二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   John Perry decided it was time to go home. It had been a perfect day. He had filled his bag with all sorts of seashells, enough to study for a month. The island had been a good place to find shell but mow the sun was going down, he must leave before it got dark. He came to the sand reef that connected the island and the shore of the mainland. He stopped for a moment to enjoy the sunset on the ocean water. Then he began to walk along the sand reef toward the shore.

He hurried on. Then, suddenly he stepped into the water. Before he knew what had happened, he dropped down and down. The water was covering his head. He rose to the top of the water, struggling to get back on to the dry sand, surprised. To his horror he saw long grey sharks there in the sea, but where was the sand reef? What had happened to it?

He began to walk back toward the island. While he had searched for shells on the island, the strong ocean waves had washed a large part of the sand reef away. He did not know much about Sharks/but he was a good swimmer. He tried to remember what he had read about sharks. Did sharks find their food by smelling it? If they did, it meant they looked for food at all times, even during the night,

Most of the night he lay down and looked up at the stars thinking. He thought of the people in the village. He was their doctor, the only doctor in the village felt good to be needed. He thought of wood for a fire, wood to signal for help, but there was no wood. At last he thought of sleep. He slept until the sun rose.

The sharks were there because the fish were there. The same waves that had washed the sand reef away had somehow pushed large schools of fish into the area. He watched the sharks kill.

He looked at the sea, if he swam to shore, he would be in the water 5,6 minutes. A lot could happen during that time. A wind blew across the water. Small waves rushed across the top and stopped him from seeing the bottom. He hoped the wind would stop. Somehow, clear water seemed less dangerous.

But first, he looked all around before he took off all his clothes He kept only his belt and his small knife. He silently slipped into the water. He went deep down and looked around. He was about to rise to the top and start swimming when he saw a long grey body below him. He kicked himself up to the top and struggled to the sand.

He stood up and looked around again. How could he make the sharks move out to sea? He put the knife against his leg and cut deep into the flesh, blood running out. He caught it on his white shirt. When the shirt was red and wet, he tied some cloths around his leg to stop the flow of blood. He tied a long piece of cloth to the shirt, then he threw the shirt into the water and pulled it with a piece of cloth.

The sharks smelled the blood; they came racing toward the shirt. He was leading then away from shore. Suddenly he dropped the cloth turned toward shore and ran as fast as he could He jumped into the water and swam. He kicked and shouted as loud as he could. He touched the shore with his fingers and pulled himself up the stones.

The shark was excited by the smell of blood and the chase went after him; its great body crushed against the stones. The other sharks jumped on it The end came quickly as the sharks’ blood turned the water red. The injured shark was eaten alive as it tried to escape.

Perry slowly got to his feet. So, he said, “you did not get me.”

He looked down at the sharks still eating even though they were full of food.

1What happened to the sand reef while John Perry was searching for seashells?

A.It was destroyed by the ocean waves.

B.It was covered by the rising tide of the ocean.

C.It fell down hen sharks were running after fishes around

D.It was washed away by the ocean waves created by the sharks.

2What made him think he was important to the villagers?

    A.His seashells. B.His swimming skill.

    C.His bravery. D.His occupation.

3Why didn't he choose to escape in the night?

A.Darkness made no difference to sharks at all.

B.Darkness would increase the risk of his behavior.

C.Sharks could still see him clearly in the darkness

D.Sharks seldom attacked humans during the daytime.

4Where should the sentence "He decided to swim." be put in the passage?

    A. B. C. D.

5What do you think of John Perry?

A.Cruel and violent. B.Clever and smart.

C.Skilled but careless. D.Courageous but silly.

6What can be a suitable title for the passage?

A.A narrow escape from hungry sharks B.An unforgettable day with sharks

C.A close fight against fierce sharks D.An unexpected meeting with sharks

  • 22、   In recent years, the amount of reading materials pouring off the international presses is large. Not only do we have to handle information in the printed form but we also have to deal with it in the digital form. At the same time, it's becoming increasingly necessary for us to read for study and work. The conclusion: something needs to be done to meet this rising flood.

Speed reading is one of the techniques put forward as a possible solution to the problem. Speed reading grew from information developed by the US Air Force. Air Force technicians had noticed that while in flight, some pilots were unable to recognize planes seen at a distance. During war, this could mean the difference between life and death. So they developed a machine called a tachistoscope(速示器)to help with this disability.

