drive through the intersection (十字路口) and when to walk across the street as well as when to stop and let other drivers, bikers and pedestrians take their turns to continue on their way.

Traffic jams were a problem even before the invention of the automobile. Horse-drawn carriages and pedestrians crowded the roads of London in the 1860s. A British railway manager, John Peake Knight, suggested adapting a railroad method for controlling traffic.

Railroads used a semaphore (信号) system with small arms extending from a pole to indicate whether a train could pass or not. In Knight’s adaptation, semaphores would signal “stop” and “go” during the day, and at night red and green lights would be used. Gas lamps would light up the sign at night. A police officer would be stationed next to the signals to operate them.

The world’s first traffic signal was installed on Dec. 9, 1868, at the intersection of Bridge Street and Great George Street in the London borough of Westminster, near the Houses of Parliament and the Westminster Bridge. It was a success and Knight predicted more would be installed.

However, only one month later, a police officer controlling the signal was badly injured when a leak in a gas main caused one of the lights to explode in his face. The project was declared a public health hazard and immediately dropped.

Following the accident, about four decades passed before traffic signals began to grow in popularity again, mainly in the United States as more automobiles hit the road. The early 1900s saw several patents being field, each with a different innovation to the basic idea.

The first electric traffic light using red and green lights was invented in 1912 by Lester Farnsworth Wire, a police officer in Salt Lake City, Utah. Wire’s traffic signal resembled a four-sided bird-house mounted on a tall pole. It was placed in the middle of an intersection and was powered by overhead trolley wires. A police officer had to manually switch the direction of the lights.

【1】What benefit do traffic lights bring to the world?

A.They let the pedestrians know how to cross the intersection.

B.They decorate most main corners in cities and towns around the world.

C.They help to solve the problem of traffic blocks.

A.tell us the success of the first traffic signal

B.show the awkwardness of the first traffic signal

C.show how careless the police officer was

    D.tell us Knight’s determination

【4】What is the main factor behind the rapid development of traffic signals?

A.The improvement of the traffic signals.

B.The emergence of large numbers of cars.

C.The accident caused by the traffic signals.

  • 24、A new computerized study analyzed more than 6, 000 songs from 1951 to 2016, finding that songs were more joyful, optimistic and positive in the 1950s in America, and angrier, more fearful and sadder with each passing decade. It is especially obvious when it comes to the changes in pop music lyrics (歌词). “In general, the results show a clear trend towards a more negative tone in pop music lyrics, with a more significant change around the early 1990s,” stated researcher Kathleen Napier at Lawrence Technological University in Michigan.

My initial reaction to the result is that music from the 1950s was more relaxing and less reflective of daily reality in America than the music of later period, especially compared with much of today’s music, which can reflect our society under unpleasant criticism, with grittier (更坚忍不拔的) topics.

Though this lyrical transition (转变) can come with a chorus of negativity, I think, music, like art, should honestly reflect the emotional mood or political climate of a certain time period, not merely romanticism and optimism of it.

“Music is what we cry to... it’s what we march to... it’s what we react to...” said singer Alicia Keys at the Grammy Awards ceremony earlier this month. “It’s our shared global language, and if you really want to say something, you say it with a song.” I thought she revealed it, so I wrote down her remarks during that show.

I don’t doubt the study’s conclusions. Yet I haven’t noticed if my musical play list through the years meets the study’s conclusions, with my favorite songs getting sadder or angrier. But I’m now paying more attention to what I’m listening to and why. If you begin doing the same thing, I’ll leave you with these lyrics from Semisonic: “Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end.”

【1】What does the new computerized study mainly focus on?

A.The trend of music themes in the past several decades.

B.The popularity of pop music in different times.

C.The topics of music lyrics in recent years.

D.The feature of pop music in the 1990s.

【2】What can we know about recent years’ music?

    A.Music sales are declining.

    B.It becomes more relaxing.

C.It’s more closely related to the reality.

D.Pop music has become more and more popular.

【3】What is the author’s attitude towards the lyrical transition?

    A.Doubtful.

    B.Supportive.

    C.Unconcerned.

    D.Disapproving.

【4】What does the last paragraph suggest?

A.We should avoid listening to sad music.

B.The existence of some new things is unreasonable.

C.The process of lyrical transition is influenced by human beings.

D.We should adapt ourselves to the changing situation with pleasure.

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

On February 4, while working on a construction site in Gratiot County, Michigan, Hansen heard terrified screams coming from nearby. He stopped his work and looked up. Standing on the back porch(门廊) of the home next door was a little boy yelling “Help!” while four fierce dogs barked madly in a circle below him.

At first, Hansen thought it was just a dog fight. Then alarm bells went off in his head. “The noises they made sounded like what dogs do when they’re killing something,” he says. His thought proved right when another young boy suddenly popped up in the middle of the dogs, and Hansen watched in horror as they sank in their teeth and threw him across the grass like a small doll.

“He was shirtless and covered in blood, and those dogs were trying to kill him.” says Hansen.

Hansen raced across the grass, jumped the fence, and landed in the neighbor’s yard. He shouted at the dogs, but they ignored him. Then he displayed the most aggression that he could manage, yelling louder until they let go just long enough for Hansen to catch eight-year-old Ethan Nokes around the stomach and bear-hug him. “I couldn’t hold him under his armpits(腋窝), which would have made it easier to run, because they were torn wide open,” says Hansen.

As Hansen dashed across the yard, the dogs bounced on him, biting at Ethan. Hansen rushed onto the steps. So did the dogs. When he reached the top, he pulled on a door; it wouldn’t open. “A dog grabbed Ethan’s foot, and I thought they were going to get him back from me,” he says.