The tachistoscope is simply a machine that flashes pictures for different periods of time onto a large screen. They started by flashing large pictures of friendly and enemy planes slowly and then gradually shortened the flash of time while decreasing the size of the picture seen. Surprisingly, they found that with training, the average person was able to tell tiny pictures of different planes when the pictures had been flashed on the screen for only one five- hundredth of a second.

They later decided to apply this discovery to reading. Using the same machine and process, they first flashed one large word at a time for as long as five seconds on a screen, gradually reducing the size of the word and shortening the time of the flash until they were flashing four words simultaneously on a screen for one five-hundredth of a second, and were still able to obtain recognition. Speed reading was thus born and to this day, many courses teaching it still have some contents of tachistoscopic training.

With regular tachistoscopic training, almost all readers can increase their reading speed from an average of 200 words per minute to an average of 400 words per minute. However, when they stopped the training, most of these fast-readers disappointingly returned to their previous levels within only a few weeks.

Reading fast is pointless unless you understand what you read. However, research shows reading far below your normal speed is similarly harmful, for at such slow speeds, one tends to think a lot about the individual words and misses the general meaning altogether.

1What does the first paragraph mainly talk about?

    A.The need for speed reading.

    B.The quality of reading materials.

    C.The development of digital technology.

D.The characteristics of the Information Age.

    2Why was the tachistoscope developed?

A.To help people born with reading disabilities.

B.To help pilots send information more accurately.

C.To help pilots recognize planes quickly in the sky.

D.To improve the health of pilots with physical disabilities.

3What does the underlined word “simultaneously” in paragraph 4 mean?

A.With great care. B.One after another.

C.All of a sudden. D.At the same time.

4What can we infer from the text?

A.People need constant tachistoscopic training to remain fast-readers.

B.The more slowly you read, the better understanding you can achieve.

C.Tachistoscopic training can help everyone double their reading speed.

D.Speed reading courses today are almost the same as tachistoscopic training.

  • 23、It all started when I typed a perfectly reasonable prompt (提示词)into one of several apps on the market that can create an image based on text. “Skull space laser dinosaur starship explosion, ” I wrote. The app processed for a few seconds, and returned four images, one of which was strangely accurate: a dinosaur-looking skull screamed out of an empty space, trailing fire. Text-to-image AIs identify images by looking at the text that people have used to describe those pictures online. When the app got my prompt, it studied images that random people had described as “dinosaur” or laser and soon then used what is called a diffusion model (扩散模型) to add a bunch of random chaos to those pictures. Once they were suitably completed, it “upscaled” them, removing noise and sharpening focus. Its work is so good that an artist using it recently won first place for digital images at the Colorado State Fair.

But there is the question of all the other pictures online that are being transformed into AI-generated masterpieces. As many artists have pointed out, their works are being used without payment. The image-generating algorithm (算法) creates illustrations and even movies by using data sets stocked with art stolen from artists who post their works online.

Some AI researchers argue that their algorithms aren’t stealing from artists so much as learning from them just as human artists learn from each other. But a more ethical approach would be for companies to acknowledge their debt to artists and create a model of voluntary collective licensing, much like what radio stations first did in radio’s early days. Back then, musicians created groups like BMI to collectively license their music to radio stations-then BMI would pay artists based on how often their songs were played. Perhaps artists and art institutions today could form a “collecting society” that would allow companies to license their artwork for data sets.

To create ethical AI systems, we need to acknowledge the people whose work makes those systems so magical. We can’t simply take advantage of every image online - we need humans to manage those data sets and we need to pay them to do it.

【1】What can we learn about Text-to-image Als from the first two paragraphs?

A.They are developed to process pictures.

B.They are used to describe online pictures.

C.They use a diffusion model to beautify pictures.

D.They create their works based on online pictures.

【2】One of the issues raised by the success of Text-to-image AIs is ________.

    A.the influence upon art creation

    B.the availability of online pictures

C.the neglect of the artists’ copyright

D.the prospect of artists being replaced

【3】Why did the author mention BMI in Paragraph 4?

A.To introduce the role that BMI played in AI history.

B.To present a way to regulate the use of online pictures.

C.To prove the necessity of licensing music to radio stations.

D.To demonstrate the urgency of forming a collecting society.

【4】What can we infer from the passage?

A.It is not practical to improve the image-generating algorithm.

B.The function of Text-to-image AIs shouldn’t be underestimated.

C.Human efforts should be valued in the application of Text-to-image AIs.

D.Companies should be held responsible for the illegal pictures on public websites.

  • 24、   You may want to bring honey the next time you have a cold, a study says. That's because honey has been shown to provide better cough relief than some over-the-counter drugs, Oxford University researchers said in findings published in BMJ Evidence-Based Medicine.

“Honey is more effective than usual care choices for improving upper respiratory tract infection symptoms, particularly reducing cough frequency and cough severity,” the scientists said in the findings.

Researchers said they reviewed 14 past studies about upper respiratory tract infections, also known as common colds. Symptoms can include runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat and coughing, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC).

Four of the studies examined comparisons between honey and diphenhydramine, an antihistamine that can be used to relieve coughs, according to the U. S. government. It's sold at U. S. drugstores under several brand names and is combined with other ingredientsin some cold medicines.

In their findings, Oxford scientists said honey was “significantly better than” diphenhydramine at improving cough symptoms. The results came from studies that included 385 participants, data show. But honey was “not significantly better” at cough relief when compared to another class of medicines, called dextromethorphan, according to a review of two studies with a combined 137 patients. Dextromethorphan is used to suppress coughs.

Anyone sick with a cold should talk to a druggist or doctor about the best medicines for them, according to health officials. “Over-the-counter medicines may provide temporary relief of symptoms, but they will no cure your illness,” the CDC said on its website.

The CDC includes honey on its list of possible ways to suppress coughs. Other tips for feeling better from a cold include getting enough rest, breathing in steam and using saline spray, according to the CDC.

【1】What's the author's purpose in writing this text?

A.To prove honey's effectiveness in relieving cough.

B.To inform the readers how to better prevent colds.

C.To make a comparison between honey and medicines.

D.To give a description of symptoms of common colds.

【2】What does the underlined word “diphenhydramine” in Paragraph 4 refer to?

    A.A cold symptom.

    B.A sort of sweet food.

    C.A kind of cold medicine.

    D.A brand name of medicine.

【3】What can we infer from CDC's advice?

A.Honey is a safer choice for relief of cold symptoms.

B.Breathing in steam is a better way to suppress coughs.

C.Honey doesn't work for all the patients with a cold.

D.Over-the-counter medicines are a waste of money.

【4】Where is this text most likely from?

    A.A history book.

    B.An academic magazine.

    C.A medicine textbook.

    D.A science fiction.

The spot of red was what first caught Randy Heiss’s attention on December 16, 2018. He was hiking the remote land behind his farm in a small town near the U.S.-Mexico border, and there lying on the grass was a balloon. He walked toward it with his dog, thinking he should pick it up and throw it away.

That’s when he noticed the balloon’s string was attached to a piece of paper. “Dayami,” it read on one side, in a child’s writing. Heiss flipped the paper over. On the back he saw a numbered list, all in Spanish. His Spanish wasn’t very good, but he could see it was a Christmas list!

Heiss was charmed. He suspected that a child had tried to send Santa Claus a Christmas wish list by balloon, something he used to do himself when he was a kid. Nobody had ever returned the letters Heiss had sent, but he wondered whether he could find the girl who had sent this one.

It would be difficult, but Heiss had a few clues. About 20 miles to the southwest, just across the border, was the city of Nogales, Mexico, with a population of about a quarter million. Based on the wind direction, he was almost sure that was where it came from. Heiss brought the note home to his wife, who is fluent in Spanish and helped him translate the list. They determined that Dayami, probably a girl, had asked for a doll, a dollhouse, doll clothes and art supplies.

Heiss then posted his search about finding Dayami on Facebook, attaching photos, hoping some of his friends in Nogales might know the girl’s family. A few days passed with no results; Heiss worried that time was running out before Christmas. On December 19, 2018, he decided to send a private Facebook message to Radio Xeny, an AM radio station based in Nogales. To his surprise, someone from the station called him back right away and promised him to post his search on the station’s Facebook page immediately.

The next morning, Heiss awoke to a message from Radio Xeny.
